MANAGEMENT
OF
ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
NURSING ASSESSMENT

• Assess patient’s and family’s knowledge of disease

• Obtain a baseline 12 lead ECG
• Identify patient’s and family’s level of anxiety
• Gather inf. About the patient’s cardiac risk factors .
• Evaluate patient’s Medical history for such conditions As heart failure, previous mi or
obstructive lung disease that may influence choice of drug therapy
• Discuss with patient current activity level
• Discuss patient’s beliefs about modifications of risk factors and willingness to change
NURSING DIAGNOSIS
• Acute pain r/t imbalance in oxygen supply and demand
• Decreased cardiac output r/t reduced preload, after load , contractility and
heart rate secondary to effect of drug therapy
• Anxiety r/t chest pain , uncertain prognosis
NURSING INTERVENTIONS

Relieving Pain
1. Position patient for comfort , Fowler’s position promote ventilation
2. Administer oxygen if appropriate
3. Report findings to health care provider
4. Take vital signs frequently
5. Identify specific activities patient may engage in that are below the level at Anginal pain occurs
6. Reinforce the imp. Of notifying nsg staff when pain is experienced
Maintaining Cardiac Output
1. Carefully monitor patient’s response to drug therapy
• Take No and heart rate in sitting and lying position
• Recheck vital Signs as indicated by onset of action of drug and at time of drug’s peak effects
2. Monitor for poor perfusion
• Decreasing bp , weak pulse, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale
3. Be alert to adverse reaction r/t abrupt discontinuing of beta adrenergic blockers and calcium channel blockers
therapy
4. Discuss the use of chemotherapeutic therapy with health care provider
Decreasing Anxiety
1. Asess patient’s sign of hypofusion, asculcate heart and lungs sound
2. Answer patient’s questions with concise explanation
3. Administer medication bro relieve patient’s anxiety as directed
4. Explain patient the imp. Of anxiety reduction to assist in control of angina
