MINUTES

Draper Elementary PTA Board Meeting September 4, 2012 Present: Ashley Boyle, Kamie Brown, Tammy Hall, Kerri Brown, Kenna Sorensen, Dawnita Hendricks, Shauna Call, Jolynn Skousen, Erin Miller, Alison Parkinson, Sandee Smith, Brenda Andrewsen, Jaime Free, Melinda Colton Volunteer Hours Reported: 303 (June-August 2012) Meeting Called to Order: 9:07 a.m. Reverence: Shauna Call Pledge: Dawnita Hendricks Minutes: A motion by Melinda Colton passed to approve the May 2012 minutes. 1st: Ashley Boyle 2nd: Brenda Andrewsen Financial Report: Alison Parkinson Treasurer Alison Parkinson reviewed the budget and the process for reimbursements. Our PTA currently has an opening balance of $13,874. She also presented the 2012-13 proposed budget that will be voted on by parents at Curriculum Night on Sept. 12. Please remember that all expenses should be cleared with president/treasurer prior to spending them. Commissioners must sign the check request form for any reimbursement relating to their committee (including reimbursements to chair people or committee members). That way we know the commissioner is aware of any amounts coming out of their budget category. All reimbursements must have a receipt/invoice. Do not put personal items on a receipt and cross them out if at all possible. Credit card receipts need to be the detailed receipt. Reimbursement checks will be written 30 minutes prior to each monthly Board meeting. Check request forms are in the sick under in the Treasurers box. Upcoming Calendar Items: Melinda Colton Sept. 12: Curriculum Night, 6:30 p.m. We need signups for our membership and volunteer tables. The tables will be located in the front hall and in the gym and need 3 volunteers for each table for 30-minute shifts. Melinda will email signup sheets out to everyone. Sept. 13: Dads & Donuts, 8 a.m. Sept. 14: Kickoff assembly for Reflections and Fun Run, 9 a.m. Sept. 18: Council PTA Meeting, 1 p.m., Draper Elementary Library. This is the one meeting the entire Board should attend this year. Sept. 21: Room Parent Orientation, 2 p.m. Sept. 24: National A Day to Eat With Your Children Sept. 25: Chick-fil-A Spirit Night, 5-7 p.m.

Executive Report: President Ashley Boyle Ashley thanked everyone who helped with the welcome back lunch for the faculty. She discussed Curriculum Night. The PTA will provide cookies so teachers wont need to worry about providing refreshments in their classrooms. Parents can order Spirit Wear this year (the same as last year, except we have added an additional girls fitted t-shirt in pink) Board members were told where the PTA closet is located. The PTA has a banner in the closet that should be put up for each PTA-sponsored event. PTA board members were encouraged to wear the PTA lanyards available in the sick room. President Elect Kerri Brown: She is putting together a slide show for Curriculum Night that highlights the work of the PTA. She is looking for photos of students involved in Reflections and Art Through the Ages. She noted that another school calls their Dads & Donuts Books and Breakfast. School Administration Report: Principal Kenna Sorensen She expressed appreciation to the PTA and their involvement at the school. She provided a renovation update and said the roof will be completely finished by next week. Skylights were added throughout the school and some teachers arent even using their lights because of the additional light the skylights add to classrooms. Many walls have been seismically upgraded and 47 cost-savings air conditioning units have been added to the school. A new playground will be installed and completed by Oct. 15. Draper Elementary is scheduled for a new sound system this year in the gym and cafeteria and will get an interior remodel next year. The school has added three new teachers and three teachers from Taiwan to teach Chinese immersion. Teacher Representative: Monica Lewis Mrs. Lewis will introduce a new language arts curriculum at the Curriculum Night. She said it aligns with the Common Core and is rich in writing and literacy. Ashley Boyle asked Mrs. Lewis to let teachers know that the most recent PTA assessment showed that parents would like more advance notice for field trips and class programs/activities. Community Involvement Report: Kamie Brown She needs more Boxtop volunteers. Education Report: Dawnita Hendricks There was a discussion about whether or not to continue the Distinguished Dragon Program. Dawnita has a new program she is going to discuss with Ms. Sorensen. She is ready for the first Dads & Donuts on Sept. 13. EML Commissioner (Emerging Minority Leader): We still do not have a EML Commissioner. Please send your suggestions to Ashley Boyle. Health Report: Jaime Free

The Fun Run has been moved to this fall, Oct. 5, so the money can be spent this school year. She is working with Scheels on donations for the students. She will need a lot of volunteers to help with the Fun Run. The kickoff assembly is Sept. 14. Individual Development Report: Tammy Hall The theme for this years Reflections Program is The Magic of a Moment. The kickoff assembly for the program will be Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. It will be held in conjunction with the Fun Run kickoff assembly. Legislative Report: Jolynn Skousen She encouraged PTA members to vote this election season. Membership Report: Brenda Andrewsen and Erin Miller Their goal is to change parents attitudes about PTA and what it does for students. They stressed the importance of giving children what they need. Everyone on the PTA Board is required to be a PTA member. They introduced the vote theme for this years membership drive. Newsletter: Melinda Colton The September newsletter will be emailed to parents Sept. 5. Presidential Fitness: Brenda Andrewsen and Erin Miller Testing is Sept. 10-14 and 17-21. Picture Day is Sept. 12 so the photos will be taken in the KIVA. Those students with PE that day will have their pictures taken first. Safety & Welfare: Shauna Call Red Ribbon Week is Oct. 22-26 The committee is compiling emergency kits for all students. A table will be set up at Curriculum Night as well as Dads & Donuts explaining the purpose of the kits to parents. Volunteers Report: Alison Parkinson Room Parent Orientation is Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Next Meeting: Oct. 2, 9 a.m. Reverence: Kenna Sorensen Pledge: Kerri Brown Adjourned: 10: 34 a.m.
