Due Date: 26 Feb 2013 Answer the following questions in full. Write at least one paragraph on each. 1 How is Manglish different from other kinds of English, such as British English? Is Manglish a good or bad thing?

Before the independence day of Tanah Melayu actually British has come to colonize Tanah Melayu for some period of time. When the British came to colonize the country, they brought with them their culture and language. English was introduced as the medium of instruction in the primary and secondary schools. Manglish is actually be defined as Malaysian English.Manglish is different from other kind of English such as British English because it used mainly in Malaysia by Malaysian usually Malay speaker. The way it is different is by the use of the English itself. First when ordering a food at fast food restaurant we must say 1 coke and 2 pepsi and show the number sign instead of saying 1coke and pepsi too because it will be misunderstood by the cashier that takes an order. Then,the Manglish that used by Malaysian people at the end of the sentences must have lah and what. The use of lah and what or apa in Bahasa Malaysia is used mostly to add emphasis to the word. The example of lah is Delicious-lah this tomyam and the example for what is That dress you wear ok what!

It is neither good or bad things compared to other types of English because even if the term is defined differently in another country such as in Malaysian people describe a bungalow as a big house but meanwhile in Scotland bungalow give a meaning of a small house. For mutton in Malaysian it is understandable as a meat of goat but in other country it means a low grade of meat. In oversea cell phone is called as mobile phone but in Malaysia it is being called as handphone. In Manglish for a word people tend to make it short and sometimes make it longer for instance Boss,bill instead of We would like to have the bill now. Then another example is In another situation like a customer asking a seller whether the dress is still available but it is sold out. The seller will said No more already instead of saying There is no more left and another one is Sorry,I cannot go to the party instead of Sorry,I cant

go to the party,words full sentence like cannot should be in writing and cant in the conversation. The use of the word actually it is not wrong at all as long as it is understood by the society. 2 How does use of Bahasa Malaysia differ between social groups and classes? The use of Bahasa Malaysia differ by each class and social group which is if the person comes from an ordinary family he or she will use bahasa pasar which means informal language to communicate with each other. Each person who comes from a different land will have a different types of dialect and only use that dialect if they meet with the person who came from the same land such as Kedah and Perak dialect. The first person pronouns is different between an ordinary people and royal people for example a typical person will replace their name with saya,aku dan kamu when communicate with other persons while the King will use beta dan patik to communicate with the citizen. Same things with the daily activities did by the Kings the words such as bersantap,beradu and bersiram is used to describe them. Saya which is referring to I is commonly use in a formal conversation and it is more polite to be used but Malaysian usually refer theirself with their own name when talk with older people. The use of Aku is used in conversation between the people that close to each other. The use of Bahasa Melayu also is different by the different background knowledge of education.
