Similar Solids: Assignment 1

Instructions: Answer the whole of the following questions on foolscap papers. Please indicate your name, class and Question numbers explicitly. Leave 2 spaces after every question and underline your answers. Tier A 1. Three cylindrical containers A, B and C are filled with water. The weight of container 640g. (a) Container B is geometrically similar to container A. Given that container B weighs 270g, find the ratio of the surface area of container A to that of container B. (b) Container C has the same height as container A but its base area is 5 times that of container A. Find the weight of the container C. (Ans keys:1(a) 16 : 9, (b) 3200 g) 2. Two buckets are geometrically similar. The ratio of their base areas is 4: 9. Both buckets are filled with water. Find the mass of water in the larger bucket given that the mass of water in the smaller bucket is 16 kg. (Ans keys: 54) 3. During the SST Homecoming funfair, class 211 was selling an isotonic drink called SSTViva to raise funds. SSTViva is sold in bottles of two sizes. The bottles are geometrically similar to each other. The heights of the larger bottle and the smaller bottle are 20 cm and 15 cm respectively. (a) If the surface area of the larger bottle is A cm2, express the surface area in cm2 of the smaller bottle in terms of A. (b) The capacity of the smaller bottle is 270 ml. Calculate the capacity of the larger bottle.

1.

The diagram shows a stand in the shape of a frustum, which is cut from a right circular cone of height h cm. It has 2 circular bases of radius 60 cm and 100 cm respectively. Given that the height of the stand is 80 cm, (a) show that the value of h is 200. [1] Hence, find (b) the volume of the stand, (c) the curved surface area of the stand. [3] [4]

(Curved surface area of a cone = radius slant height.)

(Ans keys:1(b) 1 640 000, (c) 44 958.8 45 000 cm2)

2. Figure 1A shows a pyramid-shaped container made of thin metal sheet, constructed by the Boy Scouts. The container has a rectangular base ABCD where AB = 12 cm and BC = 10 cm. The vertex V is 8 cm vertically above O, where O is the centre of the rectangular base. Calculate (a) the length of VM, where M is the midpoint of AD. [1] (b) the total external surface area of the pyramid. [3] (c) the volume of the pyramid. [1] The height of the contained liquid is 3 cm. [See Figure 1B] (d) Calculate the volume of the liquid. [3] Figure 2 shows an upright conical vessel of height 8 cm. It has the same capacity as the pyramid. (e) Calculate the radius, r, of the cone. [2] (f) The liquid is poured from the pyramid into the cone. Calculate the radius, x, of horizontal surface of the liquid. [2]

[Volume of pyramid = base area height, Volume of cone = , use ] (Ans keys: 2(a) M=10cm, (b) 333cm2, (c) 320cm2, (d) 242cm3, (e) 6.18cm, (f) 5.63cm)
