Bayesian Search Theory Explained

Bayesian Search Theory is a statistical approach for locating lost objects through a systematic procedure that includes formulating hypotheses, constructing probability density functions, and creating a probability density map. The search begins in areas of maximum probability and is updated with new information as it becomes available. The document suggests the potential for developing this theory into an algorithm or program for practical applications.

BAYESIAN SEARCH THEORY

A FIELD OF STATISTICS
STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE
• Formulation of reasonable hypothesis for what could have
happened
• Construct Probability Density Function for each hypothesis
for the location of the object.
• Probability of actually finding the lost object in a location
X.
• Combining these two functions to get a Probability Density
Map.
• Start the search from maximal Probability area.
• Update every now and then.
STEP 1: WHAT COULD HAVE
HAPPENED?
FORMUL ATING HYPOTHESES ABOUT
WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED.
STEP 2

For each hypothesis

construct a Probability
Density Funtion for the
location of the object.
STEP 3

Now construct a function that gives the probability for

actually finding the object in location X during the
search (provided you know it’s in X).

STEP 4
Combine these two functions to form a
Probability Density Map. In 2D it is a contour
map of probability.
A basic contour map
A LITTLE COMPLEX
CONTOUR MAP.

Have you ever seen this kind

of map?
STEP 5:

Let’s do it!!!!

The hunt starts.

STEP 6: UPDATION

During the search

process we may get
some additional clues or
the object would not be
there at some locations.

All these are updated

immediately.

What if this theory is converted into an Algorithm or a Program?
