Janet Lunn wasanincredibleauthorbecauseshetooksingulareventsinhistoryandmade them come alive. This talent isexpressed keenlyinTheStoryofCanada,whichshewrotealongwith Christopher Moore. With pictures, illustrations, stories and much imagination, the events inthe historyofCanadaunfurlthemselvesseeminglybeforeyoureyes. JanetLunnwasborninDallas,Texas,onDecember28,1928,andnamedJanetLouise Swoboda.HerparentswerefromNewYorkandofGermanancestry.ThefamilymovedtoNew JerseywhenJanetwassixmonthsold,thenmovedtoafarmhouseinNorwich,Vermont,builtin 1792.DuringtheGreatDepressionherfatherwasfortunateenoughtofindworkinHanover, acrosstheConnecticutRiver.Janethadtwosistersatthattime,onewasnamedMarthaand was4yearsolderthanher,andonenamedAnnwhowas2yearsyoungerthanJanet.Attheir farmhousetheyhadaJerseycow(Emily),ahorse(DannyBoy),apig(Clarence)andalotof ducksandchickens. Weclimbedthehills,swaminthebrook,dreamedsummerafternoonsawayundertheold crabappletreeintheuppermeadowatleastthat'swhatIlovedtodo.Iusedtolieunderthat tree,imaginingthepeoplewhohadplantedit,imaginingthepioneerswhohadcutdownthe forestandbuiltourhouse.Imadeupstoriesaboutthem.Ididn'tthinkofthemasstories,though, theyweredaydreams.Allthesame,Iworkedonwhatthecharacterssaid,whattheylookedlike, whatourhouselookedlikewhenitwasnew,neverrealizingthatIwaslearningtobeawriter. In1936,herbrotherFrankwasborn.Threeyearslater,thefamilymovedtoRye.Duringthe SecondWorldWartheymovedbacktoNewJersey,inMontclair.WhenJanetdecidedtogoto QueensUniversityinCanada,herfatherwrotetotheregistrars.Theanswercamebacksaying thatshewouldhavetofinishgrade13,andoffshewenttoNotreDameCollegeinOttawa.When shehadfinishedthere,shewenttoQueensinKingstonandthereshemetherhusband, RichardLunn,anairforceveteranwhosatbehindherinEnglishclass.WhenJanetandher husbandmovedtoTorontoin1955,theyhadthreechildrenwiththem,Eric,Jeffery,andAlec, andtwomore,KateandJohn,wereborninToronto.

Finally,oneofthemanystoriesshehadsenttomanynewspaperswaspublished!!Nexther firstbook,DoubleSpell,cameout!!Bythetimehersecondbookwaspublished,(TheRoot Cellar)theLunnshadmovedtoanoldfarmhouseinPrinceEdwardCounty,Ontario.Whenher youngesthadmovedout,shewasafulltimewriter.Herhusbanddiedin1987andJanetlivedin thefarmhouseforanother12yearsbeforemovingtoOttawa. ThejourneythatJanetLunntakesyouonwillkeepreadersentrancedwiththeeventsin historywhichcomealivewiththesprinklingofdetailandtheimaginationtheJanetLunndisplays inherwork.

In1815,theNapoleonic,andtheAmericanwarshadjuststoppedandthegreatmigrationwas justbeginning.Thegreatmigrationwasenhancedbythefactthepricesoftraveldropped,the depressionafterthewarhadjuststarted,andmanysoldierswerelefttofindworkastheycould. Theroadswerebadandhardtotravelandtheconditionontheboatswasabominable.
