A Message from Jumaane

Dear Friends, I cannot believe the summer has gone by so quickly! I hope you and your family enjoyed plenty of sunshine and activity. Some of my best memories of the past few months were of spending time with constituents around the 45 th District, at block parties and ball games alike. As our young people return to school, lets focus on giving them a safe place to learn and grow. One thing you can do is can take part in one of the many back-to-school events and donating supplies to children in need. Another is getting involved in our effort to take back our streets from gun violence; check out Whats Happening Around the 45th? for details on this weekends Occupy the Corners. Update from City Hall

As co-chair of the Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, Council Member Williams has been hard at work with academics and community leaders to find a multifaceted approach that will help lower shootings citywide. With his leadership, as well as that of Speaker Christine Quinn and his co-chair, Council Member Fernando Cabrera, the City Council approved $4.8 million in funding for the Anti-Gun Violence Initiative, the only new initiative approved in the Fiscal Year 2013 budget.

JUMAANE IN THE NEWS

One of the biggest elements of the initiative is the CeaseFire program, a public health model designed to reduce and prevent violent incidents across the five boroughs. It is based on a tested model of violence interruption and personal engagement, providing immediate response to respond to and prevent shootings.
Council Member Williams has brought his results-based accountability approach to the Task Force, which will help in evaluating the progress of the pilot programs that will be launched in the coming year. This is the same analysis he uses to judge the non-profit organizations that receive funding from his office. This method helps ensure that all efforts are targeted toward the shared goal of reducing gun violence. A formal report will be released by Council Member Williams and the Task Force in the coming days, which will detail their findings and their recommendations to date.

On August 18th, Council Member Williams attended a block party on Glendale Court which also served as an opportunity for attendees to donate school supplies to Haiti.

1) What work do you do in the 45th?

I work as an independent contractor for various political outlets. 2) Why did you decide to get involved in the community?

Many years ago, there was a hole directly in front of my property. Initially, I was told that there was nothing to be done regarding the hole. I decided to take a stand and reach out to the appropriate parties to get it fixed. After I succeeded in fixing the hole, I reached out to my neighbors who had similar community related complaints, and Citizens for A Better Community was formed. 3) Tell me a valuable experience you had in your service. During our annual Family Day, we issue scholarships to our young people entering college who participate in community service. We have issued approximately 25 scholarships within the past 11 years. The look of gratitude and appreciation is a fulfilling and rewarding experience. 4) How can people get involved?

On July 29th, Council Member Williams visited the basketball camp at the P.S. 269 CAMBA Beacon Program, getting in a quick game of two-on-two as well.

First, understand that this is their community, where they live and their families grow. Second, reach out to their block associations, attend meetings and get involved in community projects. Lastly, understand that there is power in numbers.

On July 24th, Council Member Williams danced with local senior citizens at a group birthday party held at the Glenwood Senior Center.

GET ACTIVE!
From August 26th until the 31st, Council Member Williams, along with the Brooklyn Center for Quality Life and Mount Zion Church of God, will partner with churches, elected officials, government agencies, businesses and scores of community organizations for Brooklyn Community Week, an effort to help build a stronger community and to promote social unity. There will be activities addressing family life, immigration and more. A highlight will be the Crime and Gun Violence in Central Brooklyn Town Hall on Monday, August 27th from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Neighborhood Highlights
On August 18th, Council Member Williams presented a City Council proclamation signed by him and Speaker Christine Quinn to Radio Soleil, a 24-hour Haitian radio station, on the occasion of its twentieth year of broadcasting. On July 26th, Council Member Williams addressed the officers of the 63rd Precinct at their roll call, as part of his ongoing commitment to advancing the relationship between the NYPD and the communities it serves. On July 24th, Council Member Williams read a selection from Langston Hughes to youth ages 5 to 12 attending Imagine U, staying to answer some their questions. Want to add news to a future newsletter?
