Let anyone with ears to hear listen!

Luke 14.35b
Zions Prayer Garden is an important part of our worshiping community, isnt it? With all of the beautiful trees, flowers and the new gazebo, we have a place of quiet contemplation or just a nice place to eat lunch! When was the last time you took a walk through our prayer garden? It may be too cold lately for some of us, but a walk through our garden just may help keep things in perspective. Starting at the beginning of this year, each newsletter has brought us a story from a different person in the congregation. Each person has told and those in the future newsletters will tell us something about God through their own perspective. Its good for us to hear so many different perspectives! During Lent, we have heard from different people in the mid-week worship and those presentations have helped to strengthen our faith in God. But, my question this month is a bit different. What would keep us from hearing from someone who is not a person per se? It sounds odd, but you know me, I look for God to be up to something in lots of different ways! What if we asked the Zions prayer garden to tell its story; what would we hear? Right now, the garden seems to be sleeping. Just like our Lenten journey, the garden looks inwardly and almost seems lifeless. But, the garden and the original meaning of Lent tell us that our perspective may need to be broadened! Lent means growth; the garden is secretly growing! The trees are bare, weeds are at a minimum and growth has slowed. Our perception of sleep couldnt be farther from the truth. I always say that the garden in winter reminds us of our own spiritual need to look inward and to ask questions like: what is God up to in me? Where do I encounter God? How am I changing, evolving, and forming my mind into the mind of Christ, as St. Paul tells us in Philippians chapter 2? The sap is still moving, albeit slowly, within the trees. If you take the time to look closely, you can see the new buds forming new buds that remind us that God is not ever finished, no matter how slowly the changes of life take place. In a few short weeks, with higher temperatures, the garden will resurrect just as our Lord did on the third day! Then, there are the large stones on which have been inscribed the names of so many of the saints of Zions community (those who have died and those who continue their pilgrimage on earth). As you read the names, the stories and images, like beloved videos play in your mind. You remember past time and eternity the moments that you have shared with loved ones, family and friends. So many stories, so many struggles, so much faith has formed this community like the very stones that populate the prayer garden. So many crosses can be remembered through their stories; and so many resurrection stories as well! Prayer Garden. Memorial Garden. Both of the names have been used, and they each tell a story of their own. This is a holy place where many have brought forth prayers to God. Here in this place, we do remember and honor and appreciate and grow together. If the Zions Prayer Garden could speak with words audible for us to hear, I think she would sing the words of the Psalms that ring out the beauty and sanctity of Gods creation. But wait, I think the garden is speaking, just not in a way in which we are accustomed. Let anyone with ears to hear listen! Listen to God speaking to us through the songs of the birds, through the beauty of creation, even through the unwanted weed at our feet. Listen to God at work within you! Listen as Jesus calls your name to live the resurrected life! Peace, Pr Tim

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

Included in the last few months Trumpets were articles about your deacons. If you were not aware of your deacon, do you now know her or him? We hope you have a sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. Our Pastor is the best resource with whom to discuss questions and concerns, but your deacon can also serve you in a similar way. Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. As mentioned the last several months, deacons meet bi-monthly to discuss a variety of topics, but more importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim occasionally. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. If you are unsure about your deacon, please call the church office for assistance. Dick Anderson

Our Innkeeper guests are continually thankful for the food and supplies given by our members and others throughout the community. In order to continue to serve their needs, we ask that you consider giving the following items: chicken noodle soup, hot & cold cereal, toothpaste, shaving gel, canned fruit, pudding, jello, paper towels, toilet paper, detergent, boxed skillet meals, box potatoes, spaghetti and dry pasta noodles, bottled water, canned meat tuna, sausage, chicken, Ramen noodles beef, chicken & shrimp, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, bottled fruit juices, microwave popcorn, salad dressing and cooking oil. On behalf of Diana Groll and myself, we thank you for your ongoing generosity. Dick Anderson
