1. Title of the Article: Learning The Hard Way 2. Author(s): Maggie Tiojakin 3. Explain briefly in four or five sentences what the article is about. The article points out many flaws in the educational system of Indonesia and how those flaws affect us and the future generation. Some factors of the flaws in the educational system of Indonesia are poor school facilities, incompetent and under qualified teachers, and also the lack of contribution from society, among many others. The article also points out that 30% of high school graduates will work menial and sometimes illegal jobs in order to suffice to their daily needs, 12% of college students are always unemployed at any given time, and that in some cases, having a college degree does not really guarantee a secure job position. Even though we are very much ahead of Sri Lanka in development, according to the Asian-South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education and the Global Campaign for Education, their educational system is still far superior compared to ours, with Sri Lanka receiving a B while we score a big, fat F. 4. What is the writers message or purpose in writing this article? The writer has shared this information to us all with the intention of getting us all involved with the educational system of Indonesia. In the article it was stated that education is complex, because it cuts across the board and everyone is a part of it and its true. If we can get everyone to understand what the problem is, and have them contribute to helping the education system, no matter how small their contributions are, then everything else will just fall into place. But until then we need to have everyone informed and on the same page so that change would be possible. 5. Give your personal comment on the article as a conclusion of your article review. In my opinion the educational system of Indonesia can be improved if we embrace and adapt the educational system of first world countries. We would not be necessarily adapting their system a full 100%, but if we can equalize their system standards, such as better qualified teachers and curriculum that will spark the students interests, only then will the educational system of Indonesia will start to improve and have a positive impact on the country and its students.
