Hayeon Kim - Rome Inquiry Project Part 1

The document outlines significant inventions by the Romans, including concrete, roads, and arches, which greatly influenced history and architecture. Roman concrete was notably stronger and more durable than modern alternatives, while their road systems facilitated communication and trade. The understanding and application of arches became a defining characteristic of Roman architecture, contributing to the construction of enduring buildings and infrastructure.

Rome - Inquiry Project

What were some of Romans’ inventions?

Inventions
Romans invented major
things that impacted the
history, such as concrete,
newpaper, aqueducts and
sanitation, roads, postal
system, surgery tools and
techniques, arches, and
hypocaust system.
Concrete
Concrete was one of the most famous
inventions that romans made. Romans
used cement with volcanic rock known
as ‘tuff’ to create it. Scientists found
out that Roman concrete was more
stronger and durable than modern
concrete, and that it actually gets
stronger over time. Also, the Romans’
recipe for the concrete was actually
water-resistant. The concrete was very
important to the Romans because they
used it to build all the buildings and the
architectures.
Roads
They built roads for several different
reasons, they built it for inland carriage
of official communications, the
movement of armies, and to trade
goods. Some were built as small local
roads to broad, some as long-distance
highways to connect cities, major towns
and military bases. These major roads
were often made with stones and
metals, and cambered for drainage.
Romans built it along accurately
surveyed courses, through hills, or were
conducted over rivers with bridgework.
Arches
Arches were also one of the major
inventions Romans made, and it is actually
pretty popular. Arches were very
important in Roman history because they
pretty much represented Romans’
buildings and architects, and it is known
as one of the defining characteristics of
Roman architecture style. They were the
first ones to properly understand the rules
of arches, which then became
foundational aspects of Western
architectures. It allowed them to make
better buildings, longer roads, and better
aqueducts. The arches were used in most
of the buildings and bridges in Roman
history.
