Spengler. Spenglers penchant for death had surfaced before. He served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother. But his intent was unmistakable when he left his flaming home carrying a pumpaction shotgun, a .38-caliber revolver and a .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26. He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people, the chief said of a felon who wasnt allowed to possess weapons because of his criminal past. It was not clear how he got them. The assault rifle was believed to be the weapon that struck down the firefighters. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario. Well-wishers console Conn. residents on Christmas

By BroCK VerGAKis and stePHen sinGer the Associated Press NEWTOWN, Conn. This Christmas was unlike any other in Newtown. When a gunman wiped out nearly an entire firstgrade class and killed students and adults in two other first-grade classrooms just 11 days before Christmas, it made it impossible for the holiday to be the same this year. Some residents, like Joanne Brunetti, have found ways to console and help their grieving neighbors. Well-wishers from around the country are stopping by to do the same. Brunetti watched over 26 candles that had been lit at midnight, just before Christmas Day, in honor of those slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She and her husband, Bill, signed up for a three-hour shift and erected a tent to ensure that the candle flames never went out throughout the day. You have to do something and you dont know what to do, you know? You really feel very helpless in this situation, she said Tuesday. People have been wonderful to everybody in Newtown whether you were part of what happened or not. My thought is if we were all this nice to each other all the time maybe things like this wouldnt happen. At a town hall memorial, Faith Leonard waved to people driving by and handed out Christmas cookies, childrens gifts and hugs to anyone who needed it. I guess my thought was if I could be here helping out maybe one person would be able to spend more time with their family or grieve in the way they needed to, said Leonard, who drove to Newtown from Gilbert, Ariz., to volunteer on Christmas morning. I know theyve been inundated with support and thats great, but its always nice to have a present to open on Christmas Day. Julian Revie played Silent Night on a piano on the sidewalk at the downtown memorial. Revie, from Ottawa, Canada, was in the area visiting at the time of the shootings. He canceled his plans to go to Australia, found a piano online and chose to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day playing for the people of Newtown. It was such a mood of respectful silence, said Revie, who planned to leave the piano behind. May 16, 1917-Dec. 25, 2012 Margaret M. Wilson, 95, of Spencerville, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday with her family at her side at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, where she had resided for 10 years. She was born May 16, 1917, in Delphos to Frederick and Mary Jane (Morgan) Krebs, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 9, 1935, she married James A. Wilson, who died April 19, 1958. She is survived by 12 children, Jim (Nancy) Wilson of Tom Ball, Texas, George Chet Wilson of Santa Rosa Calif., Jerry (Marilyn) Wilson of Dennison, Dave (Susie) Wilson of Waynesfield, Joe (Judy) Wilson and Mary Kohli of Lima, Bill (Glenda) Wilson of Cumberland, Ind., Tom (Rita) Wilson of Elida, Chuck (Bonnie) Wilson of Dunkirk, Sandy Dearth of Madison, Wis., Sally Denbow of San Jose, Calif., and Carol Heil of Spencerville; a daughterin-law, Barbara Wilson of Spencerville; 26 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Coralee) Wilson of Van Wert. She was also preceded in death by her sons John Wilson and 4-year-old Paul Richard. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Monticello United Brethren In Christ Church and also attended the First Baptist Church of Spencerville. She had worked at the Woolworth Store in Lima and then became a nurses aide and worked in home health, the Lima T. B. Hospital, Roselawn Manor and Columbia Nursing Homes. She had also worked at the Tomato Cannery in Mandon. She also enjoyed roller skating, dancing and the Charleston, Welsh singing in Gomer where she had lived earlier and breakfast with friends at Jims Restaurant in Delphos. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Monticello United Brethren Church with Pastors Andrew Atkins and Jim Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow south of the church at the New Salem Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville and after 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Monticello or First Baptist Churches.

At St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, attended by eight of the child victims of the massacre, the pastor told parishioners that today is the day we begin everything all over again. Recalling the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, the Rev. Robert Weiss said: The moment the first responder broke through the doors we knew good always overcomes evil. We know Christmas in a way we never ever thought we would know it, he said. We need a little Christmas and weve been given it. Volunteers hung ornaments on a series of memorial Christmas trees Tuesday morning while police officers from around the state took extra shifts to direct traffic, patrol the town and give police here a break. Its a nice thing that they can use us this way, Ted Latiak, a police detective from Greenwich, Conn., said Christmas morning, as he and a fellow detective, each working a half-day shift, came out of a store with bagels and coffee for other officers. The expansive memorials throughout town have become gathering points for residents and visitors alike. A steady stream of residents, some in pajamas, relit candles that had been extinguished in an overnight snowstorm. Others took pictures, dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial in the center of Newtowns Sandy Hook section that is filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards. Snow covered a pile of teddy bears displayed in town. Newtown officials plan to convert the countless mementos paying tribute to the 20 children and six adults into a memorial. Thousands of flowers, letters, signs, photos, candles, teddy bears and other items at sites around town will be turned into soil and blocks to be used in a memorial, The News Times in Danbury reports. The mementos will stay up until after the New Year as residents and visitors pay their respects. Police have yet to offer a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanzas rampage. The 20-year-old Newtown man, who lived at home, killed his mother in her bed before heading to the school and killing 20 children all either 6 or 7 years and six adults. He then killed himself.

Sister Catherine Brickner, CPPS (formerly known as Sister M. Lucina), died Sunday at Emma Hall in the Maria Joseph Living Care Center in Dayton. She had been a Sister of the Precious Blood for 63 years. She was born in Ottoville in 1932, one of 10 children born to John J. and Philomena (Warnecke) Brickner, who preceded her death. Sister Catherine is survived by her sisters, Lauretta Schaffer; Rose (Otto J.) Wenzlick and Carolyn (Gerald P.) Schimmoeller; brothers, Walter J.(Rose Ann) Brickner; Ralph W. (Sharon) Brickner; Steven V. (Sandy) Brickner; and John N. (Joan) Brickner. Preceding her in death were her brother, Clifford A.(Mary) Brickner; and her sister, Doris Ann (Arnold) Ricker. Sister Brickner formally entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood on Aug. 28, 1949, at the age of 17. For 23 years, Sr. Catherine taught grades 1-12 in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Colorado. In 1976, Sister began a new ministry as activity director for the elderly in California and Ohio. In 2001, Sr. Catherine retired at Salem Heights Convent in Dayton. Due to failing health she moved in 2004 to Emma Hall. Jan. 28, 1925-Dec. 22, 2012 Esther K. Pohlman, 87, of Delphos died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at The Meadows of Ottawa-Glandorf. She was born on Jan. 28, 1925, to Joseph Michel and Anna (Birkemeier) Michel, who preceded her in death. She was married to Orville H. Dickman who preceded her in death. She then married Earl Pohlman on Feb. 28, 1976. He survives in Delphos. Survivors also include her children, Denny (MariBeth) Dickman of Van Wert, Byron (Ellen) Dickman of Germany, Glenn (Barb) Dickman of Delphos, Cynthia (Ray Hobbs) Altman of Findlay, Darlene (Paul) Langhals of Cloverdale, Diane Bishop of Ottawa, Deb (Jerry) Dunnigan of Columbus Grove and Marcia (Larry) Klima of Ottawa; two sisters, Julie (Curt) Sheffel of Findlay and Phyllis Riley of Defiance; sisters-in-law, Edna Michel and Ethel Schwinnen of Delphos and Imogene (Bob) Ellerbrock of Ottawa; many nieces and nephews; 18 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren with one very special great-grandchild on the way; and five great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pohlman retired from Phillips in Ottawa where she worked from 1966 to 1988. She took great pride in being an excellent seamstress and gardener. She was a member of the Delphos Eagles 471, Auxiliary Ladies V.F.W. 3035 and Gold Star Mothers. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Delphos. Burial will follow in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Ottawa. COLUMBUS (AP) Strong winds and snowfall that have knocked out power to hundreds of Ohio homes and are disrupting post-holiday travel. Dozens of flights at Ohio airports are expected to be canceled or are delayed. A spokesman said as many as 80 percent of flights out of Cleveland could be canceled by this afternoon. Several western Ohio counties have issued road travel warnings. Parts of Ohio are already under blizzard or winter weather warnings, with freezing rain turning to snow predicted for Wednesday. Its expected to be heaviest in western and northern Ohio. Snow accumulations in Ohio could be up to 10 inches, and temperatures will be noticeably colder the rest of the week. The Ohio Department of Transportation says it pretreated major highways in anticipation of ice and heavy snow.

COLUMBUS (AP) Following the killing of 20 children and six educators in Newtown, Conn., an Ohiobased gun group says it is launching a test program to train teachers how to use firearms. The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Buckeye Firearms Association says it will initially accept applications from 24 teachers for its Armed Teacher Pilot Program. The three-day firearm-training class will be held at the Tactical Defense Institute in West Union. The association will pay for the training, including lodging and ammunition. Association legal chairman Ken Hanson said in a statement that teachers and school board members have been asking us for years for this kind of training. He said the groups long-term goal is to develop a standard curriculum and make the training available to any teacher or school official.

Some urge Boehner: let Dems pass fiscal cliff bill

By CHARLES BABINGTON The Associated Press WASHINGTON In case the public werent frustrated enough over Congress failure to resolve the fiscal cliff, consider this: lawmakers probably could enact a compromise quickly and easily if Republican leaders let Democrats provide most of the votes. That would give Democrats a bigger voice in the bargain, of course, which the Republican-led House is loath to do. Thats why about 10 percent of the Houses members staunch anti-tax conservatives were able to thwart Speaker John Boehners bid to pass a narrowly crafted bill that might have strengthened his bargaining hand. By trying to pass his plan with GOP votes alone, Boehner could afford to lose only two dozen of the 241 House Republicans. His private headcount found nearly twice that many defectors, party insiders say, forcing Boehner to give up without seeking a formal vote. The miscalculation left negotiations in disarray as the Dec. 31 deadline nears. The Houses 192 Democrats essentially sat on the sidelines, bit players in last weeks House drama. Health care tax hikes for 2013 may be just a start

WASHINGTON New taxes are coming Jan. 1 to help finance President Barack Obamas health care overhaul. Most people may not notice. But they will pay attention if Congress decides to start taxing employer-sponsored health insurance, one option in play if lawmakers can ever agree on a budget deal to reduce federal deficits. The tax hikes already on the books, taking effect in 2013, fall mainly on people who make lots of money and on the health care industry. But about half of Americans benefit from the tax-free status of employer health insurance. Workers pay no income or payroll taxes on what their employer contributes for health insurance, and in most cases on their own share of premiums as well. Its the single biggest tax break the government allows, outstripping the mortgage interest deduction, the deduction for charitable giving and other better-known benefits. If the value of jobbased health insurance were taxed like regular income, it would raise nearly $150 billion in 2013, according to congressional estimates. By comparison, wiping away the mortgage interest deduction would bring in only about $90 billion. Next spring will be three years since Congress passed the health care overhaul but, because of a long phase-in, many of the taxes to finance the plan are only now coming into effect. In later negotiations with Boehner, Obama said he could accept a $400,000 threshold if Republicans agreed to other tax and spending provisions.

Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, died in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., while 6-year-old Kammia Perry was slain by her father outside her Cleveland home, according to an Associated Press review of 2012 media reports. Yet there was no gunman on the loose when Julio Segura-McIntosh died in Tacoma, Wash. The 3-yearold accidentally shot himself in the head while playing with a gun he found inside a car. As he mourned with the families of Newtown, President Barack Obama said the nation cannot accept such violent deaths of children as routine. But hundreds of young child deaths by gunfire whether intentional or accidental suggest it might already have. Between 2006 and 2010, 561 children age 12 and under were killed by firearms, according to the FBIs most recent Uniform Crime Reports. The numbers each year are consistent: 120 in 2006; 115 in 2007; 116 in 2008, 114 in 2009 and 96 in 2010. The FBIs count does not include gun-related child deaths that authorities have ruled accidental. This happens on way too regular a basis and it affects families and communities not at once, so we dont see it and we dont understand it as part of our national experience, said Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research. The true number of small children who died by gunfire in 2012 wont be known for a couple of years, when official reports are collected and dumped into a database and analyzed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects to release its 2011 count in the spring. In response to what happened in Newtown, the

The legislation calls it a Medicare contribution, but none of the revenue will go to the Medicare trust fund. Instead, its funneled into the governments general fund, which does pay the lions share of Medicare outpatient and prescription costs, but also covers most other things the government does. The new tax is a 3.8 percent levy on investment income that applies to individuals making more than $200,000 or married couples above $250,000. Projected to raise $123 billion from 2013-2019, it comes on top of other taxes on investment income. While it does apply to profits from home sales, the vast majority of sellers will not have to worry since another law allows individuals to shield up to $250,000 in gains on their home from taxation. (Married couples can exclude up to $500,000 in home sale gains.) Investors have already been taking steps to avoid the tax, selling assets this year before it takes effect. The impact of the investment tax will be compounded if Obama and Republicans cant stave off the automatic tax increases coming next year if theres no budget agreement. National Rifle Association, the nations largest gun lobby, suggested shielding children from gun violence by putting an armed police officer in every school by the time classes resume in January. None of the 61 deaths reviewed by The Associated Press happened at school. Children die by many other methods as well: violent stabbings or throat slashings, drowning, beating and strangulation. But the gruesome recounts of gun deaths, sometimes just a few paragraphs in a newspaper or on a website, a few minutes on television or radio, bear witness that firearms too, are cutting short many youngsters lives.

Lillian Looser of Delphos celebrates her 90th birthday on Dec. 27 with a family celebration. Lillian (Wannemacher) Looser graduated from Ottoville High School. On May 18, 1946 she married William Looser and celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. Lillian is a member of the Delphos Catholic Daughters of America and is a homemaker. She loves to read and spend time with her family. Bill and Lillian have 8 children, 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Wednesday evening and supper is over. Everyone went their own way, some reading, some writing, and some still down with the flu. Yes, the flu bug hit us. So far it has only been son Benjamin and my husband, Joe. Their symptoms were a high temperature, cough, aches and chill. I called the doctor and he said their is not much they can do. So I am playing nurse and trying to keep their temperatures down and trying to keep them comfortable. I hope it stays away from the rest of us. Joe is caught up at work so he is off work until after New Years Day. It was a good thing that he did not have to leave as he woke up with a temperature of 102. I hope he will be better to enjoy his birthday which is Saturday the 22nd. This will make him 44 years

old already. Last night we had an easy supper of eggs, toast and cheese. Verena fried the eggs and Loretta made the toast so I got out of helping with supper. We have eggs, eggs, eggs around here. After the holidays, I hope to make noodles with a lot of them. Elizabeth arrived home safe and sound from their trip to Kentucky. It is always nice to know when everyone is back home again. Christmas is coming up fast and I still have not signed any cards. Seems I get later every year in getting them out. Tomorrow night is the elementary Christmas program at the school. Joseph, Lovina and Kevin are excited about it. Friday will be a halfday of school.

Sounds like we have some snow and wind expected for tonight. There might be a possibility that there will be no school Friday. I remember one year on our way home from the school Christmas program it snowed a lot. It was hard to find our way home with the fresh snow covered roads in the dark. The next morning school was cancelled but the children were disappointed because so were their parties. We were surprised with Christmas carolers one night. Was some of the families from our church. They had a team of horses and a hay wagon to take them from one place to the next. A group of people stood outside on our porch and sang Christmas

carols. This is now Thursday morning and it is raining and very windy. It is the first morning all week that Benjamin woke up without a fever. He said he feels lots better. It is hard to keep him down when he is sick. He had a 104 temperature one morning and was walking around. It doesnt take much of a fever to put me in bed. I just never could walk around with a high temperature. Today I want to bake bread and make something for Elizabeth to take something to the factory for the carry in on her line. Didnt realize I didnt have too much yeast on hand so maybe I wont get to bake as much as I thought. I will close this column wishing you a blessed Christmas. to all the people with illnesses, may you have a complete and speedy recovery. And last, but not least, let us remember the families in Connecticut during this sorrowful time. Such a tragedy. May God be with them. Gods blessings to all.

The Delphos Jefferson Show Choir performed for the Delphos Optimist Clubs breakfast meeting. The performance was part of the Show Choirs tour day. They also sang and danced for the nursing homes, elementary schools, and other venues. Other recent performance have been for the Womens Auxiliary Christmas and Kiwanis Club and a choir concert. The Delphos Optimist Club presented the show choir with a check for $100 to help with expenses of running the program. Show Choir director is Tammy Wirth, who is in her sixth year.

Hunt leads SMU to 43-10 win over Fresno State

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press HONOLULU Margus Hunt knew he had eight hours to fill on the flight over the Pacific Ocean, so he asked the SMU staff to put together film of Fresno State for him to study. He hit the Bulldogs like a tidal wave Monday night in the Hawaii Bowl. The 6-foot-8 defensive end raced around right tackle to blindside Derek Carr and force a fumble. Hunt smashed into running back Robbie Rouse on a delayed handoff and forced another fumble. On a three-man rush, he sacked Carr in the end zone for a safety. It was an inspiring performance by the senior from Estonia, and it set the tone for the Mustangs 43-10 win. That was a lot of fun, Hunt said. We knew from the get-go it was going to be a Monday night football game, the only game in the nation. We wanted to show our skills and make some plays. To me personally ... this is where it all started. Its good to end on this note. The Mustangs (7-6) also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving them eight for the season to tie the NCAA record set last year by Southern Miss. Hayden Greenbauer picked off Carr and returned it 83 yards with 1:14 left, the final blow to a miserable night for the Bulldogs (9-4). SMU had seven sacks, more than double the most Fresno State had given up in a game all year. Garrett Gilbert was effective with his arm and his legs, running for a 17-yard touchdown for the first score of the game and throwing a perfect strike to Darius Johnson for a 21-yard score to answer the Bulldogs only touchdown. He rushed for 98 yards on 18 carries and threw for 212 yards. But this game was decided by the Mustangs defense, with Hunt leading the way. He was voted the games MVP. We tried some slide protections to 92 (Hunt). You know, they beat us, Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter said. We tried going empty to spread things out and get it out quick, we tried to max protect. Everything we tried didnt work. Fresno State, the Mountain West Conference champion, has lost its last four bowl games. SMU, which went 25 years without a bowl after its NCAA death penalty, now has played in a school-record four straight bowls, winning three of them. Hunt was a mystery when that run started in 2009, a gold medalist in the shot put and discus in Beijing at the 2006 Junior World Championships who came to SMU for track and field and turned to football when it was his only hope of scholarship money. SMU coach June Jones has a knack for taking a chance on athletes from other sports, and he liked what he saw, from the 82-inch wing span to the 4.7 speed in the 40. Its not hard for me to see a world-class athlete who can run like that, has strength like that, has an arm length like that, Jones said. The first scrimmage we had ... the only thing I didnt know was if he was going to be tough enough. The first play we ran a trap and hit him real hard, and he wanted to fight. I said, OK, we may have a player here. His best football is ahead of him, Jones said. I was really excited, on a national stage, for him to have that kind of a game. The Bulldogs turned in a dud. Fresno State, which had averaged just over 47 points in its last five games, was shut out in the first half for the first time in two years. Carr was too busy running for his life to get the Bulldogs into any kind of offensive rhythm. And when the Bulldogs finally scored with 10:21 left in the third quarter, Gilbert led the Mustangs on a 75-yard drive that he finished with a pinpoint pass to Johnson in the corner for a touchdown. That drive there put the game away in essence, Gilbert said. For us to respond like that and put six points on that board was big. It allowed Jones to walk out of Aloha Stadium with yet another win. He was the coach at Hawaii for eight years, leaving after its unbeaten regular season in 2007. Jones now

has won 10 straight games in Aloha Stadium, dating to a December 2006 loss to Oregon State. I just want to say Aloha to the seniors, Jones said during the trophy presentation. We said we were going to do it and we did it. Without hardly breaking a sweat. The 10 points matched the fewest Fresno State has scored this year, dating to its 20-10 loss to Boise State. Carr was 33-of-54 passing for 362 yards, but most of that came late in the game when the Bulldogs were trying to catch up. He was overwhelmed by the Mustangs defensive front, particularly Hunt, who had two sacks, two forced fumbles and three tackles behind the line of scrimmage. When you go three-andout, it feels like theres no rhythm at all, Carr said. After a dull, scoreless opening quarter, Gilbert shook off one tackle and scored on a 17-yard run. The defense took over from there. Hunt blew past right tackle Alex Fifita and blindsided Carr, dropping him flat as the ball came loose and was scooped up by Aaron Davis, who returned it 23 yards to the Fresno State 16 until he fumbled it out of bounds. SMU had to settle for a field goal. On the next series, Carr scrambled backward and couldnt escape an 18-yard sack to the 6, and then Hunt sacked him in the end zone for a safety.

Browns Richardson, Weeden questionable

BEREA Though two of his star players got hurt, Browns coach Pat Shurmur defended playing his regulars late in a blowout loss in Denver. Shurmur said he was just trying to win when prized rookies Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden were injured in the second half of the 34-12 loss. What do we do, just stop playing? Shurmur said Monday. So you just run the ball and get out of there, warm up the buses? Is that what? Were trying to do what we can to move the football. At that time it was a three-score game. Typically that means throw it. Facing a defense that knew he had to pass, backup Colt McCoy was sacked four times during his brief relief appearance for Weeden. I was just trying to not get knocked out, said McCoy, whose 2011 season ended when he sustained a concussion in Pittsburgh. He hadnt thrown a pass since then in a regular-season game until a wobbly Weeden went out Sunday. We were pretty far behind at that point when I got in, so I assumed we would start throwing, McCoy said. It took a couple series getting used to the pocket hadnt had any reps, hadnt sat back there in a while so getting a feel for how those guys were playing, I maybe missed a couple throws early. A couple times I just threw the ball in the dirt to let those guys (teammates) rest. We were throwing the ball down the field and those guys were tired. Shurmur said he was unaware of McCoys comments. He did know about kick returner Josh Cribbs profane postgame tweet to fans and did not approve. Thats not acceptable, Shurmur said. I dont like that and he shouldnt do that. I think hes remorseful. But he shouldnt be reading tweets after a game. Emotions are raw when you dont win. It is important we use good judgment. Bitter fans have questioned Shurmurs decisions all year. Their latest outburst came after Weeden was hurt on a thirdquarter sack and Richardson went down when McCoy rolled up on the back of his leg after being hit on Clevelands second-to-last offensive play. We dont want to get anybody hurt, Shurmur. Anybody on the field is exposed to injury. Shurmur remains hopeful Weeden and Richardson can play in Pittsburgh on Sunday. I wouldnt rule them out yet, he said. Were still evaluating those injuries. In the case of Trent, it involved his ankle. The X-rays didnt show a break. He was actually feeling better today. Brandon, it was his right shoulder. At this point its a sprain. I think its important if guys are physically able to play, they play. Thats the competitive nature of this game. Richardson has set Browns rookie rushing records of 950 yards and 11 touchdowns. Though Weeden has 17 interceptions to 14 touchdown passes, his 3,385 yards are 10th in team history. Bengals have nothing at stake in final game

By JOE KAY The Associated Press CINCINNATI With their playoff seeding locked in place, the Bengals have the option of taking it easy with some of their players in the final regular-season game. Theyve done it before, and it hasnt turned out so well. The Bengals (9-6) havent won a playoff game since 1990, going 0-3 in the postseason under coach Marvin Lewis. He wouldnt talk in any detail Monday about his plans for their concluding game against Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium, other than to say hes learned from those playoff losses. In 2009, Cincinnati had clinched the AFC North title before the final game on the road against the Jets. He rested starters during a 37-0 loss to New York. One week later, the Jets came to Cincinnati and won 24-14. The starters were rested, but their momentum was gone. Howd that work out for us? Lewis said on Monday. I dont really have any beat-up guys. So, the only thing that is at stake is you go out and play to win the game every time we go. Thats important. A 13-10 victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday clinched the final AFC wild-card spot. Baltimore (10-5) won the AFC North later in the day by beating the Giants. The Bengals are locked in as the sixth seed, so theyll be on the road for every game in the playoffs. Their destination will be decided by how the final weekend plays out. The Patriots currently are the No. 3 seed, which would put the Bengals in line for a first-round game at New England. If the Ravens beat the Bengals on Sunday and New England loses at home to Miami, Baltimore would move into the third seed and host Cincinnati in the first round. Theres also a chance the Bengals could open at Houston where they lost 31-10 in a first-round game last season or at Denver. The Broncos beat the Bengals 31-23 at Paul Brown Stadium on Nov. 4. There are so many possibilities that the Bengals arent paying much attention. Lewis is trying to get them focused on something else this week: evening up things with the rival that made them look bad at the start of the season. The Bengals opened in Baltimore on Monday night and lost 44-13, one of the worst season-opening drubbings in franchise history. We didnt kick the season off very good, and now we get to finish it at home, Lewis said. We dont know who we will play (in the playoffs) or where. We just have to take it on ourselves. More in focus, though, is the Baltimore Ravens. They are a good team that just won our division and a team that beat the snot out of us in the first game. The Bengals finish at home against the Ravens for the second straight season. Last year, Baltimore came to town and clinched its first division title since 2006 with a 24-16 victory. The Bengals got a wild card when the Jets and Broncos also lost their final games. Its only the second time in franchise history the Bengals are going to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. They also did it in 1981 when they reached their first Super Bowl and in the strikeshortened 1982 season.

The win at Pittsburgh on Sunday had special significance. Cincinnati hadnt beaten the Ravens or Steelers in the last two seasons, going 0-6 against its biggest rivals. Thats a huge win for us because people were doubting us, defensive tackle Domata Peko said on Monday. Even though the Bengals cant improve their playoff position, they can add to their momentum. Last season, dropped three of their last five games, then lost to Houston in the first round. The win in Pittsburgh was Cincinnatis sixth in the last seven games. Although the offense has struggled lately, the defense has held opponents to 13 or fewer points six times during that seven-game stretch. In December last year, we were kind of (leveled) off a little bit, Peko said. This year we started slower, but now were starting to take off. Those are the teams that are dangerous.

James leads Heat over Thunder in Finals rematch

By TIM REYNOLDS The Associated Press MIAMI Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined to score 54 points, more than any set of teammates had managed in a game against Miami all season. Oklahoma City needed them to score at least three more. That didnt happen, and an NBA Finals rematch went just as last years title series did to the Heat. LeBron James had 29 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 21, and the Heat survived a frantic finish to beat the Thunder 103-97 on Tuesday night, a game where Durant and Westbrook both missed potential tying 3-pointers in the final seconds. A great game to play, Thunder coach Scott Brooks said, and a great game to coach. For the Heat, it was just a little greater. Mario Chalmers scored a season-high 20 for the Heat, who were 19 for 19 from the foul line, the second-best effort in franchise history behind only a 30-for-30 game in Boston on March 24, 1993. Chris Bosh added 16 points for Miami, which has beaten the Thunder five straight times dating to last Junes title series. Felt a little bit like a different month, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Regardless of what your script is coming into the game, when you play this team, its not going to go according to script. Theyre too good. Its the first losing streak of the season for the Thunder, who had been 4-0 after losses. Serge Ibaka and Kevin Martin each scored 15 for Oklahoma City. The game had a little of everything a fast start by the reigning champions, a onehanded dunk by James on an offensive rebound that will be added to his copious highlight reel, a scrum after a hard foul that led to double-technicals on Wade and Ibaka early in the fourth, an easy rally by the Thunder from an early doubledigit deficit, and even workout partners in Durant and James barking back and forth in the final minutes. Such was the intensity that James slumped over the scorers table with 1:08 left, exhausted. Im tired as hell right now, James said and that was more than an hour after the game ended. With good reason. On an emotional day, there was a wild finish. Wade lost the ball on an ill-advised, behind-the-back dribble, and the turnover set up Durant for a two-handed dunk that got the Thunder within 96-95 with 44.1 seconds remaining. Needing a stop on the next trip, the Thunder instead forgot to play defense. Kendrick Perkins and Ibaka both were confused on the ensuing Miami possession, and Bosh was left alone to take a pass from James and throw down a dunk that restored Miamis three-point edge. We went over and helped, Durant said. We just needed to help on the backside. There was miscommunication but we still had a chance to go into overtime. Two chances, actually. Oklahoma City got within one when Durant made a jumper over James, but no closer. Ray Allens two free throws with 15.6 seconds left made it 100-97, and Miamis last three points came from the line. Durant missed a 3-pointer that James contested, Westbrook wound up with a second chance that Wade defended, and the Thunder guard smacked a nearby table arguing that he was fouled. Part of the game, Westbrook said. While the stars were stars, the Heat got help from one unexpected source. Chalmers was making everything, even unintended plays. Allen lost possession on what looked to be a pass to no one, but Chalmers picked up the bouncing ball on the right wing, whirled and made a 3-pointer putting Miami up 86-79 with 8:14 left. In the end, that cushion was necessary. I got going early, Chalmers said, and I stuck with it. The Heat came out flying, opening a quick 13-2 lead after making six of their first seven shots. About all that didnt go right for the Heat early on was James committing a foul, the first time he was called for a personal since Dec. 8. It happened 4:03 into the game 254 minutes and 7 seconds of on-court time since his last one when James fouled Ibaka on a dunk attempt. Chalmers had 12 points, matching his season high, in the opening quarter alone, and that was also Miamis lead after his layup for a 15-3 edge. When Durant headed to the bench after being called for his second personal, plus a technical, with 2:08 left in the first, the Heat led 27-16. But even with Durant out, Oklahoma City scored the last eight points of the quarter, six coming from the line. The Thunder shot 17 of the games first 18 free throws and finished with a 38-19 edge in tries from the stripe. The Heat were held to two points in the first 5:05 of the third, and the Thunder grabbed the lead for the first time. Durant connected on a baseline jumper while falling out of bounds and getting fouled by James. The resulting free throw gave Oklahoma City a 58-56 edge.

Lakers 100, Knicks 94 LOS ANGELES Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, helping Los Angeles beat New York and extend its winning streak to five. Bryant scored 34 points in his NBArecord 15th Christmas Day game, and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Bryant, the leagues leading scorer, has topped 30 in nine straight games. The Lakers improved to 14-14 9-9 under new coach Mike DAntoni and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. The Associated Press BASEBALL HOUSTON Brad Corbett, who owned the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1980 and wasnt afraid to regularly switch out managers, died on Christmas Eve. He was 75. Corbetts daughter, Pamela Corbett Murrin, told The Associated Press that her father died peacefully in his sleep on Monday. She said he had not been sick recently. Under Corbett, the team had six managers in six years four in the 1977 season alone. Rangers website said the team had its first four winning seasons under Corbett and finished second in the AL West three times. The 94 wins in 1977 remained the most in team history until 1999. By DANIEL WAGNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON U.S. holiday retail sales this year grew at the weakest pace since 2008, when the nation was in a deep recession. In 2012, the shopping season was disrupted by bad weather and consumers rising uncertainty about the economy. A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said Tuesday that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent, compared with last year. Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 percent. In 2008, sales declined by between 2 percent and 4 percent as the financial crisis that crested that fall dragged the economy into recession. Last year, by contrast, retail sales in November and December rose between 4 percent and 5 percent, according to ShopperTrak, a separate market research firm. A 4 percent increase is considered a healthy season. Shoppers were buffeted this year by a string of events that made them less likely to spend: Superstorm Sandy and other bad weather, the distraction of the presidential election and grief about the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn. The numbers also show how Washingtons current budget impasse is trickling down to Main Street and unsettling consumers. If Americans remain reluctant to spend, analysts say, economic growth could falter next year. In the end, even steep last-minute discounts werent enough to get people into stores, said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc. DEAR BRUCE: My husband is 73, and Im 65. We have two condominiums -- one in Pennsylvania, where we owe a little over $100,000, and one in Clearwater, Fla., with a mortgage of $44,000. We have sufficient income currently to pay the mortgages, but its a strain. We have $125,000 in IRA savings. We lost more than $200,000 in the stock market, and we took out most of our money. Now we are risk-o-phobic. The financial adviser at our bank wants to sell us an annuity. We dont think thats appropriate. We also took out a $100,000 life policy. Apparently it is a term life insurance policy, and now the payments are increasing to $713 a month, so we had to cancel. Now that 50 percent of our savings are gone, we are very unhappy with our broker and we, of course, got rid of him. We are having a hard time deciding if we should sell either condo. We love going to Florida in the winter and feel its good for our health. Our family lives in Pennsylvania. My husband wants to pay off the first mortgage on our condo in Pennsylvania with our savings, making it easier for us financially, especially since we dont have the life insurance. Hes worried that if something were to happen to him before me, which is likely, that I would have an especially hard time financially. What do you suggest? We are desperate. -- J.C. in Pennsylvania DEAR J.C.: The most foolish thing youve done, in my opinion, is to panic when part of your savings disappeared in the stock market crunch. Had you hung on and not sold, you would have recovered most of the losses and perhaps even gained some profit. This is what most amateurs do, and its just not the way to go. I understand that youd like to maintain your two properties, but I dont think thats a smart thing to do. I dont believe you can afford both condos. Despite the fact that your family is in Pennsylvania, I would keep the $44,000 debt rather than the $100,000 debt and think seriously of moving to Florida on a permanent basis. For the difference, you could go back and forth when airfares are on sale and be way ahead of the game. Im sure your family would love to come to Florida to visit you. DEAR BRUCE: I think you are the greatest, and you give the best advice! I read your column faithfully and listen to your show via the Internet. I have a question. I am going to be 60 next year and am still working. My only debt is a mortgage that amounts to about half of my monthly income. Holiday sales are a crucial indicator of the economys strength. November and December account for up to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers. If those sales dont materialize, stores are forced to offer steeper discounts. Thats a boon for shoppers, but it cuts into stores profits. Last-minute shoppers like Kris Betzold, of Carmel, Ind., embraced discounts that were available before Christmas. We went out yesterday, and I noticed that the sales were even better now than they were at Thanksgiving, said Betzold Monday while shopping at an upscale mall in Indianapolis. Betzold, who said the sluggish economy prompted her and her husband to be more frugal this year, noted that she saved about $25 on a Kindle Fire she found at Best Buy. Spending by consumers accounts for 70 percent of overall economic activity, so the eight-week period encompassed by the SpendingPulse data is seen as a critical time not just for retailers but for manufacturers, wholesalers and companies at every other point along the supply chain. The SpendingPulse data include sales by retailers in key holiday spending categories such as electronics, clothing, jewelry, luxury goods, furniture and other home goods between Oct. 28 and Dec. 24. They include sales across all payment methods, including cards, cash and checks. Its the first major snapshot of retail sales during the holiday season through Christmas Eve. A clearer picture will emerge next week as retailers like Macys and Target report revenue from stores open for at least a year. That sales measure is widely watched in the retail industry because it excludes revenue from stores that recently opened or closed, which can be volatile.

You dont have to act hastily, but I would clean up the house, paint it, etc., and put it on the market. You should be able to rent a much smaller place that is less of a financial drain and much less responsibility. Understand that you may have to take less for your house than you would like. But your current staggering monthly payments, in my view, are absolutely not supportable. Your $300,000 equity should be invested, in my opinion, not in an insured account but rather a conservative market investment. This should produce a reasonable amount of income. As a youngster, she sang in a church choir, and when she turned 18, she traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., to pursue a musical career. DEAR DOCTOR K: I have trigeminal neuralgia. Medications havent helped. What are my other treatment options? DEAR READER: Trigeminal neuralgia causes pain in the face. The pain can be so bad that it disrupts a persons life. You have two trigeminal nerves, one on each side of your face. These nerves detect touch, pain, temperature and pressure. If you pinch your lip, trigeminal nerve endings in your lips send pain signals up the nerve and into your brain, where the pain registers. In trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve starts to malfunction, registering pain when theres no apparent reason for it. People suddenly have intense, stabbing or electrical shock-like facial pain. The pain can be excruciating and can occur anywhere between the jaw and forehead. The painful symptoms come and go. You may experience repeated painful episodes over days, weeks or months. Then you may enjoy a pain-free stretch of months or years. But then it returns, and you feel betrayed: You thought you were rid of it. You live with the knowledge that it might come back, so even if you are free from pain you are not free from apprehension. The irritation in a trigeminal nerve is usually near the nerves origin, deep within the skull. In most cases, an abnormal blood vessel pressing on the nerve causes the irritation. Occasionally, multiple sclerosis can lead to trigeminal neuralgia. In some cases, we just dont know the cause. Treatment usually begins with the anticonvulsant medication carbamazepine (Tegretol, others). This drug decreases the ability of the trigeminal nerve to fire off the nerve impulses that cause facial pain. If carbamazepine doesnt help, another anticonvulsant medication may be more effective for you. A muscle relaxant, either alone or in combination with an anticonvulsant, can also help.

If youve tried the medicines Ive mentioned, then there are other types of treatment to discuss with your doctor: -- Rhizolysis. Part of the trigeminal nerve is temporarily inactivated. This may be done using a heated probe, an injection of glycerol, or a tiny balloon inflated near the nerve to compress it. Rhizolysis provides immediate relief for most people, but it doesnt prevent the condition from returning in the future. -- Stereotactic radiosurgery. This is a form of radiation therapy in which tiny beams of radiation are used to inactivate part of the trigeminal nerve. This is a newer treatment option, and its longterm success rate is not known. -Microvascular decompression. In this delicate surgical procedure, a surgeon opens your skull and repositions the blood vessel that is pressing on your trigeminal nerve. The procedure has a high success rate, and most patients gain longterm relief. It has been a really important advance. I use two humidifiers in my house, fabric softener liquid in my wash and fabric softener sheets in my dryer, and still my clothes are full of static! Any more ideas? -- Carolyn, email Dear Carolyn: Try vinegar as your fabric softener and a ball of foil or a few safety pins attached to a sock or washcloth in your dryer. Avoid mixing synthetic garments with natural fabrics in the dryer. You can pull your clothing out of the dryer before its completely dry, or dry on a lower setting and add a damp wash cloth toward the end of the drying time. You can give them a quick snap as you pull them out of the dryer. Lightly spray static guard on them, apply lotion to your skin prior to wearing the items or run a wire hanger or dryer sheet over the garments when wearing them.
