Risk for deficient fluidvolumerelated todiarrhea andvomiting.Cholera is an acute,diarrheal illnesscaused by infectionof the intestine withthe bacterium
Vibriocholerae
. Theinfection is oftenmild or withoutsymptoms, butsometimes it can besevere.Approximately onein 20 infectedpersons has severediseasecharacterized byprofuse waterydiarrhea, vomiting,and leg cramps. Inthese persons, rapidloss of body fluidsleads to dehydrationand shock. Withouttreatment, death canoccur within hours.
After 8 hoursof nursinginterventions,the patientwill maintainadequatefluid volumeas evidencedby moistmucousmembranes,good skinturgor, andcapillaryrefill.
Independent:
Monitor intakeand output (I&O).Note number,character, andamount of stools.Estimateinsensible fluidlosses likediaphoresis.Measure urinespecific gravityand observe for oliguria.
Assess vitalsigns. Bloodpressure, pulseand temperature.
Observe for excessively dryskin and mucousmembranes,decreased skinturgor, slowedcapillary refill.
Weigh daily.
Maintain oralrestrictions,bedrest and avoidexertion.
Providesinformationabout overallfluid balance,renal function,and boweldisease control,as well asguidelines for fluidreplacement.
Hypotension,tachycardia,fever canindicateresponse to andor effect of fluidloss.
Indicatesexcessive fluidloss or resultantdehydration.
Indicator of overall fluid andnutritionalstatus.
Colon is placedat rest for healing and todecrease
After 8 hoursof nursinginterventions,the patient wasable tomaintainadequate fluidvolume asevidenced bymoist mucousmembranes,good skinturgor, andcapillary refill.
