CHANGE IN ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED POPULATION IN THE GROSSE POINTE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM (GPPSS) AND PEER DISTRICTS

An analysis prepared by Brendan Walsh

www.brendanwalsh.us

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PRESENTATION?

What it is: An effort to share data to spur dialog and encourage reflection on our interpretation and reliance on standardized tests A correlation of enrollment in Free and Reduced Lunch (FRLE) programs and rankings of schools that are predicated on standardized test scores A presentation of data to show the significant change in the Grosse Pointe Public School Systems FRLE from 1995 to 2011 What it is not: An argument that lower income status of students and families causes lower test scores An argument that all test scores do not matter An argument that by virtue of having an increasing lower income population that a district should lower its standards of excellence An argument that by virtue of having an increased lower income student population that a school district is in a state of demise
