The results of our survey of likely voters in Californias 9th Congressional District show Democratic Congressman Jerry McNerney in a strong position to be re-elected. McNerney currently leads his Republican opponent, Ricky Gill, by nine points.

If the election for Congress was today, 47% of likely voters say they would vote for Jerry McNerney, and 38% would vote for Ricky Gill. McNerney is viewed favorably by 33% of voters, while 25% view him unfavorably. Gill, on the other hand, is viewed unfavorably by almost as many voters as view him favorably (25% favorable/23% unfavorable). This nearly matches the generic party preference of the district. A generic Democratic candidate for Congress leads a generic Republican by 11 points, 49% to 38%. President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in this district by nine points, 51% to 42%, and Senator Dianne Feinstein leads Elizabeth Emken by 14 points, 49% to 35%.

This memorandum summarizes results from a live telephone poll of 400 randomly selected likely voters in Californias 9th Congressional District conducted October 8-10, 2012. The estimation error associated with a sample of 400 is 4.9% at the 95% confidence interval. This means that in 95 of 100 cases, the results of this poll are within plus or minus 4.9 points of the results that would have been obtained if all likely voters had been interviewed. Note that special care was taken to ensure the geographic and demographic divisions of the actual electorate are properly represented.
