Singapore American School Water Project Final Donation Report

Using the funds raised by pupils from Singapore American School GVI have been able to complete long overdue refurbishments at Ratu Meli Memorial School, creating a more child-friendly, stimulating and comfortable environment for the pupils. The initial priority was to repair the unusable bathroom block at RMMS. SAS donations facilitated the purchase and installation of 8 toilet cisterns and basins, 6 shower heads and fixings, 4 taps, a water storage tank and the plumbing materials required to ensure the bathroom block could function properly. The refurbishment was completed with a coat of paint and the construction of new secure doors. The pupils now have access to adequate sanitation facilities at RMMS and to ensure the ongoing upkeep of the bathrooms, GVI has employed a member of the local community to clean bathrooms and report on any maintenance required. In addition to the water problems experienced in the bathrooms, there was also the need to increase drinking water capacity at the school. Therefore a portion of the SAS donation was assigned for purchasing a 5200 litre Rainwater Harvesting Tank, as well as cement, plumbing materials and a filtration system to complete the installation. The SAS donation was also used to create an exciting new space for the pupils to participate in Computer Studies lessons. In 2012 RMMS received a generous donation of desktop computers from a nearby resort, but since there was no suitable or secure space to install them, they remained in storage. With the donations from SAS, GVI purchased materials to build a computer work bench in the library and made the necessary improvements to security by installing metal window gratings and new doors. The pupils now have the opportunity to participate in an interactive learning experience and learn basic computer skills which will help broaden their opportunities in the future. Using the remaining SAS funds GVI was able to redecorate all eight classrooms at RMMS. Most of the classrooms had not seen a fresh coat of paint for up to 20 years and it was hard to believe they were used by children at all. Over a period of four months GVI volunteers put their creative skills into action and transformed the dark and dull classrooms into bright, fun, child-friendly spaces for the pupils to learn in. Every classroom now has a theme and the teachers and pupils are delighted with the results. None of this would have been possible without the amazing fundraising efforts of the pupils at Singapore American School. GVI Fiji, the teachers and students of Ratu Meli School, School committee members, and local villagers have been overjoyed with the variety and scale of the improvements made possible by the donation provided by the Singapore American School
