BBMF Masterclass: 1he Making of
Communion
When Ì sat down to write this introduction, Ì found myself basically reeling off an
autobiographical tale about my life from 2006 to 2013 and while this was immersing for me, Ì
took the hunch that people wouldn't really want to hear about it. The reason Ì bring it up
however is because it revealed to me just how deep my connection with Bootleg actually
goes.
Ìn 2008 Ì met a guy who inspired, and continues to inspire, me. Ìn a café basement in
Glasgow, with no seats and a shitty projector, Tom Wilton started something that has
snowballed into an Ìnternational festival movement, coordinated by a team of global
filmmakers, all with the same values and vision for independent underground film.
Ì started Write Shoot Cut the blog and the short film night because of the inspiration Tom
and Bootleg gave me. Ì love people who dedicate themselves to something, no matter what.
Ì've been in this game for over 10 years and it is only now that Ì am actually making a living
from what Ì love. Ì've watched many people fall by the wayside either because things got too
tough or 'life got in the way' and God, Ì can even say Ì walked away myself a few times. But
there is something to be said for persistence, for getting knocked down and getting back up.
Ì am delighted beyond clever words to bring the Bootleg Film Festival to Edinburgh. Ìt has
been a joy to programme. Ì have been surprised, hope-filled, entertained, terrified and
genuinely emotional watching these films and Ì hope that you will feel the same way too as
you join us for three days in March.
The Bootleg Film Festival Edinburgh would not be possible without the support or many
people; our venue, our sponsors, our colleagues, our filmmaking community, our partners
and our families. Thank you to everyone who has had a part to play in making this happen.
Bootleg has always been about celebrating and showcasing filmmakers and their films. Ìt's
never been about ego, it's never been about pretention and it's most certainly never been
about using people to get what you want. We celebrate those who do, those who persist,
those who learn, those who have made 100 short films before they made a good one, those
who ignore the naysayers and those who support others. Collectively we can achieve
greatness (and have a good time doing it).
So get along to the fest. Do what you need to do to be there. No excuses, just do it.
Welcome

BBMF Masterclass: 1he Making of
Communion
Every time that we put Bootleg together, Ì'm always amazed that somehow, we're still here.
Ìt's not because Ì don't think we deserve to be, but rather that Ì'm stunned by how an idea
can grow and grow, pushing out beyond it's own limited resources.
For whatever reason, Bootleg seems to attract the most amazing filmmakers, all of whom
are pushing their own ideas further than they might have dreamed of. And that's really what
this is all about; living a life less ordinary because you couldn't imagine it any other way.
Sure, Ì may not fully understand how we're able to attract such incredible artists to our little
rock n roll film festival, but what Ì do know is that we love being in the front row, watching
everybody shine.
Maybe what's even crazier than getting to see so many brilliant movies is having such a
stellar team to work alongside. Ìt's true - there really aren't any egos when it comes to
people getting to work on the festival, and Ì think that's personified in having Neil lead the
vision of what Bootleg Film Festival Edinburgh is. Neil, like all the guys behind Bootleg, is
just a really good guy. And in spite of his own achievements, he'll be the first to turn the
spotlight on any filmmaker he loves. That's inspiring, and it's the way it should be. So Ì know
Ì speak for the whole team when Ì say we think Edinburgh is going to rock because Neil's
love of cinema is infectious and his humility overwhelming. And that makes for an easy
welcome for any filmmaker coming to say hello.
On top of this, my Bootleg family from all over - Canada, the UK and beyond - have ALL
been so influential and important in getting this together and making sure that this is going to
be a Bootleg to remember. And to think, that many have come to tag into this via the festival
itself, convincing me that yes, they felt this way too about film and filmmakers. Ìn fact,
Bootleg couldn't have come this far and become a festival that hops oceans if it hadn't been
an idea that chimed. And that's what Ì love about it most.
Ì started Bootleg because Ì believed that emulating everybody else was a bad call - to
reference Fight Club, a copy of a copy. Now, many years on, we're distinctly a different kind
of festival, not limited by our collective imaginations but rather, freed by them.
So to you, filmmakers, this is your weekend. Enjoy it and own it! And thank you for blowing
us all away.

Strings
5trings opens the festivaI on Friday 1pm - 3pm in the cinema - earIy arrivaI encouraged
Rob Savage has been making huge waves of late with his debut feature film, Strings.
Not only did it win the Raindance Award at the British Ìndependent Film Awards 2012, but it
has also recently been acquired for distribution by Vertigo Films.
The film was shot for just a few thousand pounds when Rob was eighteen years old, but
he's been a Bootlegger even longer.
Rob first screened at Bootleg in 2010 when we were ourselves still a scrappy young festival,
and it's where we first heard about his ambitions to shoot a feature.
Over the years, we've followed the progress of the film, and at Bootleg Film Festival London
in 2011, we were the first to preview ten minutes of the movie.
Now we're very excited to invite Rob back to Bootleg to officially open the festival and to
share with us all the story of Strings so far in a special Q&A.
A German exchange student begins
an impulsive and ultimately
destructive relationship with a shy
British boy in her final weeks before
returning to Munich and her warring

About the fiIm
Pale Horses
Bootleg Film Festival has always been concerned with the future of independent film, and by
extension, the future of independent filmmakers. But as anyone working in the business
today will attest, getting paid for shooting movies is extremely difficult. Just how long can a
filmmaker eke out an existence at the very fringes of their career? Ìs it possible to even get
paid? Should that be a part of indie film making? These are the faces attempting to answer
the questions...
Panel Discussion
Can no-budget filmmaking actually become a viable career!
Greg Hall's debut film The Plague was
awarded the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation
Award at the 10th Sarajevo Film Festiva,
which led to widespread distribution for the
film in the UK.
New York filmmaker, Maria McÌndoo, is
beginning on the journey of taking her first
film, Say Ìt Like Ìt Ìs, from completion to
market.
Much has been made of Rob Savage's
debut film Strings and its recent plaudits
and successes as it readies its way to UK
distribution.
Bootleg Film Festival was launched off the
back of Tom Wilton's debut feature, Ìcharus
Broken, which was released in the USA and
Canada in 2008.

Actor Paul Marlon - recipient Best
Actor (Short Film) Award for Bruised
(Bootleg Film Festival Toronto 2012)
- plays lead character Father
Clemence, a man burned by his
faith, who has taken to executing his
own form of vigilante justice whilst
driving around the UK.
Along the way, he is joined by Maria (Ana Gonzalez Bello), a hitch hiking punk, full of
attitude, who is fleeing her home in Mexico City.
Together this odd couple embark on a roller coaster of adventures that is at times both
violent, dark, scary, real, funny and heart warming.
Ìn the summer of 2012, writer/director Greg Hall, along with actor/co-writer Paul Stevens
and actor/producer Becky Finlay-Hall, worked tirelessly to shoot their latest feature film,
Communion.
Now, in a Bootleg first, they're hosting a special masterclass on the whole filmmaking
process - a real-life making of - followed by a sneak-peek at a few minutes of the film.
From the concept to production, via the hustle of an intensive crowd-funding campaign,
they'll be sharing all the details of what it takes to get a low-budget feature film from an idea
to a mass audience.
Ìf you've ever wondered what it takes to get a feature film shot on a close-to-zero budget,
this event is is an absolute must.

Bloody Cuts first came to the

Neil via Write Shoot Cut, and
instantly, he knew that we had to
have them at Bootleg to scare the

The team have been hacking
their way toward thirteen
incredible horror shorts - all of
which (so far) have been instant-
classics.
And so, in celebration of their work (and in honour of being in Edinburgh's most haunted
building), we're bringing you a night of horror - showing off their eight films so far -
including the World Premiere of the latest - Don't Move.

Bootleg Film Festival founder Tom Wilton has been upending movie making conventions for
more than a decade.
Ìn 2010, he most notably took off to New York City to shoot a feature film in just five days on
a cheap Flip camera. That film was Vinyl, and it went on to take the prestigious Best Drama
award at Portobello Film Festival, proving that quality filmmaking was absolutely in the grasp
of those hungry enough. Now he's back with his latest feature film, Pale Horses, and will
debut it as a part of Bootleg.
Set once more in New York, Pale Horses was conceived, written, shot, cut and
subsequently had it's first rough screening in just fifty days. Tom will be presenting it at
Bootleg Film Festival and sharing how and why this film was made in this way.
Joined by cinematographer and filmmaker Maria McÌndoo, Tom will also be discussing the
making of the film in New York City in a Q&A.
This is an invitation to engage in the next wave of filmmaking.
When Patti runs into Janis in the old
neighbourhood of Astoria, Queens,
it's natural for them to bond quickly
over broken-hearted-blues. But
when Keith enters the mix, things
become even more complicated.
Ìn a city of eight million strangers, it
is hard to be alone.
