COMPANY PROFILE

The company was first founded in Japan as Komyosha in 1881 by brothers Haruta
and Jujiro Moteki. Together with their chief engineer Heikichi Nakagawa, they
began business with projects for the Japanese navy and soon progressed to the
production of viscous paints. In 1896, the company moved all their production
activities to a new factory in Tokyo. Two years later in 1898, Nippon Paint was
established as Japan's first true paint manufacturing company.

Nippon Paint's presence quickly spread across Japan. In 1914, having secured the
domestic market, the company expanded into China, India and the South Pacific.
After making inroads into Taiwan and North China, Nippon Paint established the
Pan Malaysian Paint Industries in 1963 - today known as Nippon Paint Singapore.
In 1967, four years later, Nippon Paint Thailand and Malaysia were established.

Innovative product breakthroughs have been a hallmark of Nippon Paint's growth

through the decades. In 1986, the advanced "Photo ED" system for printed circuit
boards was introduced. In 1992, the company introduced two more highly advanced
innovations to the industry - the "Flexceed" printing plates which could be
developed in water; and the water-borne recycling system.

Now recognised as the paint industry leader in Asia, our paints and coats have made
inroads into diverse aspects of life all around the region. In cities across Asia as
varied as Ho Chi Minh and Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, the company plays
diverse roles, enhancing and improving different aspects of life and business. In
Vietnam, for example, we have acquired more than 70% share of the motorcycle
coatings market.

In China, Nippon Paint was the first to launch the Colour Tinting System, installing
more than 800 of these systems across the country. Offering more than 1000 colours,
shades and hues, this service innovation has changed the way paint is retailed in the
country.

Besides bringing quality paint and coatings to all parts of the region, Nippon Paint
constantly seeks new products and coatings that are more eco-friendly. This focus on
protecting the environment has earned both our Singapore and Taiwan operations
the coveted ISO:14001 certification in 1997 and 1998 respectively.

President Message
Time for a change.

Nippon Paint's new management system to become effective as of April 1 was

decided on at the Board of Directors meeting held on February 26. At this time, a
new organization to be launched after the upcoming General Meeting of
Shareholders scheduled for late June was also decided upon. Announcements
regarding the new systems were made immediately.

I will be relinquishing the post of representative director and president on March 31,
and will then become non-executive corporate adviser after the shareholders'
meeting is concluded. When first appointed president, it was my intention to work as
hard as possible until I “burned out.” The four years passed as expected, but the
“burning out” part left me with various regrets. Such a rapid deterioration of
worldwide economic conditions like we are currently experiencing was something
we could not have known. At such a time, our shift to a new management system
carries much more significance. We have indeed put “new wines in new bottles.”

Mr. Kenji Sakai will assume the post of president effective April 1. He is a man of
outstanding management sensibilities and great acumen, whose technical
background is cloaked by his business achievements, one being spinning off a non-
profitable business into a separate joint-venture company and successfully
rebuilding it. His warm personality and popularity were also factors I took into
consideration in selecting him as the right man who will look after my duties after I
step down. And though the business environment surrounding us is extremely
challenging, I am confident that all Nippon Paint Group employees will unite under
the leadership of the new president and overcome numerous difficulties.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 6

Nippon Paint will celebrate the 128th anniversary of its foundation on March
14. As the day approaches it is my particular wish that the Company will
continue to build on its history, adding its role as a corporate entity that
benefits society as it heads toward its 150th and 200th years.

It has been a fulfilling four years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all for the unflagging support and guidance I received while serving in the capacity
of president.

We will cover the world..

Mission Statement
To be the partner of first choice for customers and suppliers, ensuring
sustained leadership position in the markets where we compete, delivering
long-term business value through a high performance culture, innovation,
ethics and responsible care.

The company's employees are constantly encouraged to pursue the fulfillment of the
Corporate Mission Statement.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 7

We will achieve corporate success through an unwavering
commitment to provide our customers high quality products to their
ultimate satisfaction.
We will vigorously promote and safeguard the interests of our
employees, our shareholders, our suppliers and all our others business
associates.

 We will stay in the forefront of innovation and technological

development in the paint industry

We believe in:

1. Focusing on our customers’ future first

2. Embracing entrepreneurial thinking
3. Developing the talents of our people
4. The courage and curiosity to question
5. Integrity and responsibility in our actions

These values give us standards to measure ourselves by, particularly in our dealings
with customers, suppliers, our own people and the wider world. The values have real
meaning for us and the way we behave.

Here’s what each of them means in practice:

Focusing on our customers’ future first:

We can guarantee our future only by giving our customers products and services that
improve their future. So this value comes first. It’s our priority and the reason why
we exist.

We’ve always met the needs of our customers – that’s why we’ve grown. But now
we make it very clear: it’s the basis of everything we do.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 8

Embracing entrepreneurial thinking:

New thinking and new ideas are everything – if we’re to compete. So we

need an environment and a mindset that encourages new ideas from individuals and
teams.

“Yes”, not “Yes, but...”

“Why not?” not “Why?”

We might fail occasionally, but we’ll get great ideas to market more quickly as a
result. And we’ll keep more people with truly original ideas within the company.

Developing the talents of our people

Our business will grow if our people grow too. So we’re committed to professional
and personal development. We’ll do all we can to develop existing talents, nurture
new skills and progress within AkzoNobel. Through this commitment, we’ll attract
and retain people of the highest quality to develop the business.

The courage and curiosity to question

AkzoNobel isn’t one of those companies with a set way of doing things. We dislike
rigid hierarchies and we want our people to take a broad, interested view of the
world. We like them to ask questions. “Is there a better way?” There generally is a
better way, if we challenge ourselves and our customers to look at things differently.
It’s the way we improve.

Integrity and responsibility in our actions

Business needs to work within a framework. Our employees have to be aware of

rules and regulations that they must comply with, in whatever part of the world they
work. But integrity and responsibility go deeper than that. They’re about doing

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 9

things in the right way, as individuals and as a company.Ethical and
responsible behavior matters to our business. If we do the right things, people
will know we’re a company that can be trusted. They’ll then be more likely to
work with us and invest in us – which is good for our long-term growth.

Early Colours of Life

Some facts about Paint

Who were the first ever to use paint?

The earliest use of paint can still be seen today in caves of prehistoric men.
These crude paints, created some 30,000 years ago by cavemen, were used to
document various aspects of life such as hunting. Back then, the colours were
limited to black, red and yellow, together with intermediate tints.

How did mankind discover how to create different coloured paints?

In the period 3000BC to 600 BC, the Egyptians expanded the colour range

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 12

with their chemical processing techniques. Some of the pigments they
created include green, black and white. Lake pigments, an important
paint group even today, were also first developed by the Egyptians.

In the Middle Ages, the range of coloured pigments continued to grow as

people experimented with different materials to get new colours. A brown
pigment called Mummy, for example, was prepared from the bones and
bodily remains of Egyptian mummies.

How did science create a wider range of paint colours?

In 1704, Prussian blue was developed as the first known artificial pigment.
The end of World War One also saw the introduction of synthetically
manufactured pigments and dyes. In 1918, titanium dioxide was produced.
This pigment was to replace white lead completely. It offered improved
whiteness and 'hiding' power of paint.

Who were the first to use paint for their protective properties?
One of the first people to use paint for its protective properties were the
Romans. Studies show that red lead was used to protect and preserve timber
in 600BC in Rome. Early Greeks also used paint for their protective value,
waterproofing their ships' bottoms with pitch and wax. However, Europe only
began to fully recognise the protective value of paints around the 13th
century. During the Middle Ages, paintings were protected by varnish made
by dissolving suitable resins in hot linseed, hempseed or walnut oil.

When did Asia discover and begin to use paint for its protective value?
Japan was using a totally different sort of coating for its protective value.
Lacquer, a clear coating that brings a sheen of sturdy protection to surfaces,
was used as early as the Stone Age in Japan. From about 4,000 years ago,
lacquer was already used widely for tableware, utensils, weapons and various
accessories.

How did the Industrial Revolution lead to the expansion of paint?

Paint, in particular its protective function, was given a big boost during the
Industrial Revolution as demand was then high for anti-corrosive coatings
that could delay or prevent rust and corrosion in metals. Lead- and zinc-based
paints were developed to fulfil these needs.

Many other types of paints and coatings were also created to respond to the
growing needs of paint to protect and preserve. By mid 1800s, the Western
world's paint industry was growing healthily as an increasing number of paint
manufacturing companies were founded.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 13

How did the war impact the paint industry?
The World War did much to accelerate the development of paint. For
example, large quantities of nitrocellulose - a chemical used prior to
this in paints - were used for explosives during the war. With the end of the
war, this excess nitrocellulose was put to good use as automotive coatings.

Into the Future

The paint industry today is a multi-million dollar
industry. Beyond attractive colours, the industry
now covers a large number of disciplines
including polymer chemistry, rheology and
pigment technology. Much investment has been
channelled into dedicated research to develop
paints and coats that not only look good, but also
offer increasingly improved functionalities such
as anti-corrosion and heat-resistant properties.

Present day research is focused on developing products that preserve the

ecological balance and protect life. The challenge today is to create eco-
friendly products such as water-borne coatings and lead-free paints, amongst
other products.

Marketing Mix Strategy

Marketing activities comes in many forms. One traditional depiction of
marketing activities is in terms of the marketing mix, which has been defined
as the set of tools the firm uses to pursue its marketing objectives. Mc
Carthy classified these tools into four broad groups, which he called the four
Ps of marketing.

Product

“A product is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy a want

or need of a customer at profit”.

Any product can be classified into either a consumer product or a

business product. Consumer product is the one that is bought and
consumed by a final consumer. While a business product is the one that is
bought for the purposes of reselling or for business use.

Nippon’s product comes under the definition of consumer product as

an individual buys the product and he/she uses it. . Nippon’s product is the

COLOUR CREATIONS
Nippon Paint is the pioneer of tinting systems in South East Asia.

Nippon Paint now brings its Computerised Tinting System, Colour Creations to
Pakistan. It is a computerised paint system that lets you accurately choose the right
shade, hue, tint and accent of colour.

All you have to do is choose the type of paint for your specific needs first. Then,
choose the colour that suits your theme, from more than 3,000 shades available in
our two colour collections. The Ambiance colour series offers you softer, pastel
shades, while the Evolution colour series, gives you richer, bolder ones.

Your selected colour will then be analyzed in the colour computer and the
information is sent to the dispenser. The paint is then mixed and shaken, to give you
the finished product. Its done right before our eyes, in minutes and in your choice of
Nippon Paint Perfect Emulsion, Nippon Weatherbond, Nippon Paint 9000 Gloss
Finish, Nippon Paint Brilliance Matt Enamel, and Nippon Paint Matex Gold.

Choosing the right paint and the right colour has never been easier!

From chemical treatments to protection and conditioning of the automobile surface
to enhancing the beauty of the automobile through adding brilliant colours to its
surface, Nippon Paint offers a full range of automotive products. These products
work together to beautify, protect and enhance automobiles completely.

Surface Treatment Chemical

SURF, one of Nippon Paint’s popular surface treatment chemical, works excellently
for cleaning the body of contaminants, degreasing metal and plastics, surface
conditioning and phosphating. The chemicals are available in both powder and
liquid forms, and can be applied on aluminum, iron and steel, copper and plastic by
spraying or immersion.

Cathodic Electrodeposition
Nippon Paint’s Cathodic Electrodeposition (CED)
paint provides the automobile protection against
diverse climatic conditions. This electrodeposition
system acts as an anti-rust primer, and also works
effectively as an anti-corrosion agent. Nippon Paint is
one of the leading electrodeposition paint suppliers in
the Asian automotive industry, supplying both anodic
and cathodic electro-deposition systems.

Surfacer
Used to condition the automobile after phosphating, the surfacer gives the
automobile surface anti-corrosion properties and good inter-coat adhesion. This
layer enhances the automobile’s finishing by bringing out the smoothness,
brightness and gloss of its colours. Nippon Paint's range of surfacers include sanding
or non-sanding polyester, alkyd polyester, epoxy polyester and acrylic polyester.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 52

Top Coats

This is the layer that provides the first level of protection against the elements. At
the same time, it helps transform the car into a thing of true beauty. Our topcoats
come in a range of different resin-based finishes comprising polyester, melamine,
acrylic and alkyd melamine. MACFLOW, one of the most popular Nippon Paint’s
automotive products, is an acid-resistant topcoat that reduces the use of volatile
organic compounds while meeting high performance needs for acid resistance

In Japan, Nippon Paint has also developed a

polarized paint "Maziora" that changes color
depending on the angle from which it is viewed
or where the light falls on. It is used to repaint
automobiles or as a high-design paint for new
automobiles. It can also be used for sporting
goods, cellular phones and musical instruments.

Besides this, we also have powder and water-borne

coating products, which are used extensively in Japan,
North America and Europe.

Bumper Paint
An integral part for the finishing in automobile design, Nippon Paint's paint system
for bumpers comprises the 1-pack primer for polypropylene and acrylic substrates
and resin-based top coat of polyurethane, nitrocellulose, acrylic, Cab acrylic and
polyester.

Automobile Repairs
Nippon Paint's newly-developed range of glossy pigments, scratch resistant coatings
and super-water repellent coats let car-owners give their vehicles a new lease of life
with minimal fuss and hassle.

For example, the nax Colour Match Navi CT-X, a computerised colour
matching system that uses fuzzy logic and a spectroscopic photochrometer to
analyse colours, is widely accepted in the body-shop business because of its
accuracy in matching original colours.

Nippon Paint's nax Admira base-coat is also popular for bodywork repairs. This
coating is easy-to-apply and dries fast, thus making it suitable for use in hot, humid
climates.

Another product, the nax Quick Aid System is a quick, low-cost refinish system for
minor defects. It takes advantage of the quick drying time of nax Admira, and works
in combination with aerosol top coats and primer-surfacers.

Behavior Of colors

The following aspects of color contain color combinations that exist in

harmony with each other, and are in spectral balance. Spectral balance
occurs within the eye as thousands of waves of electromagnetic energy of
different lengths bounce off (or are absorbed by) the chemical components
of any object. Light waves reflect red, yellow, and blue, and the rods and
cones in the eye's retina simultaneously mix and sort these reflected colors
into thousands of tints and shades, which work to offer endless possibilities
for specific color use.

Color is both simple and complex. It means different things to different

people in different cultures. No color is seen the same way by any two
people. Color is personal and universal, sending messages full of endless
variations.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 54

HOT refers to red in full saturation on the colour wheel; this is red at its strongest.

Hot colours project outward and attract attention. For this reason, red is often use in graphic
signage and design. Hot colours are strong and aggressive and seem to vibrate within their
own space. The power of hot colors affects people in many ways, such as increasing blood
pressure and stimulating the nervous system.

COLD refers to fully saturated blue. At its brightest it is dominating and strong.

Cold colours remind one of ice and snow. The feelings generated by cold colours - blue, green,
and blue-green - are the direct opposite of those generated by hot colours; cold blue slows the
metabolism and increase one's sense of calm. When placed next to each other, cold and hot
colours vibrate like fire and ice.

WARM All hues that contain red are warm. It is the addition of yellow to red that makes warm
colours substantially different from hot colours. Warm colours, such as red-orange, orange,
and yellow-orrange, always contain a mixture of red and yellow in their composition and
encompass a larger part of the emotional spectrum.

Warm colours are comforting, spontaneous, and welcoming. Like an Arizona sunset, the
warmth of these hues radiates outward and surrounds everything in reach.

COOL colours are based in blue. They differ from cold colours because of the additional of
yellow to their composition, which creates yellow-green, green, and blue-green. Cool colours,
such as turquoise blue and verdant green, are seen in nature.

Like spring growth, they make us feel renewed. Soothing and calm, these hues provide a
sense of depth as well as comfort. Cool colours are like a swim in a refreshing, tropical pool.

LIGHT colours are the palest pastels. They take their lightness from an absence of visible
colour in their composition, and are almost transparent. When lightness increases, variations
between the different hues decrease.

Light colours open up the surroundings and suggest airiness, rest, and iquidity. They resemble
sheer curtains at a window and send a message of relaxation.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 55

DARK colours are hues that contain black in their composition. They close up space and make
it seem smaller.

Dark colours are concentrated and serious in their effect. Seasonally, they suggest autumn
and winter. Combining lights and darks together is a common and dramatic way to represent
the opposites in nature, such as night and day.

PALE Pale hues are the softest pastels. They contain at least 65 percent white in their
composition, and have a diminished hue which is most often referred to as soft or romantic.

Pale colours, like ivory, light blue, and pink, suggest gentleness. They can be seen in the
clouds in a soft, early light, or in the lavender colours of a misty morning. Because they are
calming colours, pale hues are frequently used in interior spaces.

BRIGHT The amount of pure colour within a hue determines its brightness. The clarity of
bright colours is achieved by the omission of gray or black. Blues, reds, yellows, and oranges
are colours in full brightness.

Bright colours are vivid and attract attention. A yellow school bus, a bunch of coloured
balloons, the red of a clown's nose, never go unnoticed. Exhilarating and cheerful, bright
colours are perfect for use in packaging, fashion, and advertising.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 56

Contrasting schemes use opposites from the colour wheel, which creates different
effects depending on the strength of colours. Using strong colours in a contrasting
scheme will give a dramatic, head-turning look. Even lighter colours of contrast will
create an exciting, energising upbeat mood.

Nippon,s Harmonious Scheme

Contrasting schemes use opposites from the colour wheel, which creates different
effects depending on the strength of colours. Using strong colours in a contrasting

create an exciting, energising upbeat mood.

Nippon,s Tonal scheme

Tonal Schemes are made up of a single colour. There are no sudden colour changes in
your room, which gives the feeling of clam and quiet. If you've selected lighter
shades, you will create the impression of space and light.

In Pakistan, for the last five years the government’s emphasis has been on
infrastructural development such as road networks. New technologies and systems
are being explored to upgrade old inter provincial highways and develop new roads.
New road safety instruments such as lane marking, delineators, road signs,
catastuds, guardrails, etc. form an integral part of any major road.

Lane marking of roads plays an important role in guiding traffic directions. From the
days when a single white line was drawn in the middle of the road to keep cars to
the correct side in order to prevent accidents, road markings have come a long way
by now carrying additional features such as edge lines, chevron lines, zebra
crossings, directional arrows, lettering etc.

PAINT INFO: PAINTING TIPS:

Painting Tips | What Tools Do I Need to Have Ready Before I Start? | What Should I
Do Before I Start Painting | What is the Best Way to Paint a Room? | Paint Safely |
Dealing with Defects

Painting your own house may not be as daunting a task as you think it is. With the
right tools and techniques, a paint job can be enjoyable and rewarding. What’s more,
your finished work will be something you will be proud to call your own. Here are
some quick tips for a fuss-free paint job.

To pull off a paint job with flying colours, you will need to do the proper research
and planning. The most common reasons why paint jobs face problems are
inadequate preparation of the surface, using the wrong type of paint, buying
insufficient paint, not giving enough time for the project, and not using the right
tools.

Here are a few important tips that will help you get your paint job done as easily as
possible with maximum impact and minimum hassle.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 67

Use the right paints
Before you start painting, you should not forget about applying the right coats
underneath. Sealers, primers and undercoats will bring out the full beauty of
your paint job, while ensuring durability and long-lasting protection.

Sealers:
This helps to prevent underlying as well as
subsequent coats from reacting with each other,
while ensuring adhesion to the surface.
Primer:
Primers function to bind subsequent coats to the
surface, while inhibiting deterioration of the
paint system as a result of rust, weathering or
other forms of corrosion.
Undercoats:
This intermediate coat prepares the surface for the finishing coat while giving
opacity and film build to the paint system

After this is done, you’ll also need to choose your paint carefully according to the
surface you want to paint.

What tools do I need to have ready before I start?

Preparing the right tools will save you the time and hassle of having to scramble for
tools in the middle of your paint job.
Some of essential items you will need are:

1. Sandpaper: for smoothing out uneven surfaces prior to painting.

2. Sanding block: to keep the sandpaper.
3. Scraper: to remove peeling paint from the surface.
4. Turpentine: to wipe off oil-based paints easily.
5. Clean rags: to wipe up splattered paint.
6. Masking tape: to block off objects like light switches, sockets from being
painted.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 68

7. Covers: old newspapers or canvasses can be used to cover the floor
and furniture.
8. Brushes and rollers: choose the right type according to your purpose
and surface. As a rule, it is good to have a large brush or roller, and at least
one or two small brushes for tight corners.
9. If you are planning to do some advanced paint techniques, make sure you
have the correct tools to pull off the job, for e.g. pencil liners, dragging
brushes, shaped-stamp.
10. Paint tray: to mix paints and contain your roller.
11. Sticks: to mix and stir paints with.
12. Appropriate filler: to fill cracks or holes in the walls.
13. Filling knife: to fill the cracks.
14. Sponge and squeegee mop: to wash down walls and ceilings respectively.
15. Container: to soak brushes, rollers, etc. and to hold other odds and ends.
16. Extension pole: to reach higher areas.
17. Ladder: if painting high up is necessary.
18. Protective gear: like face masks, caps, gloves, etc.
19. Comfortable old clothes: items that you are willing to part with because
painting can be a messy business.

What should I do before I start painting?

Here are a few things you should do before painting

1. Remove as much furniture as possible.

2. Cover other surfaces.
3. Protect light switches, electrical sockets, window frames and woodwork with
masking tape.
4. Remove flaking or peeling paint with a scraper. Then sand and dust off the
surface.
5. Patch up cracks or uneven surfaces with appropriate filler. When filler is dry,
sand and dust off the area.
6. Make sure the surface is clean, grease-free and dry
o Wash surface with water & liquid detergent.
o For heavy and stubborn stains: Use turpentine and wash thoroughly.
o Fungus & mould: Remove as above, followed by fungicidal wash or
bleach.

What is the best way to paint a room?

The best way to get a room painted is as follows:

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 69

• Start with the ceiling before painting the walls. Move on to the areas
around doors, windows, cornices and finally skirting. This sequence
prevents paint splattering from the ceiling and spoiling other painted
areas.
• Paint the difficult areas like corners and edges first so that it’ll be easier to
cover large areas later.
• Paint should be applied in overlapping, continuous strokes. Overlap your
strokes when moving from area to area.
• Paint up-down or left-to-right, depending on which is more convenient.
Gently and lightly finish off in an up-down stroke if possible.
• Always paint more than one coat of paint, allowing for appropriate drying
time between coats.

A few more pointers

1. Read instructions
The labels on paint cans contain important information and advice that you
should read before starting any paint job.
2. Stirring
All ready-mixed paints must be stirred thoroughly before use. Stir until the
colour of the paint is homogenous.
3. Loading the brush
Do not overload the brush or it will drip. Dipping only the last one-third of
the bristles is enough. Excess paint can be wiped off on a piece of string tied
across the can.
4. Cleaning
Always clean off any splattered or spilled paint immediately. Wash all
equipment immediately after use -
For emulsion paint, use water.
For oil-based alkyd paint, use thinner as specified.

Paint responsibly
Do not dispose of unwanted paint down the drains. This will result in an unwanted
layer of paint in the drain that will be inconvenient to remove. In addition, the paint
could damage the surrounding flora and fauna. Allow paint to dry out in the
container before dropping it into the bin. Contain any paint spillage with earth or
sand if painting outdoors. Also do not leave paint chemicals in black polythene bags
in the sun as they could combust.

Paint safely
It is important to keep some safety pointers in mind when doing your paint job.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (PAKAIMS)LAHORE 70

1. Always keep paint away from children.
2. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with water. Seek
medical advice if pain persists.
3. On contact with skin, wipe immediately with a cloth and wash with plenty of
water and soap. Do not use paint thinner to remove paint from skin.
4. Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection.
5. Do not smoke while painting, especially when using turpentine and oil-based
paints.
6. Wipe away paint spills around the rims of the paint container and lid.
7. Close lids of paint cans tightly after use. Unused paint must not be left
uncovered.
8. Store leftover paint in a cool, dry ventilated place.
9. Use a garbage bag for paint cans or other items that you wish to dispose of.
Make sure the bag is placed in a bin which is secured.
10. Do not throw paint into the drains around your home.
11. Make sure there is adequate ventilation when painting.

Now you are ready to have a go at painting your own room or other areas of your
home. While following the above pointers closely will make your job a lot easier,
feel free to experiment with paint techniques and colours. A little creativity will do
wonders in any paint job.

Dealing with defects

Many problems can occur during painting. Sometimes, they occur simultaneously.
Understanding the causes of some of these defects can make the paint job easier.
Here are some common paint defects and their solutions:

Sagging
Sagging happens when the paint droops downward after
being applied on the surface. It is caused by the pigment
separating from the paint and settling at the bottom of the
container and comes as a result of insufficient stirring or
shaking during storage, storing for too long or under too
much heat, or faulty thinning.

The solution:

• Avoid storing in hot locations for long periods.

• Store in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
• Thin only with appropriate recommended thinners.

Wrinkling

Wrinkling happens when the paint forms film-like undulating waves.
Applying too much paint, or drying during high temperatures, or painting
on a topcoat before the undercoat is dry can cause this defect to happen.

The solution

• Avoid applying too much paint.

• Make sure no paint accumulates round bolts, rivets, etc.
• Wait until each coat dries before you re-coat.

Decolourisation
After paint is applied, it may fade or discolour. This is caused by
particles in the wall reacting with the paint when it is drying.
Decolourisation could also be caused by water seepage, or by
contaminants in metal or wood.

The solution

• Repair water seepage.

• Make sure surface is dry before painting.
• Apply an alkaline-resistant or oil-based paint.

Peeling
Peeling is caused by moisture on the wall, poor surface preparation or
using the incorrect painting system. This defect happens on walls as well
as wood or metal surfaces.

The solution

• Walls
• Check and repair water seepage.
• Ensure walls are dry before painting.
• Use an alkali-resistant basecoat or sealer.
• Patch surface defects with putty.
• Wood
• Prime wood before painting, sand surface and clean off dust.

• Metal
• Remove all paint from metal before re-painting. Prime surface and
re-coat with suitable paint.

Chalking

Chalking occurs when ultraviolet rays cause the paint binder to

disintegrate. It can happen when interior paints are used for exterior
surfaces.

The solution

• Remove any unstable paint films.

• Allow wall to dry thoroughly, and repaint with recommended paint.
• Make sure paint is not adulterated with foreign materials.

Blistering
This is caused by moisture being drawn through from the wall to the paint-wall
interface.

The solution

• Remove any unstable paint films. Allow wall to dry thoroughly, and repaint
with recommended paint.

Algae/Fungus Growth
Algae and fungus can grow when the surface is continually damp and
dirty. Insufficient fungicide/ algaecide in the paint can also worsen the
situation.

The solution

• Remove algae / fungus by high-pressure washing.

• Treat surface with Nippon Paint Fungicidal Wash. Wash again to remove any
residue.
• Allow wall to dry before applying with recommended paint.

Blisters
Also caused by water seeping out of the wall surface. Peeling, efflorescence, and
watermarks are also caused by high moisture content in the wall surface.

The solution
