Jeffrey Sinclair, fired from his command in Afghanistan last May and now facing a court-martial on charges of sodomy, adultery and pornography and more, is just one in a long line of commanders whose careers were ended because of possible sexual misconduct. Sex has proved to be the downfall of presidents, members of Congress and other notables. Its also among the chief reasons that senior military officers are fired. At least 30 percent of military commanders fired over the past eight years lost their jobs because of sexually related offenses, including harassment, adultery, and improper relationships, according to statistics compiled by The Associated Press. The statistics from all four military services show that adulterous affairs are more than a four-star foible. From sexual assault and harassment to pornography, drugs and drinking, ethical lapses are an escalating problem for the militarys leaders. With all those offenses taken together, more than 4 in every 10 commanders at the rank of lieutenant colonel or above who were fired fell as a result of behavioral stumbles since 2005. Eighteen generals and admirals, from one star to four stars, were fired in recent years, and 10 of them lost their jobs because of sex-related offenses; two others were done in by alcohol-related problems. The figures show that 255 commanders were fired since 2005, and that 78 of them were felled by sex-related offenses. A breakdown: 32 in the Army, 25 in the Navy, 11 in the Marine Corps and 10 in the Air Force. Anu Bhagwati, executive director of the Service Womens Action Network, said there is more focus on this issue now than ever in the past, but that there really is no sufficient deterrent in place. She said a major problem is that military commanders are responsible for deciding what cases should move forward. She said military lawyers, who are trained and have a greater appearance of impartiality, should make such an important legal decision. The statistics gathered and analyzed by the AP represent a very conservative estimate of the problem. While the Army, Navy and Marine Corps provided details for all military commanders who were lieutenant colonels or commanders and above for 2005 until now, Air Force officials said they could only provide data for colonels and above from 2008 until today.

Also, the figures reflect only officers who were in command positions. The numbers dont include what could be hundreds of officers fired from other jobs, such as administrative or other military posts. Military officials said they only collect data on officers in command who are fired. The Army is the largest of the military services, reaching a peak of about 570,000 active duty soldiers at the height of the Iraq war. It is supposed to cut 80,000 troops by 2017. The Marine Corps is the smallest service, with about 202,000 at its peak during the wars and is set to slim down to about 182,000. The Navy has about 322,000 active duty forces and the Air Force has about 328,000.

23.01.2013 Polskie Radio S.A UPDATED - Captain Krzysztof Woniak was killed during an anti-terrorist action last night in the eastern Ghazni province in Afghanistan. Captain Woniak is the first Polish commando to die in action during a foreign mission. The 36 year-old met his death as insurgents opened fire during an operation involving commandos from the Polish GROM special services, Colonel Miroslaw Ochyra, a spokesman for the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command has told Polish Radio. Krzysztof Woniak was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, where Poland currently has over 2,000 troops stationed, and has left a wife and three children. Thirty five Polish troops, including a medic, have been killed in action in Afghanistan, with at least 100 soldiers wounded. (pg)

UPDATE Captain Wozniak, who was a member of the special forces GROM unit, it has been confirmed, had served in the Polish armed forces for 17 years. A number of troops were also injured by incoming fire from insurgents, who were taken to a field hospital for treatment.

01/23/2013 By Glen Ford, Executive Editor, Black Agenda Report [Excerpts] Like an abusive spouse who preys on the emotional desperation and dependency of his domestic victim, Barack Obama knows that all he need do is offer some cheap street corner flowers and a few sweet words, and the previous nights and months and years of beatings will be forgiven. Just hum a bar or two of an old, shared song, and the battered partner will supply a full symphony of Barry Whites Love Unlimited Orchestra because she needs to hear it, if only inside her own head.

After four years of chasing Republican skirts in search of a grand austerity bargain; of debauching himself in marathon binges of global lawlessness and aggressive war; of defiling the Bill of Rights through preventive detention and massive domestic spying; of callous neglect of the jobs and lost wealth crisis afflicting the most loyal members of his political family; and of brazen cavorting with the vile and filthy rich, sheltering them from incarceration for crimes against the national and global economy, Barack Obama slunk home on the morning of January 21, to be smothered with kisses. Much of what passes for the Left, and for traditional African American leadership, agreed with the New York Times assessment that Barack Obamas second inaugural address represented a firm embrace of a progressive agenda centered on equality and opportunity. Significantly, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell echoed the sentiment: The era of liberalism is backthe speech certainly brings back memories of the Democratic Party in ages past. It is in the mutual interest of corporate media and rightwing Republicans to move the bar of progressive politics ever rightward. However, for African Americans and white progressives, it amounts to erasing their own political legacies from history. Actuality, Obama embraced nothing: he merely peppered the speech with progressive buzzwords and references just enough notes to get the faithful to fill in the empty spaces with their own internal music. It was classic Obama. A decade of war is now ending, said the Second Incarnation of Obama, sounding a false peace note. If he was talking about Afghanistan, thats a damnable lie. There is no agreement to end U.S. combat involvement in Afghanistan, and no intention of achieving one only the stated goal to lower troop levels. The Pentagon is fielding contingencies to reduce U.S. troop strength to between 6,000 and 20,000. (When Obama entered office there were 30,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, which he raised to about 100,000 in the surge of 2011.) Although the administration line is that most of the remaining Americans will be trainers, they will include thousands of Special Forces troops to continue counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations. Special Forces are trainers and force multipliers by U.S. military definition, training native troops while engaged in combat missions. U.S. air forces, drone and manned, will continue to pound targets.

Obamas nearly completed codification of U.S. drone policies exempts the CIA from any clear rules for targeted-killing drone operations in neighboring Pakistan for at least a year, to allow them to do as much damage as possible in the quest for Obamas version of peace. But history may record Obamas greatest crime against peace as changing the definition of war. According to his unique doctrine, the U.S. cannot be in a state of war, or even hostilities with another people or country, unless Americans are killed in the process. Thus, Obama refused to report to the U.S. Congress under the War Powers Act following eight months of bombardment of Libya, claiming no state of war had existed since no Americans had died. By this logic, the U.S. is empowered to bomb anyone, anywhere on the planet at will, without the constraints of national or international law, as long as care is taken to protect the lives of U.S. personnel. Obama rhetorically abolishes war while promulgating a doctrine of general immunity from the rules of war. What, then, is the presidents meaning when he tells hundreds of thousands on the National Mall that enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war? This, from a man who makes war on language itself.

This Administrations Jobs Policy, Like The Republicans, Consists Almost Entirely Of Tax Incentives To Business: Trickle Down
An economic recovery has begun, said Obama. Not for Blacks, whose official 14 percent unemployment rate is more than twice that of whites (6.9 percent), and whose median household wealth has fallen to one-twentieth that of white families a catastrophe of historical proportions. The recovery is mainly confined to Wall Street, which is awash in cash, thanks to more than four years of free money (for banks, only). This administrations jobs policy, like the Republicans, consists almost entirely of tax incentives to business: trickle down. The One Percents rising tide has lifted only their yachts. Obama admits that a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it, but has done nothing to curtail the hegemony of Wall Street, the mighty engine of economic inequality. Quite the opposite. His Justice Department has granted blanket immunities from prosecution in both Scandals of the Century the LIBOR interest rate rigging scheme and mortgage robosigning letting the mega-crooks off with fines.

Nevertheless, liberals were heartened when Obama fixed his lips to say the free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play as if there were even a hint of substance in the verbal exercise. As much as 80 percent of the public supports Social Security and Medicare, including the entirety of the presidents Democratic base. Yet, it was Barack Obama who began the current austerity offensive in the weeks before delivering his first inaugural address, informing the New York Times and Washington Post editorial boards that all entitlements would be on the table for chopping during his administration. Only last month, he offered to alter the way Social Security benefits are calculated as an opener to negotiations. Obama has shown, by word and deed, that he poses the greatest threat to Social Security in its history far greater than George W. Bush, whose assault on the New Deal program met ferocious Democratic resistance. Obama will carry much of the Party with him which is why we at Black Agenda Report call the First Black President the more effective evil. So, when Obama uses a ceremonial occasion to declare that: The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us and a great nation must care for the vulnerable, and protect its people from lifes worst hazards and misfortune, it is only cheap rhetoric, signifying nothing. Obama claims he wants to reform entitlements in order to strengthen them which is precisely the Republican line. By cheering the inaugural speech, progressives are only encouraging Obamas gaming and mendacity. And so it goes. The Great Deporter becomes the great protector of immigrant rights. The man who killed the Kyoto Agreement is heralded as a champion of the environment because he expresses respect for science and pledges to somehow respond to the threat of climate change. The mention of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s name signifieswhat? Nowadays, not a thing. It is true: Obama is the most gay-friendly president to date. I dont think U.S. imperialism and Wall Street hegemons have a fundamental problem with that, either. Apparently, being gay-friendly is all it takes to be considered a champion of a progressive agenda in 2013.

All the Iraqi people now rebel against Al-Maliki and his government. They tell him: take your things and leave! No Iraqi citizen will ever be sorry if this government leaves. If you dont listen to us, your inevitable destiny will await you. Of course you have already seen the fate of other tyrants who left before you, and youll regret it if you want to continue your tyranny. At the capitol in Lansing, Michigan the day Right To Work For Less was signed into law, thousands of union staffers working on the clock, and local union officers collecting lost time wage reimbursements chanted, Veto! Veto!

As if the governor who invented the Emergency Manager law to overthrow democratically elected city councils and revoke labor contracts would decide that Right to Work For Less wasnt fair. They may as well have waved feathers at birds and blown smoke rings at clouds. Laid off construction workers in hard hats milled on the capitol lawn like cattle agitated by the smell of blood. Theyd already felt the prod of too few jobs and nonunion wages. Retirees like myself flocked from all over the state scared shitless by the realization: we arent safe, were next. We know we are only as secure as the members we left behind on the front lines of the class war.

UAW Officers Are Hovering Near The Exit Signs Like Shoplifters With Shifty Eyes, Weak Alibis, And Pockets Full Of Hot Merchandise.
Bob King, the president of the UAW, told Crains Automotive News that Right To Work For Less was not a threat to the UAW because his members are loyal to the union. The lackeys he appointed are loyal to the King and, yes sir, thats all he hears. The rumble from the shop floor doesnt penetrate his royal ears. I wonder when King last walked the floor of an auto plant where new hires dont have to wait for Right To Work For Less to (1) cut their wages (2) deprive them of a pension (3) eliminate overtime pay with alternative work schedules that erase weekends and instigate sleep deprivation (4) enforce work rules that double down on repetitive stress (5) set break time shorter than a cops warning (6) inform workers who demand a grievance, Youre lucky to have a job. When was the last time King Bob had less than ten minutes to eat, drink, and ease the aches before he had to get back to bend-lift-twist-and-crank fifty-seven seconds out of every micromonitored minute? Theres a whole generation of workers whove already been there (a workplace ruled by tyrants) and done that (gave up on a union that enforces company policy) and they, not the bureaucrats and their academic sidekicks, are the building blocks of the new labor movement. Ready or not, two tier is stalking the house of labor and UAW officers are hovering near the exit signs like shoplifters with shifty eyes, weak alibis, and pockets full of hot merchandise. Hell, everything we are supposed to fear from Right To Work For Less has been a UAW program since the International embraced the corporate agenda competition between workers and cooperation with bosses thirty years ago.

Bob King told Crains Automotive News that 90 percent of UAW-represented autoworkers in right-to-work states have chosen to stay in the union. Im not a statistician but I do know my autoworkers and I do check my sources. Its true. At factories in Right To Work For Less states where the majority of UAW members transferred from plants up north with the golden handcuffs of top tier wages and pensions very few workers pull their cards. Even in Shreveport, Louisiana where there was a higher percentage of local workers hired than at most of GMs southern plants most workers stayed with the UAW. Kevin Grace who retired from the GM Shreveport plant did choose to leave the UAW. Grace left largely for political reasons. He identifies himself as a Libertarian. Grace didnt suffer any repercussions. Federal law requires nonunion members to have the same level of representation as union members. Though many people agreed with Grace and admired his stand, very few according to him chose to withdraw from the UAW. Most people dont like not belonging to a club, Grace said. They dont believe in getting something for nothing. So they stay even if they dont agree with the politics.

The Way They See It, The Company And The Union Both Are Responsible For Their Second Class Status
But at the Freightliner plant in Cleveland, North Carolina where the International UAW supported the company when Freightliner fired the bargaining committee, and subsequent contracts dealt management a handful of aces, its another story. Franklin Torrence, a former union officer at Freightliner, told me that membership varies from 65 percent to 75 percent. The number shifts Torrence said. It increases before contract negotiations and then decreases when members are dissatisfied. After an election the losing faction pull their cards. If a worker isnt satisfied with the way a grievance is handled, he withdraws from the union and files a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. The NLRB is more likely to help a nonunion worker who claims discrimination and who isnt obligated to exhaust internal union remedies. Sometimes, its just the money. Prior to a bonus, members who want to save on dues cancel their membership. Second tier workers may begrudge every bite out of a check that wont stretch from payday to payday. Whos to blame for their resentment? The way they see it, the company and the union both are responsible for their second class status. Theres only one way to overcome anti-union laws and belligerent bosses. Everyone knows what it is and the class of people who live off unearned income do everything in their power to decimate it. Panic pushers insist there is a conspiracy to disarm American citizens. While we oil our rifles and finger our bullets like worry beads, thieves disguised in suits and ties disable

our earning power, devalue our homes, destroy our unions, and transfer the accumulated wealth of our labor overseas. Indeed there is a conspiracy, and the warning reverberates like a diddley bow strung between unemployment and debt, illness and bankruptcy, the prison and the mission. Americans arent controlled by automatic weapons and tanks. We are controlled by fear, by clamors of fiscal cliff echoing like foghorns in our sleep. We react like dogs barking furiously to defend the patch of dirt were chained to. The kettle of vultures that advocate a bunker mentality raze, ridicule, and undermine the only genuine security humans have ever known community, fellowship, solidarity.

In A Capitalist Country The Matrimony Of Labor And Management Is Blessed And The Dowry Is Filed As A Tax Deductible Business Expense
We really have our work cut out for us. Its tempting to express anger against a company dominated union by not paying dues. One might hope withholding dues would make the office rats accountable. Such reasoning overestimates their work ethic and underestimates the lucrative flow of kickbacks legally defined as joint funds. It pays to sleep with the boss. In a capitalist country the matrimony of labor and management is blessed and the dowry is filed as a tax deductible business expense. Bob King in an editorial titled The Lesson of Freightliner declared that success comes from strong partnerships between labor and management. If Kings message sounds like Right To Work For Less sweet-talk, thats because it comes from the same playbook. King, the son of a Ford industrial relations director, didnt mention that in 2007 the International UAW aided and abetted Freightliner in securing the termination of local union officers for calling a strike in response to managements declaration that there would be no contract extension. As a result the Good Friday holiday was cancelled and workers were required to work for straight time. Every union person worth the steel in the toes of their boots knows that you dont work without a contract. Hell, even CEOs wont work without a contract. Try telling a supplier that the contract is canceled and see how many parts you get on Monday. Any self respecting bargaining committee would call for a strike. In arbitration hearings International UAW officers under the leadership of UAW Vice President General Holifield testified as witnesses for the company.

Now retired International UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and Nate Gooden, an International UAW Vice President now deceased, had made a secret agreement with the corporation prior to local negotiations. Freightliner acted on good faith that the game was rigged. The bet paid off. Five local union officers were terminated. Two survived the lynching. Franklin Torrence is one of two local union officers who retained their jobs through arbitration. Three of the original Freightliner Five were fired. In light of this betrayal by the International UAW I asked Brother Franklin why he continued to be a member of the UAW and pay dues in a Right To Work For Less state. I take the good along with the bad because I believe in the labor movement, Torrence said. If faith is the sword which cleaves the wheat from the chaff, herein lies the hilt and heft which enables a man like Franklin Torrence to keep his eyes on the prize in the midst of treachery, adversity, and injustice. He doesnt believe in the institution and its legions of office rats, he believes in the movement. Or to paraphrase Mark Twain: Loyalty to my fellow workers always. Loyalty to union officers when they deserve it.

It Doesnt Help To Pretend The Institution Of Labor Isnt Infected With Opportunists Who Claim We Can Cure The Afflictions Of Capitalism With A Heavier Dose Of Capitalism
What should we do when Right To Work For Less comes to our state or a union president gets in bed with the boss? First and foremost, we must speak the truth. It doesnt help to pretend the institution of Labor isnt infected with opportunists who claim we can cure the afflictions of capitalism with a heavier dose of capitalism. No matter what King Bob and his ilk say, pitting workers against workers to reduce wages and foster inhuman working conditions is the agenda of the bosses not the labor movement. Competition between workers is a symptom of the disease not the cure. A union is forged in trust and camaraderie. If a union stands for anything other than fellowship between workers, its probably a front for a commercial enterprise. Working with someone who collects the benefits of a union contract but doesnt pay dues is like working with a scab. It must leave a bad taste in ones mouth and that poison is the bosss intention. In the early nineties at the former GM Saturn plant in Tennessee the names of workers who pulled their cards were published in a Hall of Shame section of a union newsletter.

It should come as no surprise that the company was footing the bill for printing the newsletter and the majority of workers who pulled their cards were angry at the bargaining chairman. The Hall of Shame scheme didnt win any hearts and minds but the boss had an ace in the hole. After the UAW lost a long bitter strike against Caterpillar, union members, as part of the new contract, had to go back to work with scabs. I asked George Cornwell, a veteran in the struggle against Caterpillar and a Blue Shirt from UAW Local 974, How does one deal with a scab? You get close to him, George said. Youre at his side all the time. You go to break with him. You go to lunch with him. You become his best friend because as soon as you abandon him the boss will take your place. Thats a tall order from a tall union man but fellowship, not animosity, is what it takes to build a labor movement that can thumb its nose at Right To Work For Less and scour the carpetbaggers from the halls of Solidarity House.

The rabbi, one of the two leaders of the worlds biggest Hasidic community, arrived in Israel to participate in his granddaughters wedding in Beit Shemesh, but thanks to the perfect timing, the visit provided a rare opportunity for an anti-election demonstration and a protest against the attempts to draft yeshiva students to the Zionist army. The event began with a procession of thousands of small children wearing their best clothes and holding welcome signs. The Rebbe, who was visiting the home of Eda Haredit leader Rabbi Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss in Mea Shearim, joined them on Shmuel Hanavi Street and continued to the central rally at the Shabbat Square. The highlight of the evening was the ardent speech of the Rebbe, who spoke in Yiddish about the prohibition against enjoying the Zionist state or taking part in the elections and said that in regards to this matter there was need for devotion. The disease of Zionism has spread, and it must be fought in every way possible, said Rabbi Teitelbaum, quoting rabbis and rebbes of the recent generations who spoke out against Zionism. Every place Zionists arrived at, they created horrible destruction, he added. The Rebbe was accompanied by some 2,000 Hasidim from the United States and Europe, and planned to hand out $6 million to institutions which do not receive governmental budgets as he had promised last month. How can a Jew who stood on Mount Sinai violate the oath he committed to there? What the haredi representatives are doing at the Knesset is a great defamation of God. A great destruction. There is no greater defamation of God It leads to the hatred of Jews in the entire world. The rebbe also slammed the government seeking to draft yeshiva students, saying that the draft decree aims to make us forget all the other troubles Zionism has inflicted on us. We must fight it uncompromisingly so that such ideas wont even cross their minds. He referred to the State of Israel and its Zionist residents as the generations Amalek and likened haredi Knesset members to Pharaohs parliament. The Zionists came from the seed of Amalek. There has never been such a sect that caused so much damage to the Jewish people Seclusion saved Jerusalem from being the remote city, like all other cities swept away by the impure state The Israeli parliament is like Pharaohs parliament. Whoever votes in the elections sends representatives to this Amalek parliament This is a riffraff government. The Zionists are real Amaleks, and therefore every Jew must engage in an all-out war against them. Rabbi Moishe Sternbuch, one of the factions leaders, said that if the Rebbe came to see how the Torah and yeshiva world flourishes there is a lot to see. But in terms of Yiddishkeit and the wars with the Zionists, the situation is getting harder every day.

CHIVERS, New York Times ALGHOOZ, Syria The arc of Omar Abdulkaders transformation from farmer to fighter resembles that of uncountable others in Syria, where since 2011 tens of thousands of men have been drawn into a civil war.

A rebel commander seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, he described the choice of a cornered man. His resistance began with peaceful demonstrations, he said. When the government answered with force, his tactics changed. It was only after they showed that they would kill us that we became armed, he said. But there is a difference between this story and many others. Mr. Abdulkader is a Kurd, not an Arab, which means his experiences and decisions upend conventional wisdom that holds that the Kurds do not see this as their fight. To hear the governments of Turkey and Syria describe it, Syrias Kurds often side with or remain neutral toward Mr. Assad, whose government supported the Kurdistan Workers Party, or P.K.K., in its bloody insurgency against Turkey until 1998, when Syria grudgingly extradited the Kurdish groups leader at the brink of war with Turkey. But the scenes in Alghooz and in a string of Kurdish villages north of Aleppo present a more complex picture of Syrias Kurds and their ambitions and relations with the government. Kurds here fiercely note that they have suffered under Mr. Assads rule, too, and taken up arms against him. They sharply contradict the notion that they rely on Mr. Assads government for protection. And so while there have been signs that many Kurds remained pro-government, with some pro-P.K.K. fighters clashing with rebels, hundreds of others have joined the Free Syrian Army, as the loosely assembled antigovernment fighters call themselves, Kurdish and rebel leaders say. The flatlands north of Aleppo are spotted with towns. Local men said that about 40,000 Kurds live here, and that their families have produced more than 600 fighters against Mr. Assad. The fighters are organized into at least eight separate groups, Kurdish leaders and fighters said. Their names include the Islamic Kurdish Front, the Pesh Merga Falcons and the Martyrs of Mecca. Defying official and popular accounts of Kurdish loyalties, these men fight beside Arabs against Mr. Assad. They and their leaders bluntly denounce the P.K.K., which the United States and Europe consider a terrorist organization, and also criticize many Kurdish nationalists, saying that calls for an independent Kurdistan are not a vision they share. We are not interested in a separate homeland, said Yousef Haidar, 72, Alghoozs mukhtar, or village elder. We want to be part of Syria.

He added, For hundreds of years we have lived together with Arabs, and after the revolution we want to live together more. The Kurdish revolutionary fighters also reject neutrality, like the public position of the Democratic Union Party, Syrias largest Kurdish political party, which has largely kept out of the uprising, furthering the impression that Kurds were not supporting the rebels. I am Kurdish, and as a Kurdish citizen I am fighting side to side with the Free Syrian Army, because you cannot find anybody who was not stepped on by the regime, or was not wronged, Mr. Haidar said. We were wronged as well. Alghooz is a small farming village on an agricultural plain. It lies a few miles east of Marea, one of the areas thoroughly anti-Assad towns. Fewer than 3,000 people live here. Its elders said that perhaps 30 men from local families were now fighting, and that these men had attracted Arabs, Christians and Turkmens to fight with them under the rebels flag. Mr. Abdulkader commands one of three sections of a group that calls itself the Grandsons of Saladin and claims to field nearly 90 fighters in all. It fights under the command of Al Tawhid Brigade, the largest Free Syrian Army unit in the Aleppo region. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Abdulkader said, he served a tour of duty as an infantry conscript at a base south of Damascus. Then he returned home to work in the local fields, growing potatoes, lentils, onions and other crops. His Kurdish village lived peacefully beside the Arab villages nearby. When protests against Mr. Assad began in early 2011 and Syrians in other villages in the countryside north of Aleppo demonstrated and organized into an underground movement, the Kurds in Alghooz did not commit. But as the Assad government turned violent, the village picked a side, its elders said. We joined the revolution, Mr. Haidar said. The imperative for the uprising, he said, was even greater than when the villages rose against colonial powers. We were colonized by the French, but even France did not do what Bashar does, he said. The government kills innocent people. We felt no other option but to fight against this criminal. In doing so, the Kurds here noted that they face the same difficulties as the other Free Syrian Army units. The Grandsons of Saladin split time now between their home villages, organizing roaming patrols at night on the roads, and holding a small portion of the front in Aleppos shattered neighborhoods. They have relied in part on the training many of their members received during their brief service as conscripts in Mr. Assads army.

One man was previously a rifleman, another a machine-gunner. One an Arab fighting inside the Kurdish group was in a Syrian military communications unit. Two were trained in air defense. All of them denounced the lack of Western support, and said their dearth of military equipment had slowed their progress and caused them many casualties. In general, we have a shortage of ammunition and weapons, said Hussein Abu Mahmoud, a construction worker who is one of Mr. Abdulkaders fighters. Most of our fighters who were killed died because we dont have enough weapons. Facing continued shortages, the Grandsons of Saladin make their own hand grenades, from pipes and locally made explosives, and use a large slingshot to heave some of their bombs, each slightly smaller than a grapefruit, toward army positions. In recent months, the fighters said they had suffered five killed and seven wounded proof enough, they said, of their role in the anti-Assad cause, and that Kurdish loyalties in Syria should not be defined by the statements from Damascus or Ankara, the Turkish capital, alone. There has been much propaganda that the Kurds are with the regime, Mr. Abdulkader said. We are not with Assad. We are fighting him.

01/07/2013 By Josh Richman, San Jose Mercury News [Excerpts] Corporate personhood takes a new leap forward Monday as a Marin County motorist challenges his traffic ticket by arguing it was OK to drive in the carpool lane because his corporation was with him. Jonathan Frieman, a local activist and nonprofit consultant, was ticketed Oct. 2 for driving in the carpool lane during restricted hours; the officer apparently wasnt impressed when Frieman showed him his incorporation papers. Frieman, 59, of San Rafael, says that if the court rules against him Monday, hes prepared to appeal the case all the way to the California Supreme Court in an effort to expose the impracticality of corporate personhood. Corporate personhood, of course, has been at the heart of the ongoing debate over campaign finance ever since the U.S. Supreme Courts 2010 Citizens United ruling unleashed a torrent of corporate contributions. Corporations are imaginary entities, and weve let them run wild, Frieman said in a news release. Their original intent 200 years ago at the dawn of our nation was to serve human beings. So Im wresting back that power by making their personhood serve me. California Vehicle Code section 470 defines a person as a natural person, firm, copartnership, association, limited liability company, or corporation. Section 21655.5, under which Frieman was cited, states that no person shall drive a vehicle upon lanes except in conformity with the instructions imparted by the official traffic control devices. Ford Greene, Friemans attorney and a San Anselmo councilman, said the Vehicle Code makes person and corporation equivalent, so when a corporation is present in ones car, it is sufficient to qualify as a two-person occupancy for commuter lane purposes. When the corporate presence in our electoral process is financially dominant, by parity it appears appropriate to recognize such presence in an automobile.
