JRUs detoNate-tor buries the opposition

By Alexx Esponga

EFORE Jose Rizal University sets foot into the combat zone, Coach Vergel Meneses makes sure that his platoon leader is not only ready to lead the pack of Heavy Bombers but also primed to explode whenever they need him.
BOOM!
Minutes later, he would leave the battlefield strewn with carnage, evidence of his massive blast, never failing his team in fighting another epic battle. He always comes in time to only do one thing detoNate. Im one of the team leaders and I know my role, said Nate. JRU is a team and we will play with unity all throughout the season. On his fourth year in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Nate Matute is far more than ready to spearhead the Heavy Bombers in snatching the championship once again and end JRUs four-decade long title drought. We prepared well, focused and made sacrifices for this. I believe in myself and in this team. I see a bright season and I feel that we can go to the Final Four and hopeful- JRUs Coach ly, the finals, he Vergel added. Meneses ly a year after he moved in to the country from the United States when he was 20 years old. He was first recruited by the DLSU Green Archers but fate had better plans for this young blood. I had to wait two years before I could play for La Salle, said Matute. Then, I was practicing at a gym in Libertad when I met the Heavy Bombers and they asked me if I wanted to try-out for their team. He only had to wait a year for residency to play for JRU and so, he grabbed the chance. It was good news for him since he was really eager to play basketball and wants to play pro-ball in the future. I like playing for my school and the team. At first, I had to adjust but now, Im having so much fun, quipped the 24-year old Matute. And when asked who was his closest buds in the team he answered, Brandon

KILLER MOVES
Even though Nates first love is basketball, he also tried other sports when he was younger. I did boxing and little martial arts back then but nothing beats basketball, he shared. Aside from his killer moves inside the court, he also has this killer smile that makes the girls go crazy and there is a bit of

sad news for those who are crushing over this Heavy Bomber sharpshooter. I have a girlfriend and her name is Rica Joy Dela Cruz, admitted the Fil-Am Matute with smiles all over his face. Nate also loves reading the Hunger Games during his spare time and isnt afraid to admit that hes the kind of guy that listens to smooth music especially Someone Like You by Adele. He also adores Japanese

cuisines and enjoys watching films like The Departed. Although he has a long way to run, Nate is optimistic about the outcomes of the decisions he made and the things he is facing in and out the court. After all, it is not winning or losing a single battle that counts but how the war ends and for Matute, he has his secret bomb weapons to throw to whoever gets in his way and a whole set of Heavy Bombers to back him up.

Schools just wanna have fun

ITS always fun to wear your school pride. The halftime uniforms of cheering squads are no exception. There are teams who opt to stay traditional in their get-ups but there are those who try to have fun every year. Here are some of them. YOUTHFUL, VIBRANT, FUN. The Adamson University is celebrating its 80th year. Their Pep Squad chose to honor it with uniforms colors that scream happy and fresh. The combination of neon blue and orange lines was very eye-catching on and off the court. We were told that the golden stars on their chests also stand for the A in AdU. The uniforms were designed by coach Joseph Mascarias. HALTER STOPPER. The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe ditched the oneshouldered cut last year for a flattering halter cut. It was embellished with a gold fabricone that they hope would not easily fade. This made the dancers glitter during their performance. The team brainstormed for this design. LOOSE AND EASY. The UP Pep Squad kept things nice and easy with a varsityinspired uniform. If one looks closely, it appears more like a basketball jersey instead of cheerleading uniform. It was a nice break from the figurehugging uniforms that cheerleaders often wear. Their alumni designed the uniform.

DLSUS SWIMMING ACE JOHANSEN AGUILAR

Excellence in and Excellence in and out of the pool out of the pool

TUDENT FIRST, ATHLETE SECOND. Those words perfectly describe the UAAP Season 74s Athlete of the Year, Johansen Benedict Aguilar of the De La Salle University Green Tankers. Much can be said about this 19-year-old phenom as he has proven once more that the UAAP is more than just basketball and that being a student-athlete in its strict definition is really possible.
sult, most of my best times are in the UAAP he , added.

Aguilar, who is a consistent Deans Lister, considers discipline, sacrifice and time management as the keys to excelling both in academics and in sports at the same time. Ever since when I was in grade school and high school, Ive really taught myself to balance my time well. I really allot time to study after training before going to sleep. I also sacrificed going to late-night parties and give up those things for a greater good which is studies and swimming.

MAKING WAVES
Aguilar didnt just become last seasons Athlete of the Year without making a huge impact in the league as some of his achievements and milestones are of historic proportions. Not only was he hailed as one of the leagues Athlete Scholars, he also took home seven individual gold medals in the UAAP wars and broke the existing Philippine record for the mens 50 meters backstroke, logging 27.52 seconds. He later improved this to 27.29 seconds in the SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia last November. All of the achievements that I got are all special to me but the Athlete of the Year is one of those awards that is really hard to get since it involves not only the athletes in swimming but all the other sports as well and its something that is hard to achieve again. For the SEA Games naman, Im really proud to represent the Philippines abroad, he said.

THE swimming ace dreams of competing in the 2016 Olympics

PHOTOS BY ROMY HOMILLADA

The 4th Year Applied Economics and Applied Corporate Management major got introduced to swimming at a very young age which served as a solid foundation in honing his skills. My mom enrolled me in a learn-toswim class when I was seven and I really enjoyed it and by the time I reached 11, I was able to qualify for my first international competition which was the Southeast Asia AgeGroup in Vietnam. His love for swimming got deeper and deeper when he reached high school where he also swam for the varsity team of the MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig and by the time he graduated, he was primed and ready for the competition in the UAAP Since high . school, we had regular competitions which helped me prepare for the UAAP and made me look forward to the experience. And as a re-

BIGGER THINGS
I think every swimmer wants to be in the Olympics. I wasnt able to make it in the upcoming one but I was able to join the Olympic trials in Singapore last month. Qualifying is very hard so I have to train more for 2016, he said. But as far as this year is concerned, he has no other goal but to help the DLSU Green Tankers repeat as champions. We really need to work together as a team and I believe I have a big role to play in order for us to win again, he added.

Cheerdance fans could not help wonder why multi-titled choreographer Ryan Silva of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT) was let go. Officially, his contract ended on March 31. However, it seems that Silva expected it to be renewed. Silva is one of the winningest cheerdance coaches in the UAAP . On his Facebook status, Silva said that even when his contract ended he continued to train with the team the whole summer without receiving any pay. He said that he had already started conceptualizing for this years UAAP Cheerdance Competition. He continued with their training even when he received a thank you letter from a party which he simply referred to as The Office. It seems that he got the official word through a phone call and that pissed off a lot

of his supporters. If they no longer needed his service thats fine but they couldve at least told him that face to face, a former SDT member who requested anonymity said. Stories of taking Silva out of the team have been hanging in the air for months. Some diehard fans were surprised with the move while others welcomed it especially after the lackluster performances of the team in the past few years. SDT announced that they have a

new coach last week. It remains to be seen whether the changes in leadership would bring in championships.

FTER its 39-year supremacy in the 85-yearold University Athletic Association of the Philippines, the University of Santo Tomas has upped the ante with its newest sporting Valhalla.
Situated on 11, 784.33 square-meters of land, the Quadricentennial Pavilion (QPav) is the new home of the UAAPs striped competitors, and is considered the most advanced school facility among Philippine universities. By far, compared to other schools and colleges of the UAAP the QPav is the most , advanced facility, said Assistant Professor Rodrigo I. Sambuang, UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics Athletics Moderator. Not only is it a sporting facility, its a multi-purpose building that can host other events, and even international conventions. Last November, the QPav hosted the 8th Quacquarelli Symonds-Asia Pacific Professional Leaders in Education (QS-Apple) conference and exhibition, an international convention of school officials about scholastic concerns. Located on the first floor of the Pavilion are training rooms for USTs champion teams of judo, taekwondo, table tennis, fencing, badminton, and a dancing hall for the Salinggawi Dance Troupe. The first floor also houses a two-level fitness gym, a gymnastics room and five lecture rooms for IPEA classes. A steel masterpiece is also located on the lobby facing Espaa Boulevard, Campeone by Thomasian artist Joe Datuin. The sculpture won in the Olympic Committee Sports and Arts contest in 2008. At the heart of the QPav , is the parquet basketball court which Sambuang said is the crowning glory of the whole pavilion. An NBAstandard hardcourt adorned with black-gold-white tiger stripes and a hand-painted tigers head in the center captures the Thomasians sporting intensity. With 5,000 seats surrounding the parquet floor, Sambuang said that the Pavilion is capable of holding

Also two coaches lounges and two locker rooms are located near the basketball court. At the third floor is an indoor track oval with a couple of drinking fountains situated on every turn. Its windows also hold posters of memorable sporting events in Thomasian history. To reinforce the QPav security, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are installed in every corner of the Pavilion. Despite its innovations and advancements, Sambuang said that the completion of the whole Pavilion will take almost a year and new facilities will be installed within a time frame. Right now its almost nearing completion with finishing touches in the electrical and paint jobs needing to be attended to, said Sambuang. The athletes are already training here and we have transferred our offices here, and maybe, if the priests would have it, a wall-climbing facility can be installed here

ATENEO VS. LA SALLE SEASON 75

THE CLASH
JULY 28 (Mall of Asia Arena) 2 p.m.-UST vs NU 4 p.m.-DLSU vs Ateneo

Early Reckoning
By Ruel S. De Vera

S it always has been, the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the De La Salle Green Archers find each other at a standoff, but this time very early in the 75th season of the UAAP With just three games un. der their belts, the two teams boast identical 2-1 winloss records and got there in similar fashion.
The four-time defending champion Blue Eagles, the prognosticators favorite to win it all again this season, demolished the Adamson Falcons, 73-57, in their first game and then dropped a heartbreaking and easily winnable game to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers by a solitary point, 71-70. Bouncing back in mighty fashion however, the Blue Eagles flattened title contender National University Bulldogs, 89-95. After their wakeup call against UST, the Ateneans must be brimming with confidence heading into their face-off with their bitter rivals. Waiting for them will be a dangerous De La Salle squad. After fending off a late University of the Philippines challenge in their opening game to emerge victorious, 73-68, the Green Archers ran rings around the University of the East Red Warriors, 67-59, to pull away as early league leaders. But a resolute Far Eastern University quintet shocked the Taft dribblers in the endgame with a defensedominated ballgame, 48-46. The Green Archers look forward to possible redemption against the Loyola squad. A lot of attention has been focused on the two teams aside from the dual predictions that both shall make the final four this year if they play up to expectations. But theres a lot going on behind the lines, especially with regards to the coaching situations on both sides. The Ateneos multiple-titled coach, Norman Black has already announced that he is leaving the team after this years reach for that rare fifth straight championship. Even as the team tries to defend its crown on the floor, a muchscrutinized search for Blacks successor is going on away from the games. What is clear is that this is the end of an era for the Blue Eagles, and what an era, with the Ateneo perched atop the UAAP basketball standings since 2008. After failing to reach the final Four last season, the Green Archers started a new era of their own, with long-time mentor Franz Pumaren exiting. In his place is bright Gelacio Gee Abanilla, charged with the mandate of making over the De La Salle squad in his image. The DLSU fans look forward to what should be a solid run under a new coach, hopefully as enduring as Pumarens run with the team. The Blue Eagles will lean on their potent starters, featuring reigning rookie of the year Kiefer Ravena, smooth swingman Nico Salva and the hulking presence of 7-foot Greg Slaughter. A nascent addition has been point guard Juami Tiongson, who has orchestrated the teams offense with poise while scoring at will andmost notablyturning the ball over only once so far this season. Defensive-minded jitterbug Tonino Gonzaga or energetic and long Oping Sumalinog fill out the starters. When this unit is clicking, with Slaughter executing the inout offense with the outside shooters, the Ateneo is hard to beat. The De La Salle offense is instead run out of the backcourt with fierce LA Revilla and this seasons designated gunslinger, star rookie Jeron Teng headlining a penetration-and-pass system. Teng has already proved he can lead the DLSU attack, and athletic big men Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal provide ceiling and those all-important offensive rebounds. Emerging as the designated stopper is Jed Manguera.

BLACK

PHOTOS BY AUGUST DELA CRUZ

ABANILLA

While the Blue Eagles have a superior starting unit, the Green Archers have a more dependable bench unit. The Blue Eagles can dominate right off the bat but when it comes time to sit Slaughter and Ravena, the Ateneo reserves have proven inconsistent. It will fall to center Justin Chua and the come-backing forward Ryan Buenafe to find buckets while the starters rest. Their recent performances promise much and may prove the key to their title defense. On the other hand, the La Sallians jump off the bench with more energy, particularly with gifted scoring guards Almond Vosotros and Jarelan Tampus hard-working Jovet Mendoza plus veterans Joshua Webb and Yutien Andrada. Even as Abanilla breaks in freshman point man Mark Tallo, the Green Archers have less of a gap heading into substitutions. Both teams are likely to throw zones at each other and challenge the other to beat them from the perimeter, something that isnt automatic with this years incarnation of the two teams. This is particularly important for the Green Archers who will need this to neutralize Slaughters defensive presence in the paint. Another element the Green Archers have to pay attention to is their free-throw shooting, which has been disappointing so far. The Blue Eagles need to focus on execution, particularly out of their two-man game, with Slaughter needing to pass out of double-teams and others making the extra pass when the defense bites. From a scheduling standpoint, the Ateneo faces an easier future, with games against UP and UE up next before an anticipated match-up with losing 2011 finalist FEU at rounds end. The Archers, on the other hand, will meet tougher competition with the upset-minded UST Tigers, AdU Falcons and the wounded NU Bulldogs coming up. In that sense, DLSU needs this win more with no easy wins left in the remainder of their schedule.

With identical records, archrivals Ateneo Blue Eagles and De La Salle Green Archers face off in a new era of the UAAP with much to play for
Looking at the long-term implications, these two squads can easily find themselves clashing again, either in the final four or maybe even the season 75 finals. One expects the two teams to be at full attention this Saturday ready, as always, to play their cross-town rivals. History is in the favor of the Blue Eagles, as the Ateneans are a combined 9-1 against the Archers in the UAAP at the Smart Araneta Coliseum since the Ateneo four-peat commenced in 2008. But the Green Archers are hungry to start their new era with a resonant win against the Blue Eagles in the very first Ateneo-La Salle classic to be played at the brand-new Mall of Asia Arena. Everyone likes to say that the wins and losses dont matter when these two storied sides meet, and thats why Ateneo-La Salle remains the most compelling draw in Philippine sports, regardless of records and seasons.

DENISE ERIKA DAVID

Warrior dancer

By Jonalyn Mae Antonio

Denises affair with cheerleading began summer of 2008. Before joining the University of the East Pep squad, David used to train with different universities such as Adamson, FEU, and La Salle. Madaling makabonding at very welcome ako ng mga kasama ko sa UE, recalled Denice. Theres is one problem, though. David always suffers from illness before a major competition. But being in the sidelines doesnt prevent David from supporting UE. She cheers her lungs out for her teammates.

ACTIVE
Born and raised in Caloocan City, Denice is oldest of three girls. She went to De La Salle Araneta University during her grade school and high school where she also played basketball and volleyball. David also excelled as member of the Drama Club, Performing Arts Group, and

even in Student Council. Very active talaga ako, gusto ko lahat salihan, said David. This talented cheerleader is very attracted to a slim, tall, and guys who can dance. She admitted that shes kikay as well as sporty kind of girl and fun to be with. Sa Pep kasi isa ako sa pinaka-makulit. She believes that there is always room for improvement so even her teammates serve as her inspiration to enhance her dancing skills. Ayokong nasasayang yung oras ko sa training. Sometimes nga kapag yung mga boys namin sa Pep nagagawa yun ganung klaseng tumbling, iniisip ko kaya ko din yan. David dreams of going to Japan. Kasi super favorite ko si Hello Kitty.

ROMY HOMILLADA

WHEN asked if becoming a dancer is a life-long dream, Denise Erika David answered without batting an eyelash, Oo, kahit noon pa man. When I was a child, I dreamed of being an ice skater. I love performing in front of many people. Kapag may mga family gatherings, palagi akongpinagsasayaw at natutuwa sila.
