KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North BUS ROUTES

The Transit Commission approved changes to bus routes throughout Ottawa which will take effect on Sept. 4. The final plan had a number of changes for routes in Kanata North from both the first proposal and the revised plan. The Commission also delegated to OC Transpo staff the ability to make further changes provided that the changes would not add additional costs. For Kanata North the 68 will add Keyrock and remain going down Campeau rather than going to Terry Fox Station. The 60 route is unchanged. The 68 will follow its existing route to Teron/Beaverbrook and then go south to Katimavik Road and back to the Centrum via Katimavik and Kanata Ave. It will run in both directions. The proposed loop along Varley has been removed. The 65 was not restored rather the 165 will run in rush hours only to take people to the Eagleson Park and Ride where they can transfer to buses going into central Ottawa. I am having further discussions on whether a limited number of 65s could replace the 165 at the peak time since the 60 going along Teron is so full at those times that it doesnt stop. Id appreciate your views on that issue. The 164 in Kanata North along Campeau is the same. The 182 is extended into Kanata along Carling to serve the business park during peak hours. The 169 is a shuttle from the Eagleson Park and Ride into the Kanata North Business Park in peak hours. The 93 is a major route, 7 days per week, running from Bayshore along the 417, then along Teron and March Road to Terry Fox where it will turn along Terry Fox to Helmsdale, then to Shirleys Brook to Marconi to Klondike to Halton to Flamborough and back to March Road via Terry Fox. Changes approved will bring service into Briarbrook and Morgans Grant. To view the changes on a map go to the OC Transpo website, click on network optimization and then on maps of recommended changes scroll down to the Kanata maps. The timetables for all routes will be developed over the next two months. The present route arrangements remain until September.

KANATA NORTH RECREATION CENTRE

Work is underway on revising the plans for the Rec Centre to meet the Citys budget. The preliminary design shows that most features will be retained, including the double gym, pool area, community rooms and a smaller fitness centre. You can view the design and make final comments on May 10th from 7 to 9 pm in the Mlacak Centre. Plans are to go to tender for the construction of the building and site works at the end of May.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION STARTING

Work to complete the construction of March Road, Kanata Ave and Terry Fox Drive have started. Watch for signs about lane reductions and detours. This week Ill be taking a motion to Council to have the first part of the Goulbourn Forced Road start with a request for transfer of funds from other road projects which came in under budget. That section is needed to provide safety for students who will be attending the new elementary school on Keyrock. The road will be built to urban standards including sidewalks on both sides of the road. Work is also continuing on Carling Ave with completion of the installation of a new water main and paving of the road. Along Campeau you will see construction of the missing sections of sidewalks on the sourth side of the road. Along Beaverbrook Road a new sanitary sewer will be built as part of the work undertaken, following the sewer backups of 2009, to correct problems with the sewage system.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
A number of new residential developments will soon be starting in Kanata North. Minto will be doing a housing development on the land next to their shopping centre on Klondike and on land they have purchased next to St. Johns Church and Blue Heron Co-Op. I will be holding community meetings on each of these in May or June. Check my website for the time and place. The Broughton lands are being rapidly developed and work will soon start on the Richardson subdivision. With the approval of the studies for the Carp River I expect work to begin on lands west of Didsbury within the next year.
