Tutorial 8

1. Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area in Figure 1 about the x-axis and
the y-axis. Then compute its polar moment of inertia and its radii of gyration about
the x- and the y-axes. [12 marks]

2. Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area in Figure 2 about the x-axis and
the y-axis. Then find its polar moment of inertia and its radii of gyration about the x-
axis and the y-axis. [12 marks]

3. Calculate the moment of inertia of the shaded area below with respect to the x-axis
and the y-axis. Then find its polar moment of inertia. [12 marks]

4. By using the Parallel-Axis Theorem, determine the moment of inertia of a rectangular

area with sides 4 m along the y-axis and 3 m along the x-axis, with respect to

(a) the axis y’ which is located 2 m to the left side of and parallel with the y-axis.
(b) the axis x’ which is located 2 m below the bottom side of and parallel with the x-
axis. [12 marks]

5. Calculate the moment of inertia of the shaded area in Figure 5 about the centroidal x
and y axes. (Take C = (0,0) ) [12 marks]
