5G NSA Protocol Stack
• Understanding the Architecture and Layered
Protocols
What is 5G NSA?
• - Non-Standalone (NSA) mode uses LTE as
anchor
• - 5G NR provides high-speed data
• - Control plane: LTE
• - User plane: LTE + NR
Protocol Stack Overview
• UE and Network Protocol Layers:
• - Layers: NAS, RRC, PDCP, RLC, MAC, PHY
• - Split across LTE (Master Node) and NR
(Secondary Node)
UE Side Protocol Stack
• LTE (Master Node):
• - NAS → RRC → PDCP → RLC → MAC → PHY
• NR (Secondary Node):
• - PDCP → RLC → MAC → PHY
• Note: PDCP may be shared for bearer splitting.
Network Side Protocol Stack
• LTE eNB:
• - Same stack as UE’s LTE
• NR gNB:
• - PDCP (optional) → RLC → MAC → PHY
• Data split occurs at PDCP layer (Split Bearer)
Bearer Types
• - MCG Bearer: Data via LTE only
• - SCG Bearer: Data via NR only
• - Split Bearer: Data split at PDCP
Key Interfaces
• Interface | Function
• --------- | --------
• X2 | LTE ↔ NR gNB
• S1 | LTE ↔ EPC
• Uu | UE ↔ eNB/gNB
Summary
• - NSA leverages existing LTE infrastructure
• - Dual connectivity via PDCP split
• - Enables quicker 5G adoption
