I love designing for the screen

Monday, January 28, 13

Print and I are still on speaking terms, but were seeing other people. Its the technology, the endless possibilities, the exciting uncharted future that it holds for us. For that reason my degree project will be a screen based mobile experience. But... I didnt always know that I loved screen based design... it took quite a journey to get here!

How can Isummarizewhat I've learned so far during my rst semester at KCAI... The mostimportantthing that I learned is that I know nothing... and its reallyexciting.

To quote my rst semester blog... How can Isummarizewhat I've learned so far during my rst semester at KCAI... The mostimportantthing that I learned is that I know nothing... and its reallyexciting. I came in a little older, what i thought was a little more experienced, and ended up with a face full of humble pie. I consider It one of the best things thats ever happened to me. CLICK

I believe it will always be something I enjoy and practice but not on the same level as I want to pursue screen based work. Speaking of screen based work...

VISCOM II

THE CAUSE AND EFFECTS OF VIDEO GAME ADDICTION

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Video game addiction, or more broadly video game overuse, is excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life. Instances have been reported in which users play compulsively, isolating themselves from family and friends or from other forms of social contact, and focus almost entirely on in-game achievements rather than broader life events.

Monday, January 28, 13 Sometimes that screen based work doesnt always end up very pretty like my Viscom II Smithsonian Exhibition branding about Video Game Addiction applied to iPhone app component. At this point I definitely had no idea Apple even had an Human Interface Guidelines publication or (HIG) as its known.

But thats alright, because we all get better with practice.

This was a valuable project to me because it was my first taste of iPhone UI design and to first understand it I had to break it. Bad. The use of an icon for an app and various other applications such as information graphics was very helpful.

TYPE II / SOUND & MOTION

Monday, January 28, 13

Being able to create a screen based experience in a linear and non-linear format has been extremely helpful. For example my Type II iPad Magazine, and my Sound & Motion Union Station Interactive Timeline project with David White. Being able to tell a story is very helpful regarding UX design to better understand how the user experiences the content.

USER EXPERIENCE

Monday, January 28, 13

User Experience was a really valuable class for me. While researching Urban Chicken Farmers with Jessie Ren, and Jessica Rojas we documented their values, goals, traits, and needs within the sub-culture. Together we discovered how important it is when setting the goals of what purpose an app is going to serve and why they should even download it in the rst place.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Monday, January 28, 13

Based on that research in UX I was able to tailor my Flock iPhone app to better suit the needs of the urban chicken farmer subculture. This was also a valuable wire framing experience. Wire framing is something I actually really enjoy doing. This application will be informative as I move forward into my degree project and remembering that content can be tailored to individual audiences.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Monday, January 28, 13

In info arc I built my Vinyl Monsters collection website while having to juggle a fairly good size of different forms of content. Be it the toys that make up the collection themselves or the supporting infographics. I worked in a similar fashion building my Dallas Morning News website redesign. This will be helpful for my degree project as I will be carefully organizing and curating content on the screen.

In Type 3 I created Dayta a sans-serif typeface that I wanted to use for information graphics. To display the typeface specimen I created a series of images of different locations on earth and pulled actual factual data to implement into each slide. This allowed me to enrich the experience of the viewer and reinforce the potential use of my typeface. Learning how to showcase content will be similar to the focus of my degree project on the importance of the individual user and their story that is created and reected in their content. In Design Systems I created a system of dynamic branding that is inuenced by the user. Much like the evolution of branding I will be using user data to tailor their own mobile experience within set parameters by that user.

MX

Monday, January 28, 13

MOTI is an educational ecosystem created by my project partner Michael Armstrong and myself. The primary goal of this project was to create a community in which we could facilitate better communication between parents, teachers, and students. The secondary goal of our project was to create a tailored learning experience for students. This MX project is by far one of my most looked forward to and most disappointing projects in terms of outcome. I discovered that one can easily lose sight of the goals of a project when designing such a complex system. I learned that its important to step back away from the interface design and take a good look at the people using your system. Because at the end of the day its about the user, not yourself as the designer.

Monday, January 28, 13 While interning with Mutual Mobile last summer I was challenged to nd a problem area within the company that an intern project could help remedy. I discovered a large disconnect between new and existing employees because the company is growing so rapidly. To solve this problem I tasked myself with creating a mobile web app that would allow employees to be informed when new employees join the company or even just their department. By creating a gamer center employees can get to know one another through a department based trivia games in which they can score points for getting to know their coworkers better. There is also an additional section for company stats to encourage the setting of and beating of goals. This is currently in development. The reason why I wanted to talk about this app is because it connects people with content when and how they want it. I believe that the user should have the ultimate choice of what kind, and where content that reaches them comes from and how that content is displayed.

THE MX GREAT QUESTION

How can an iPhone application allow the 18 to 34 year old social media app user to curate their mobile experience by selecting and combining only the content that matters most to them and their lives from people they care the most about into one application.

Monday, January 28, 13 How can an iPhone application allow the 18 to 34 year old social media app user to curate their mobile experience by selecting and combining only the content that matters most to them and their lives from people they care the most about into one application. I believe that this is important because today we are overrun with social networks and apps to juggle our digital lives with. Imagine if you will all of that can be simplied to down to the things that matter most to you. You choose the content about the people and topics you care about. This will allow you more time for the things that matter most to you in your life like spending time with family and friends outside of the digital realm. So lets put the social back in social-media. RESEARCH: Josephmark - The designers of New Myspace. I am currently in touch with them about how they structure and manage user content.

The average age of a social media user is 36.9 based on 24 of the most popular social networking sites. How can an iPhone application allow the 18 to 34 year old social media app user to curate their mobile experience by selecting and combining only the content that matters most to them and their lives from people they care the most about into one application. More than half of these social media users are between 25 and 44 years old.
