Payroll jobs fell by 2.0 percent over the month in the Ann Arbor MSA, representing a drop of 4,200 jobs in January. The vast majority of job losses were the result of temporary seasonal reductions across a number of industry sectors, with over half of the decline being attributed to state government education and retail trade. Annually, jobs were 2.1 percent higher as several industries, public and private, posted employment gains compared to January 2012. Those sectorsthatdidntpostjobadditionsheldfairlystableovertheyear.

NearlyeveryindustrysectorpostedajobcutinJanuary, thoughthebulkoflossescameingovernmentandtrade, transportation and utilities. Government declines were the result of temporary reductions in support staff and student workers in state universities as state government fell by 1,100 jobs monthly. Trade, transportation and utilities fell primarily due to a substantial drop of 1,200 jobs in the areas retail sector, which is typical following theholidayshoppingseason.

Jobs were 2.1 percent higher compared to January of last year, with several industries posting job gains. Goodsproducers also exhibited notable job declines in January as a result of seasonal labor market slowdowns in these and related sectors. Construction employers cut 300 jobs over the month as weather continued to impact residential and commercial activity, while area manufacturing posted 400 fewer jobs monthly. Both of these losseswerewithintypicalseasonalnorms,thoughcombinedthesetwosectorsweredown200overtheyear.

The goodsproducing sector also felt the impact of reduced consumer demand and winter weather conditions, as construction employers reduced staff by 400 over the month and manufacturing declined by 800. All of these changes were within typical seasonal patterns, though each monthly loss was less substantialthan10yearpostedaverages.

Lansing area jobs were largely stable compared to January 2012, edging upward by 500 annually. State
government posted fewer jobs in January 2013, pushing the overall public sector lower, but nearly all private serviceproviding industries and manufacturing added jobs during this period. The areas construction job totals were also revised notably from previous 2012 levels, and though down 8.0 percent annually in January 2013, the revised annual average for 2012 exhibited no change compared to 2011. Previously, the sector had been tracking substantiallylowerovertheyear.
