Its almost time for Halloween, and theres only one question on everyones minds: What am I going to wear??!!! The great thing about this holiday is the opportunity to express yourself in a myriad of ways. You can channel your inner movie star and go out dressed as Audrey Hepburn, get in touch with your dark side and go as a blood-sucking vampire or head to the costume shop for a teeny-tiny version of a professional uniform. Whatever costume direction you choose to go in, from scary to sweet, clever to common, have fun with it! Go all out. As for me, I think Im going back to my standby costume, channeling Cleopatra. It works with my dark hair, and I love adding gold jewelry and lots of eyeliner! Happy Halloween!

web 3.0 Things That Go Bump on the Web

Looking for something to scare yourself and your friends in late October? Here are a few sites to help you get a thrill this year, or to irritate/horrify your friends.
Ah, Halloween. A time of abundant sugary snacks, people in sexy costumes (for those of us lucky enough to be invited to these sorts of parties) and attempts to scare one another with videos, images or other things that can either bring laughter or pants-ruining fear. The internet is no exception to this holiday, and can scare you in ways that film, TV or books cant. Here are a few Halloween-themed internet phenomena that are worth looking into. Games: There are Flash and Java games all over the place on Newgrounds and Kongregate, among other sites. Most of them are just plain silly, but there are a couple that might just give you a bit of a shock. For example, a flash game called Monster Basement is more cheesy than scary, but there are a few moments that are a bit jarring if youre not ready for them, such as finding a screwdriver jammed through an eyeball inside an envelope. Another game, Hotel 626, (oddly made to promote Doritos) has quite a few unusual moments for what amounts to sponsor-ware. memes: Most memes are just stupid, to be honest. Whether or not theyre the funny sort of stupid or the annoying sort can really depend. However, there are a few memes that can kinda be a little off-putting at the wrong time. For example, the Shadowlurker has become a great representation of fear or monsters within the pantheon of rage faces. Videos: Ah, but what Halloween-themed column about internet culture would be complete without a reference to YouTube videos? One notable video that comes to mind, Chainsaw Maid, involves claymation zombies vomiting up organs before being cut to bits by the title character. Its funny, but its still a little disturbing. Almost par for the course for Japan, though. One last thing to consider as far as horror goes is the site known as Creepypasta. In essence, its a site based off of creepy stories in general, or rather, stories that try to be creepy. Some are just terribly written or incomprehensible, but others do well in their own right and may actually be scary. I hope you have a good Halloween, Normanites. Eat well, drink well and watch out for the chainsaw-wielding maniac hiding in the backseat of your car.

Retro Review:

Resident Evil (1996)

>> I remember playing the original game on my friends PlayStation back in elementary school. I remember not enjoying it much because it was hard to control and the content scared me at the time. In my defense, I was seven years old. Playing it now, it doesnt seem nearly as scary, though its not without some bonechilling moments. Admittedly, when you compare the early PS1 graphics to modern HD graphics, it doesnt seem quite so intimidating as it did in those days, and the camera angles made things far more difficult than they probably needed to be. What always made it difficult was the limited amount of supplies, including limited saves. It took some effort to beat this game, but it was pretty satisfying to do it.

Resident Evil 6
>> What better way to get into the Halloween spirit than to review the latest addition to one of survival horrors seminal franchises? RE6 is an interesting experience, to say the least. Basically, four different stories play out in this game, which can be fun, but it all starts to feel really disjointed before too long. While some of the scenes bring back the sense of dread behind the next door like the early games of the series, others seem like the kind of run-and-gun insanity from games like Gears of War: a good adrenaline rush, but not particularly scary. If you cant find a good movie on Halloween night, this games worth a rental. >>

Stumped on Halloween costume ideas? Never fear!

Tweet your thoughts @boydstreet

Costume season is upon us. For the Greek community, this time of the year is met with multiple date parties, costume parties and just plain ol excuses for dressing up like someone else and looking fantastic. As a member of a fraternity or sorority, there are a few things that differ with costume choices. If you havent quite decided what you or your friends want to be, maybe you will be inspired by some of these Greek-letter-clad trendsetters. the Group costume Starting off, sorority girls love their group costumes. Whats better than one Disney princess? Every single one of your friends dressed up as a different Disney princess! There is Pocahontas, Mulan, Jasmine, Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Belle from Beauty and the Beast, among others, which provides plenty of variety for everyone. Another idea is to stick to a certain show or group. One costume option that I consistently see sorority gals gear up in is the Spice Girls ensemble. Or, all of your sisters could dress in fancy clothes and be contestants on The Bachelor. If your group is co-ed you could try to be the cast of How I Met Your Mother, Friends or Scooby Doo. For the more adventurous ladies out there, try dressing up like your favorite frat star. The reactions you can garner with that last outfit are just priceless. the clever costume Now, these concepts are much more prevalent for the fraternity men than for the ladies, but if you want to try and pull it off, go for it! This is more for the non-costume wearer in the bunch; we all have that friend that no matter how hard we try, there is just no getting them into the dressing-up portion of Halloween. But this year, try getting them a t-shirt that can work as a costume. Some of the best ones I have seen are Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and superheroes like Spiderman. Even if your broseph wont go head to toe in Batman paraphernalia, at least he wont be That Guy who thinks he is too fratty to be in the Halloween spirit. No one likes That Guy. the last minute costume While most of the folks that I know have been planning their costumes since long before the OU/Texas blowout, theres always a few of us who forget about Halloween until six hours before the party we are supposed to be at commences. If you are a big-time procrastinator and all of the good costumes are sold out, a great piece of advice is to be a famous person or someone who is well-known at the party you are going to. For the ladies that have ever gone to prom or a formal, a simple sash and tiara can transform you into Miss America. If you are a guy, you can suit up and be Barney Stinson or add some sunglasses to be someone from The Matrix or the Men in Black series. Finding your costume You can find costumes in almost every Halloween store from here to Tulsa, but it is also simple to make these costumes at home. Keep a lookout at thrift stores like Goodwill, too. Especially if you are transforming yourself into someone from a certain era, these kinds of places can be a life saver. Yet, If the internet is more your pace, try website Polyvore.com, where there are ideas of how to transform regular clothes in your closet to cute little ensembles. Some of the best can be found by Googling Disney bound polyvore. If you cant find something you like in the stores or in your closet, grab a friend that knows how to sew and make your way over to a craft store like Hobby Lobby. There are hundreds of patterns to choose from, and you can guarantee that no one will be wearing the same thing you are. Above all, fully commit to your costume. If you are going to go for the drop-dead gorgeous scantily clad look, own it. If you want to go for the super-goofy, then make sure you have the confidence to rock it no matter what. Halloween only happens once a year, so make sure to live it up.

From the Thursday before Halloween to the Saturday after, we here at Boyd Street have lined up some premiere events for our readership. Whether you are still in grade school or sleeping through college, weve got the stuff to keep your next couple of weekends booked and filled with fun!

panam Halloween party Oct. 26th If the party scene is your scene, look no further than the PanAm Halloween party. Anyone over 18 is invited to strut around in the best costume they have, group or individual, for cash prizes. Voting for the contest starts at 11:30pm, and the winners will be announced when the clock strikes midnight. The party is at Joys Palace, but transportation will be provided from the Traditions East Apartment buildings from 9:45- 11pm. Drink specials will also be available. This event is $5 for anyone over 21 and $10 for anyone between 18-20, and you dont have to be an OU student to attend! Ou sculptures Fuego Friday Iron pour Oct. 26th If you are looking for something neat to do that is out of the box, or mold in this case, there will be an iron pour happening 7-10pm at the OU ceramics facility. At this event, professionals will pour a lava-like substance into casts, or molds, to create different pieces of metalwork. At the end of the night, the remaining liquid will be poured into jack-o-lanterns to illuminate the night. This event is great for people of all ages and is free to watch. sooner Ballroom Ghostly Gala Nov. 2nd Love some ballroom dance? Have no fear, the Ghostly Gala is here! Gear up in your dancing-friendly costume in the Molly Shi Ballroom from 7:30-11pm. Feeling a little insecure about your skills? There are dance lessons starting at 6:30pm. There will be free food, so really, no excuse is a good excuse not to join in on the fun. Anyone is welcome to come and admission is free for OU students, $5 for non-students.

For kids
tG Farms pumpkin patch Oct. 24-28 Nothing says Halloween like picking out a pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern, and TG Farms Pumpkin Patch has plenty to choose from. A petting zoo, hayrides and pony rides are just a few examples of the other fun things to do there. Go to Tgfarms.com for more information. trick or treat on North Greek Oct. 26th If you cant take your kids out on the actual day of Halloween, but still want them to have some trick-or-treating fun, the sorority and fraternity houses at OUs North Greek will be hosting something right up your alley. Starting at 6pm and going until 8:30pm at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house (720 Elm Ave.), kids can swing by to collect candy until their hearts are content. This event is open to all elementary school-aged children and is free of charge. mummy & son Dance Oct. 26th This event is a costume dance for mothers and their sons, held at the 12th Avenue Parks and Rec Center. Now Im not sure if it is the college kid in me, but I find this idea completely precious. Not only will there be some sweet moves on the floor, but other exciting activities such as sampling delicious treats! What boy doesnt love that? There will be two separate times for mumsters and their boys to come: 6-7:30pm and 8-9:30pm. It is open to any son aged 4-12 and his mom, and admission is $5 for each person. Tickets must be purchased in advance; more information can be found at normanfun.com. rambling Oaks assisted living trick or treat Oct. 31st Come on down and bring the kids to a safe trick-or-treat, held at Rambling Oaks Assisted Living Center from 6-9pm. Peace of mind for yourself, joy for others, and a great time for your youngsters is included. This event is free of charge, but you do have to wear a smile! The moral of this Halloween story is that you dont have to break an arm or a leg or drive all the way out to OKC for a good time. With some happy thoughts and great costumes you can be on your way to a stellar holiday.

Mel Guapos Halloween Special
Whether or not we like to admit it, the truth of the matter is that were getting deep into holiday season. Halloween is at hand, and next month theyll start turning up the Christmas (Thanksgiving hardly matters anymore except as a Christmas pre-game). Its important that we talk about what this means for music. Everywhere across America, Halloween music is starting to get a lot of play, and after Halloween ends, its going to be Christmas music for two months. Suffice to say, weve got a long wait before we can normalize our playlists again, so we might as well talk about the elephant in the room. Im talking about holiday music. There are several schools of thought on holiday music. There are those who immediately write off holiday-specific tunes as unserious songs that should be ignored. I take issue with that. My argument, essentially, is this: we have a philosophical duty to respect Halloween songs and we must judge them within their own, holiday-specific context. This also presumes that we have a moral duty to listen to holiday-specific music within its appropriate seasonal context, i.e. now that its Halloween its time to listen to Halloween music. (If you find any inconsistencies in my articles, please email me at mrmelguapo@ gmail.com) So lets talk about what kind of options we have in regards to our Halloween playlists. Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett is an obvious choice to get your Halloween party wiggling, but it wont do much to set an eerie atmosphere. If you want to set a creepy vibe, you cant go wrong with the score to John Carpenters Halloween. Also, Freddys Coming For You from A Nightmare on Elm Street is great tune to put on after you turn all the lights out in the house and light a few candles. Its great soundtrack for a sance or summoning spirits.

By MelGuapo

(Heres a great trick-or-treat idea: Before your roommate gets home, get a backup receiver for your stereo system, and hook the speakers to this new receiver, but leave the regular receiver where it normally sits, and leave it powered on so that the power light is still shining. Thats the dummy stereo. Hook up your other receiver to the speakers, then put Freddys Coming For You on repeat and turn it up extremely loud. Then leave and wait for your roommate to get home. He or she will try to shut off the dummy stereo receiver but the music will still be playing and, naturally, theyll think Freddy is coming to get them. Great idea, Mel!) One of the ultimate tunes for the Halloween season is a song that isnt specifically about Halloween at all. Its not about creatures of darkness or Halloween night or violence and horror and gore. Its mostly a kind of voodoo love song, and its titled, I Put A Spell On You, by Screamin Jay Hawkins. If you search YouTube for the song, the first video to show up is one of the greatest live performances Ive ever seen. This is a great song to ease you into the Halloween spirit. The fact that its not overtly about the Halloween holiday allows you to get into the mood without jumping right into ghosts and goblins and mummies and vampires. Spend four and a half minutes in Screamin Jay Hawkins creepy world, however, and youll be nearly there. And if you want some local music in your Halloween playlist, theres a lot out there to choose from. Fright Night Club are the ultimate Halloween and horror fan boys. Fright Night Club was originally the concept of Colin Nance (of The Gentle Art of Floating and Colin Nance). Since then it has developed into a small collective of artists from the Norman/Oklahoma City area. Fright Night Club has been released every year during the Halloween season for the past four years, and is a collection of darker, often horror-film-centric songs that celebrate our dark sides. (Available for free download at frightnightclub.bandcamp.com) One of my favorite Halloween tunes was released years ago by Normans own Evangelicals. (Download it from NPR by Googling Evangelicals Halloween Song and look for an article entitled, Its Halloween, So Be of Good Cheer.) Its an eerie trip through a paranoid Halloween night that ends happily with front man Josh Jones signing off with an Ill see you around. And dont forget the mysterious Spooklight record released by the Norman band of the same name. Legend has it that the music is cursed. You can find it on Spotify and iTunes by searching Spooklight. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (If you find any inconsistencies in this article, please email my editor at mrmelguapo@gmail.com)

No two college football programs represent the rich tradition and pageantry of the glorious sport than that of The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the Oklahoma Sooners. Sure, the annual matchup against the hated Texas Longhorns or the Bedlam Game against Oklahoma State have a yearly sense of must win, but no other matchup brings the ire of the Sooner Nation than when the Sooners play the Irish. Is it the fact that the Irish are 8-1 all-time against the Sooners, or is it because the Irish stopped the 47-game winning streak in Norman in front of over 60,000 stunned fans? Is it because the Irish were the last team to beat OU before the streak started in 1953? Those Sooner fans still around remember the sense of disbelief and utter shock. The Sooners were not supposed to lose, especially in Norman damn Dick Lynch!! The only victory the Sooners have on the Irish is a 45-0 beatdown of Notre Dame in South Bend in 1956 on the way to a national championship. Notre Dame Heisman-winner Paul Hornung had no answer for the Sooners that day. It was the next year after losing to Navy and Michigan State, the Irish made their way to Norman and in a defensive battle scored the lone touchdown on a Dick Lynch run. The Sooners and the Irish met four more time in the 60s: 1961, 1962, 1966 and 1968 - all victories by the Irish. There were two close games and two Irish routs. An average margin of victory in the 60s was 20.25 points in favor of Notre Dame. Famous head coach of the Irish Ara Parseghian led the Irish in the last two victories over the Sooners. The Sooners and the Irish would not meet again until current Sooner head coach Bob Stoops first year in 1999 up in South Bend, a game the Sooners led and should have won. Notre Dame coach Bob Davie was in the middle of a quarterback controversy with Jarious Jackson and Arnaz Battle, but went with Jackson, the lone captain of the team. After the Sooners Brandon Daniels, who had already returned a kickoff back 89 yards for a touchdown, took the opening kick of the second half 68 yards and then caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from then quarterback and now co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel the Sooners led 30-14 with 10:10 left in the third quarter, and the Irish looked finished. The offense continued to stall and the ground attack of the Irish became to much for the Sooners in the second half, and the Irish stormed back for the 34-30 victory making it 8-1 all-time against the Sooners. This was just like every game the Sooners lost that year; they had the lead in every game and in the losses just could not hold on. Now welcome back ESPN College Game Day, and welcome back the Irish to respectability for the first time since 2002. This is a matchup of top 10 teams -- teams poised to make a run to a national title shot. Notre Dame brings in a very big and physical front seven led by a Heisman candidate and team leader both on the field and emotionally, Manti Teo, who is a monster on the field and is gaining ground in the Heisman race. This matchup is one of two teams combined with a total of 15 national championships and 12 Heisman Trophy winners. This is what college football is all about. The last Saturday in October, the two most iconic teams in college football history, with a rich history on their own and against one another, will meet. Now is time for the Sooners to WAKE UP THE ECHOES AND SILENCE THEM!!!! Prediction OU 45-28!
