Barbarians of Lemuria is a heroic role playing gameset firmly in the swords &sorcery genre. Lemuria isa pre-historic world thatpredates ours by millionsof years. It is a land of hu-mid steaming jungles, vastuntamed wildernesses,danger-filled swamplandsand hot dry deserts. Allmanner of massive man-eating beasts roam the un-explored regions of Le-muria and beyond, fromthe islet-sized sea-serpentscapable of sinking war-galleys to the huge jungle-dwelling dinosaurs thatcan swallow a man wholeas an appetizer for biggergame. In this harsh world aresprawling cities, teemingwith merchants, trades-men, farmers and huntersall plying their trades inthe squares, plazas, ba-zaars andwharfesides under theshadow of the city walls and great palaces, templesand towers that have been built to house the nobles, soldiers, priests and wizards of the lands and to safe-guard those within from the dangers without.Dotted around the untamed regions are the ancientruins of temples, cities, tombs and palaces toppledand cracked, choked with weeds and undergrowth, lying untouched and awaiting discovery for the vasttreasures that remain within their shadowed hallsand empty corridors. It is a place of sagas and legends, epic and myth.Thongor, the heroic Valkarthian Barbarian createdmany of these sagas by his deeds and adventures. However, Lemuria is a mighty continent and thereare plenty more adventures to be had and legends tobe created! The sword & sorcery genre is a very specific one -characters are much more stereotypical than in otherIn the dim past of earth, giant reptiles ruled theearth. From among thesereptilian beings, the great-est among them arose tobecome kings and necro-mancers, conducting weirdand cruel rituals from be-hind the monolithic black walls of their stone cities.Despising the DragonKing's evil, the NineteenGods of Lemuria createdthe first man, Phondath theFirstborn, and his mate,Evalla. Man grew everstronger, building the greatcity of Nemedis and mak-ing war on the DragonKings. Thus began theThousand Year War.Events began to turnagainst the race of men, asthe Dragon Kings drovethem back behind thewalls of their puny cities,Nemedis and Althaar, Yband Yaddar. They criedout to the gods to deliverthem form their reptilian overlords. Then one nightduring a ferocious storm, Father Gorm appeared toLord Thungarth above the towers of Nemedis andbestowed upon him the Starsword, a mystic blade inwhich were bound up the power, of the NineteenGods for all eternity. The final battle was fought at Grimstrand Firth andthe Dragon Kings were defeated, shattered by thepower of the Starsword, but the life of Lord Thun-garth and the breaking of the Starsword was theprice. Some of the Dragon Kings escaped destruc-tion on the point of that sword of the gods andlurked in darkness, awaiting the chance to summontheir demonic masters back to earth once more.“Half a million years ago, on the lost continent of Lemuria in the Pacific, the first civilizations arosefrom the red murk of barbarism. For thousands of years the first men had struggled heroically to over-come the Dragon Kings - a cruel reptilian racewhich had ruled the Earth during the Age of Rep-tiles, but at last The Thousand Year War was doneand the Dragon Kings were destroyed or drivenfrom the land. And so began Nemedis, the first kingdom. Over thecenturies her children spread slowly throughout thevast, untamed jungle-lands and across the hugemountain ranges of prehistoric Lemuria and king-doms were founded...... and fought...... and fell. Butwith enormous slowness civilization began to growand before long the first great Empire would unitethese tiny warring Kingdoms into one mightypower. It was an age of warriors, when brave men andbeautiful women, savages and savants, wizards andchampions struggled to carve a red path that led tothe Throne of the World. It was an age of legendsand heroic sagas too. And this is one of them...…”Lin Carter, Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria
