About this series

Lehigh Carter fears two things: women and dogs. His fears are about to become very real.

Mountain Man Lehigh Carter didn't really mean to adopt the stray dog he found injured on the highway. But his ex-fiancée, Stacy McBride, convinces him to do it, with a promise to help.

Their rekindled romance angers her father, the ambitious and powerful state Senator George McBride, and sets off a chain of events that entangle Lehigh in a life-or-death conflict with Paul van Paten, the senator's hardnosed campaign treasurer and Stacy's ex-fiance.

How can a simple man like Lehigh survive the complex world of romance, corruption, politics, and dog ownership?

The Mountain Man's Dog is a briskly told crime thriller loaded with equal parts suspense, romance, and light-hearted humor, pitting honor and loyalty against ruthless ambition and runaway greed in a town too small for anyone to get away with anything.

He's just a guy who's tired of all the corruption. The machine is tired of his meddling - and wants to take him down, once and for all. Rustic forester Lehigh Carter must prove that his fiancée, Stacy McBride, is innocent of murdering a popular Acting Sheriff. But evidence that she may have had a secret affair with the victim makes even Lehigh wonder if he should fight for her freedom against the corrupt local machine that accused her. Cooperating with the only honest cop he knows in the county, Detective "Gentleman Jim" Wadsworth, Lehigh plays a high-stakes game of legal chicken to infiltrate the conspiracy and discover the truth behind Jared Barkley's murder. Evidence stacks up against Stacy, and as Lehigh continues his own investigation, his doubts about Stacy's innocence multiply--particularly when she appears to make romantic overtures to her ex-fiance, attorney Paul van Paten, a leading member of the conspiracy against Lehigh. Can Lehigh get to the truth behind Jared Barkley's death--and if so, will he like the answers that he finds?

Lehigh Carter never wanted to be sheriff. And he sure never wanted to arrest his new father-in-law for murder. Mountain Man Lehigh Carter, drafted into serving as acting sheriff of Mt. Hood County after exposing his predecessor's corruption, is compelled to arrest his new father-in-law for the murder of Everett Downey, the most despised man in town. Still learning on the job, Lehigh continues to investigate loose ends that don't add up, but ambitious prosecutor Ray "The Reverend" Ferguson seems intent on blocking him at every turn. Soon, Lehigh suspects that those most intent on pinning the murder on George McBride have reasons far more sinister than blocking Lehigh’s agenda of reform. Can Lehigh uncover the truth behind the crime without becoming the killer’s next victim?
