Parks eyes winning culture

UAAP Season 74 Most Valuable Player. Gold medalist in the 2011 SEAG as a part of the national team. 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason MVP What more can the sen. sational Bobby Ray Parks Jr. hope to accomplish this season? To create a winning culture in our small school, he said. This might be the Parks own way of humbly saying the UAAP championship. After all, the 6foot-4 small forward has been the leader of the pack for this seasons hosts National U, a university which is experiencing a 58-year title drought and is on a quest to remove the tag of the whipping boys of the UAAP. A tenacious player on both ends of the court, Parks has been a polarizing figure for NU, an attitude which makes observers think that the 19-yearold as mayabang. But off-court, the son of PBA legend Bobby Parks is a softspoken vocal leader for the upand-coming Bulldogs, a role he has embraced. I am motivated to get the team better for the UAAP and give our best in every game, he said. Averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.2 steals in the preseason tourney, which saw him crowned as the MVP Parks has made NU a title, contender for the upcoming UAAP season. I know that I can score, but were playing here as a team. A religious man in his own right, the boy who came from Memphis to Manila has depicted his religiosity in his tattoos. He draws his inspiration in every game from his dad, who taught him how to handle and shoot the ball at the tender age of four, and his girlfriend, who passed away last January. Ray-Ray, as his close friends calls him, has often got a lot of comparisons to NBA players with his monster plays on the court, and has not yet ruled out the possibility of being the first Filipino to play in the NBA. Its still a dream, Parks said. Its time for NU to change its perspective. Were a new team, Parks said. Its a chance for us to motivate each other and to play for school pride. Its a challenge to face the big schools, but were accepting that challenge. Randolph B. Leongson

Mbe, who was named Filoils Best Defensive Player, sees the improvement brought by the discipline inculcated by coach Altamirano to the team. The 20year-old center has also adjusted well in the country, even saying, I feel like I am a Filipino! Another revelation for the Bulldogs is the guard combo of playmaker Gelo Alolino and shooting guard Mark de Guzman. Alolino paced the Bulldogs with his crisp passes while de Guzman, a transferee from the College of St. Benilde, torched foes with his sweet touch from rainbow country that helped NU in an undefeated 11-game run in the Filoil tourney. Ateneo leads the pack but others are not far behind

HE 75th season of the UAAP mens basketball tournament is upon us and for those saving up for tickets to the world-class Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena, where a lot of the games will be held, heres a look at the eight teams that will fight tooth and nail for the centerpiece trophy, and their unofficial rankings based on a straw vote by INQUIRER LIBREs panel of experts.
Projected rankings in brackets. Last seasons standings and finish in parentheses. [1] Ateneo Blue Eagles (13-1, Champions) Still the odds-on favorite for the UAAP crown, the five-peat seeking Blue Eagles will again rely on its solid core of Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena. The ex-national team player Slaughter is still a steady double-double performer for Ateneo, while the sophomore Ravena is picking up where he left off last season, even drilling a game-winning jumper against UST in the Filoil Preseason Cup. Tonino Gonzaga and Juami Tiongson had a respectable outing in the preseason in supporting Ravena in the backcourt. Nico Salva is still a potent scorer for the blue crew, while JP Erram, Justin Chua, and the returning Oping Sumalinog gives Slaughter an ample help in the paint. But the most intriguing part of Ateneos core would be the comebacking Ryan Buenafe. The 2010 UAAP Finals MVP has slowly gotten his play after struggling early in the Filoil Cup. In their final elimination game against La Salle, he led the Blue Eagles with 21 points and four rebounds in an overtime loss. With Coach Norman Black making his return to the PBA at the end of the season, can Ateneo give their bench tactician one last hardware before he leaves Katipunan? [2] NU Bulldogs (6-8, 5th) This years UAAP hosts are trying to flip the history pages and start a new chapter in the cage wars of the league. After an undefeated outing in the Filoil Cup, NU looks primed for the big one. Coach Eric Altamirano said that Bobby Ray Parks has emerged as the leader of this young Bulldog pack, with last years UAAP MVP continuing to wreak havoc on the competition, averaging 18.6 points per game in the preseason. Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe, hailed as Filoils best defensive player, looks to make a statement in his final playing year by logging double-doubles for NU. Gelo Alolino, Jeoff Javillionar and Denice Villamor has also been vital cogs for the Bulldogs, spreading the floor with long-range shots as Parks slashes his way in the paint. But the biggest revelation for the Bulldogs is the 6foot Mark de Guzman. The transferee from the College of St. Benilde has been a deadly shooter from rainbow country, drilling triples to support Parks and Mbe. An evidence of this is his magnificent 4-of-7 three-point shooting clip in their gritty victory over the San Sebastian Stags, when Parks was sidelined, battling flu-like symptoms. Parks said that they are trying to create a winning tradition for NU. Can this be the year the Bulldogs finally break through? [3] FEU Tamaraws (9-5, Runner-up) For the past two years, FEU ended up in the losing end of the UAAP finals. Coach Bert Flores, this season,

would love to end the trend. The losses serve as a bitter memory for the Tams, more so to 2010 UAAP MVP RR Garcia. But The Rooster has proved in the preseason that they are ready for another run for the UAAP title. Together with 2010 Rookie of the Year Terrence Romeo, FEUs backcourt remains solid. With the departure of agile big man Aldrech Ramos, all eyes will be on Anthony Hargrove, the 6foot-5 transferee from Pennsylvania, to man the paint for the Tamaraws. The American gives FEU a presence in the paint, providing the defense in the post FEU badly needed last season. He will be in the FEU front-court together with forwards Carl Bryan Cruz, Russel Escoto and the Bringas brothers, Arvie and Mark. They say one is enough, and two is too much. Can the Tamaraws get to the finals for the third consecutive time and have the charm to bring the UAAP

championship back to Morayta? [4] UST Growling Tigers (8-6, Semifinalist) The most talked about loss in the off-season for UST is the departure of energy guy Chris Camus. But with a new sports complex erected along Espaa, things are looking up for the Tigers. The boys of Coach Pido Jarencio are looking to get another crack for the UAAP title, with team captain Jeric Fortuna back to lead UST in his final playing year. 2009 Rookie of the Year Jeric Teng and former juniors MVP Kevin Ferrer will try to silence the critics and provide the scoring punch the Tigers badly need. A missed Mythical Five opportunity last season for Karim Abdul will be another motivation for the Cameroonian, who was a force to be reckoned with in the preseason. Another positive development for the Tigers will be the return of Clark Bautista, who can intensify the patented three-point shooting game of UST. Another notable comeback will be that of Aljon Mariano. The 6-foot-3 forward from San Beda High School led the Tigers in the preseason, averaging 15.1 points per game, and recorded 26 points in their mauling of the UP Fighting Maroons in the Filoil Cup. [5] La Salle Green Archers (5-9, 6th) A new age beckons for the Green Archers with Coach Gee Abanilla calling the shots for La Salle, as well as the entry of scintillating rookies in the La Salle line-up. Taking his talents to Taft Avenue, the highly touted rookie from Xavier School, Jeron Teng, is a first-ballot candidate for this years rookie honors, giving what the doctor prescribed for the Green Archers. In his first Ateneo-La Salle showcase, he forced overtime with a clutch triple. The emergence of bruiser Norbert Torres at the post has also been a plus for La Salle, which finished second to the NU Bulldogs in the preseason tournament. The Green Archers guards are also as formidable as ever, with LA Revilla, returning from his foot injury, and Ateneo transferee Mark Tallo doing wonders in the back-court. Almond Vosotros, the former San Sebastian Staglets dead shot, will also chip in with his playmaking and shooting skills. [6] Adamson Falcons (10-4, Semifinalist) The only team to beat Ateneo last season is floundering its way back after losing pivotal parts of last years line-up. With the departure of five standouts of its core last season, coach Leo Austria is looking for a stable leader for this Falcons squad. Alex Nuyles struggled to pick up his game in the preseason, but forward Eric Camson stepped up mightily for Adamson, which failed to register a blip in the preseason radar. Jericho Cruz, the apparent heir to Lester Alvarez point guard duties for the San Marcelino squad, has also proven his worth, while Roider Cabrera can still be a deadly shooter from the three-point line. Perhaps the biggest pressure lies in the hands of 6foot-4 Rodney Brondial, the lone center for Adamson this season. The third year center from Quezon City Academy had a respectable outing in the preseason, once notching a 15-point 10-rebound performance in a late game meltdown against the St. Benilde Blazers. In a season where the Falcons are practically licking the wounds of their losses, can Adamson play as UAAPs spoilers or even cop out a Final Four seat? [7] UP Fighting Maroons (2-12, 8th) It was 26 years ago when UP last won a UAAP mens basketball championship. In the eyes of former UP standout and current San Beda head coach Ronnie Magsanoc, that might have been the last time the

State University had an able body who can man the post, Benjie Paras. This year, the Maroons might beg to differ. Parading big men like holdovers Paolo Romero and Nigerian Alinko Mbah and rookie Matthew Chris Ball, the Maroons will now have a fighting chance in the paint to go along with their scorers, like the oft-trigger happy Mike Silungan. Alvin Padilla, Mark Lopez and Jett Manuel will provide additional scoring options in the wings for coach Ricky Dandan. The biggest surprise for UP in the preseason is the emergence of West Negros recruit Raul Soyud. The 6-foot-4 slotman has surprised many in the Filoil Cup, averaging seven points and five rebounds, not counting the defensive presence he provides in the paint. Another player to watch out for? Former PH Youth standout Henry Asilum, who could provide backcourt stability for the Maroons. [8] UE Red Warriors (3-11, 7th) Still feeling the effects of losing its best players in the past

three years, the UE Red Warriors has not seen much success with coach Jerry Codiera being its bench tactician. But with not much expectation to live up to, wingman Jay-R Sumido, one of the three remaining members of the Season 72 runner-up UE team, can have a pressure-free stint leading this Red Warrior crew. Sophomore playmaker Roy Sumang has emerged as UEs best scorer and, as shown in the preseason, the Warriors can get scoring and defensive binges from JM Noble from time to time. Third-year forward Adrian Santos could be the X-factor for the Red Warriors. The 6foot-3 UE High School standout has picked his spots on the court, and has effectively become UEs prime post player. In an upset over eventual runner-up La Salle in the Filoil Cup, he notched a doubledouble with 20 points and 12 boards. The Warriors will merely be looking to pull off surprises against the other UAAP teams this season. And hopefully, a few of those wins can make the team relevant this season.
