Volunteers Work With New Coordinator
Altogether, LCS has about 400 volunteers that help it achieve its mission of Sharing Gods Blessings by Helping Others in Need.
Managing that many folks and keeping them happy and busy has always been a tall order. Thats why LCS hired a Volunteer Coordinator earlier this year Cher Frampton. Funding for this part-time position came from Bank of America and Citibank.
Nowadays, when someone volunteers, Cher starts a file on them and interviews them to determine their skills and desires pantry work, office duties, board membership, and so forth. The successes of this new approach are manyfor both LCS and the volunteers. LCS has benefitted by getting new friends, new skills, and expanded services.
In addition to listening to her story and reviewing documents, they spent about 45 minutes working on a balanced budget. She and all of our housing clients are also referred to agencies that provide ongoing financial literacy counseling. Our oldest and strongest relationship in financial literacy is with the YWCA. But we work with many other agencies like
This visitor to St. Stephens food pantry in Wilmington received enough nutritious food for her family to last for three days.
On the other side of the equation, the volunteers benefit too. For some its work experience they seek, but most are looking for a place where they can enjoy the good feelings that come from volunteering.
We are not entirely certain just what is driving the dramatic increase, but we suspect that the weak economy and lack of a strong recovery are the source.
Janis Rose received a financial education session as part of her application for housing assistance.
LCS provides emergency housing help in the form of financial assistance at two locations: Our headquarters at 1304 N. Rodney and the LCS FAITH Center on Walnut Street in Wilmington. The types of assistance offered include help with back rent, mortgage, utilities or security deposits. In this way, we prevent homelessness for about 1250 people each year.
In Wilmington, the states largest city, 28% of the population is below the poverty line. Perhaps what is more important is that 46% of the children in the city of Wilmington are members of impoverished families.
Inevitably poverty results in requests for food assistance. To bring relief, LCS operates 13 food distribution sites statewide, and four within Wilmington.
