Hello. My name is Julie and this is my father, this is my mother, this is my brother,
this is my little sister, and this is Galipette, the cat.

My mother goes out to work in the week. In the evenings and at the weekend she
does the washing, the cooking, the cleaning, looks after us and plays with us.

My father goes out to work in the week. In the evenings and at the weekend he plays
golf. He's really mad about golf!

My little sister Anna is really annoying, I mean REALLY annoying, but I love her all the
same.

Picture 2

We built our house on this beach. We like the beach.

The house has a kitchen, a living room, one bathroom and two bedrooms. Look what
a lovely house. Nearly every room is a different colour. We are so lucky to have
such a huge house. Where do you think Anna and I sleep?

Picture 3

Here we all are at the beach. Mummy is hanging out the washing, Anna and I have
built a sand castle and daddy is playing golf, as usual.

We really love living in our house on the beach.

Picture 4
One day when we were playing on the beach, and daddy was playing golf as usual,
the sea suddenly came in!

“Oh, oh! Here comes the sea. Quick, quick, run!” I shouted.

Picture 5

We all ran into the house and Daddy and I climbed up onto the roof. Everybody was
safe in the house. Daddy even played golf on the roof while I looked for ships, until
he ran out of golf balls.

“Oh dear. We will have to build our house again, but not on the beach” I said.

Picture 6

We built our next house in this desert. We like the desert. There is no sea here thank
you.

You can ski in the mountains and that's really fun. Daddy plays golf as usual, even
though you don't usually play golf in the snow.

We really love living in our house in the mountains.

Picture 10

One day when we were playing in the snow, and daddy was playing golf as usual, it
started snowing and snowing. It snowed so much that daddy and galipette climbed
onto the roof.

We were all safe inside the house but I said, “Oh dear. We will have to build our
house again, but not on a mountain”.

Key vocabulary
Revision: Family: father, mother, sister, and the cat
Revision Nouns: kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, house, green, field,
garden, flowers, green grass
Revision: Hello, run, quick, thank you, play
New Nouns: beach, sea, desert, sand, mountain, snow
New Verbs: build
New Other: lovely

Pre-Story Ideas

Introduce the new words for the story: beach, sea, desert, sand, mountain and snow.
Play a few listening games such as Rapid Reaction and Run and Touch. Then put out
several pictures of the beach, desert and mountain around the room. Play musical
bumps with the new vocabulary pictures.
Once the children understand and recognise these six new words play bingo to revise
the other vocabulary in the story, which the children have learned in previous lessons
and stories. If the children have completely forgotten the words field, garden,
flowers and pond then you may play some games with those words first such as
Vocabulary Aim and Throw followed by a speaking game such as Hot Potato.

Play Vocabulary Forfeit Game to revise all the rooms of the house and/or family
members, and if your pupils are quick learners you can throw in other vocabulary to
revise too. Lay out pictures of all the vocabulary you are revising. It is best to lay
these on the floor and under certain pictures you place a small piece of red card, or
red paper, or similar. When looking at all the flashcards it should not be possible to
tell which pictures have a red card under them. If you are using the board you can
temporarily stick this red card to the back of the flashcard with sticky tack.

Now let the children all sit on one side of the room and say there is a big river they
must cross. They come up two or three at a time and each child points at a picture
that he or she can name and turns that card over. If there is nothing underneath the
card the children can cross the river and sit on the other side of the room. If however
there is a red card under the picture flashcard then the child must do a forfeit in
order to be allowed across the river. This can be anything from doing a silly dance to
naming some extra vocabulary to miming an animal. Ask the children for ideas too.

If a child cannot name any of the pictures then he or she can ask for help and have
another child whisper the word in his or her ear. There is a version of this game with
points on the back of each picture that the children add to a team score. The red
card is replaced by a disaster where all the team's points are wiped back to zero. For
the three to five age group this is not appropriate and it would most likely make them
cry, which is not the aim here.

Remember that you have black and white flashcards for colouring. Revise colours
frequently by asking the children what colour things are. While they are colouring
their pictures you may ask them "What colour is the sea?" and so on. Also revise the
numbers regularly by counting up the flashcards, or objects that you have to hand.
Repetition is the mother of skill.

Ideas During Story Telling

The usual ideas apply to this story. On a second or third reading you may place large
pictures of the beach, desert, mountain and field on the floor and the children, or
some of the children can go to the correct picture as you tell the story. You may put
the children into groups with one set each. Lay out the pictures in the wrong order
and let the children re-order the pictures as you tell the story.

Make a play out of the story: If you have some stronger children let them take on a
specific role. For example let the best child play Julie who calls out the warning each
time, "Quick quick! The sand is coming!" Give the other children comments such as;
"OH NO!! Run!!" or something easy that they can manage, and make it the same for
each picture so they remember. This is the sort of thing you can include in an end of
term show.

Post-Story Ideas
The game Musical Cushions is ideal as a post-story activity. Play the game as
described in the preschool games book and call out, "Quick! here comes the sea!" or
"Here comes the sand!" and the children run to the cushions.

Use the black and white sketches for colouring. Take the second picture of the story
in A4 size (landscape) and cut out the rooms. Then play Build a Picture.

Practise saying the vocabulary using the Nonsense Games A, B or C. Play some
speaking games such as Snap. For Snap you could use two large piles of vocabulary
cards, mixing up the family members, rooms of the house and things from nature.
The children say snap whenever two rooms of the house come up; a kitchen and a
bathroom make a pair, as they are both rooms. Likewise any two family members
are a match, or any two natural things such as the sea and a flower.
Find the Pairs Memory game, Which One Has Gone? and The Crossing are all
excellent vocabulary games to revise and reinforce the words.

If you have a small group of children you may play Zig Zag. Here ask the children to
call out any room of the house. Then when they have named a few say children can
name family members, and colours, or numbers. You may play again saying that the
children can call out any word that they know in English that has not been said
already. Be ready to prompt by suggesting themes or naming one animal to get the
children onto the animal theme.
