Monday, September 17, 2012

Hi Im McKenzie & im JESSICA

Monday, September 17, 2012

(mckenzie) After visiting the Rosedale community and talking with some of the communities advocates and doing a research we became inspired to create a project to even further the issue of kids and their eating habits.

Monday, September 17, 2012

(j)We saw a diverse community with a lot of room for growth and people that are willing to take part. Our research lead us to this problem...

The Problem
Kids understand the dierence between healthy and unhealthy food, but do they understand the long term eects of their choices?

Monday, September 17, 2012

(m)Kids understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy food, but do they understand the long term effects of their choices? we know kids know what is healthy and what is not, but do they know how these choices are affecting their body and mind? Even their learning at school everyday?

Monday, September 17, 2012

(j)We believe that if this idea and message are spoken at the right volume and the proper delivery has just enough electricity, it will be reected in the choices these kids make.

Our Audience
Children who are currently enrolled in grades kindergarten through h grade.

Monday, September 17, 2012

(m)For our audience we are targeting elementary school children (grades k - 5). We feel its important to target kids within this age group because it is when they are most impressionable; most malleable.

Habits are Hard to Break!

Monday, September 17, 2012

(j)we are not trying to solve childhood obesity, we are hoping that we can somehow increase the consumption of healthier snacks and meals as well as helping them understand the benets and disadvantages of their choices in the long run.

A bag of chips or an apple?

vs.

Monday, September 17, 2012

(m)Kids are fully aware that an apple has much more benecial nutritional value than a bag of chips. They even understand that you should eat more apples than chips, however most of them still choose that bag of chips. Why is this?

Monday, September 17, 2012

To put it plain and simple...they dont care. They dont care about what they are putting in their body because they cant visualize what is happening internally and can not foresee the longterm effects of unhealthy food habits.

(m)The majority of kids understand what healthy eating is. They know the facts and some of them accept the idea. However it is our mission to take these kids CLICK from knowing the facts to acting on the opinion and then hopefully becoming an advocate for this cause.

children might not have adults or peers in their lives who model healthy eating behaviors they can emulate.

(j)Parents and teachers have a responsibility here too. Ever heard the phrase monkey see, monkey do? Children usually follow this rule.

Monday, September 17, 2012

They do as they are shown, so in effect we are hoping to create a solution that helps the adults in their immediate environment to keep in mind that they are being closely monitored by the little ones. while the kids are our main priority it is important that teachers and parents remain a part of the equation to nd a helpful, lasting solution.

(j) Because of their advocacy for a health awareness, we plan on focusing on Frank Rushton Elementary School.

Monday, September 17, 2012

(m)After speaking to Mary Welsh, the principle at Rushton, we learned that the school participates in energy balance for kids programs and the school garden project. These things give them great resources about healthy food choices, we want to give them motivation and incentive to follow through.

they know the how

Monday, September 17, 2012

These kids understand what healthy is and how to get there, the activities and what to eat and cook, CLICK we are trying to provide them with the why? Why are these activities important and why its more benecial to choose the apple over that bag of chips.
