Checking of Seismic and Tsunami Hazardfor Coastal NPP of Chinese Continent
Chang Xiangdong ** Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center, MEP, ChinaNational Nuclear Safety Administration have made a checking on seismic and tsunami hazardfor coastal NPPs of Chinese continent after Japanese Fukushima nuclear accident caused byearthquake tsunami. The results of the checking are introduced briefly in this paper, includingthe evaluations of seismic and tsunami hazard in NPP siting period, checking results on theseismic and tsunami hazard, as well as actions in future. As of 2011, there are thirteen NPP sites in coast of Chinese continent, which has fifteenoperational nuclear units, twenty six units in the construction and still ten units in the planningstatus. The regulations and standards on NPP siting in China are basically based on the IAEAcodes and standards. Some adjustments are made, such as the lowest limit of design basisearthquake of NPP site is adjusted with domestic seismic activity background from 0.1g to0.15g.Both methods deterministic and probabilistic are used to evaluate seismic and hydrologicalhazard of each site, and take the bigger value of the two kind methods as the design basis of the NPP site. NPP sites are usually selected in low seismicity area in China. The seismicdesign of NPP must envelop evaluated ground motion of the site and have a proper safetymargin. Because there are high intensity Typhoon in east and south coastal area of theChinese continent, the storm surge is the foremost flood event to determine design basisflood. The water level from tsunami is much smaller compared with the storm surges. The new data have been used for checking seismic hazard of each NPP sites in the nuclearinspection after Fukushima nuclear accident. The results of the checking indicate thatachieved seismic design basis ground motion of NPP sites is still reasonable and conservative.Seismic hazard evaluation in the site selection stage is accord with the nuclear safetyregulations and standards.Since disastrous tsunami occurred usually at the subduction zone of great plate, it had beenevaluated specially that the possible effect from both Ryukyu trench and Manila trench in thechecking. Parameters of Tsunami Sources have been evaluated based on historical earthquake, scale of subduction zones and fault segmentation. The maximum magnitude in Ryukyutrench is assumed with M8.5 and Manila trench is M8.8
however recorded maximumearthquake in history of Ryukyu and Manila trench respectively is M8.0 and M8.4. Tsunamiamplitude at coastal water located NPP sites had been calculated with the numerical model. The tsunami effect for the NPP sites located coast of East China Sea and Yellow Sea ismainly from the Ryukyu trench subduction zone, but the calculated tsunami amplitude is verysmall generally less than 0.5m. For the NPP sites located coast of South China Sea, thetsunami effect is mainly from the Manila trench subduction zone. The calculated results showthat the tsunami wave from Manila trench subduction zone has a relatively large impact toGuangdong coastal NPP sites. Calculated tsunami wave amplitude in Dayawan NPP sitereached 2.7m, but it is still lower than the 5.30m water level from storm surge in the site.Survey about tsunami sediments have been accomplished in checking of seismic and tsunamihazard for coastal NPP of Chinese continent. Investigation points have 55 altogether along
