I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of an hour class, the grade 5 students are expected to:
• Analyze the usage of the modal verbs should , shall , will and would in the dialogues
of the folktale entitled the Legend of the pineapple.
• Exemplify the usage of “should, shall , will and would” verbs when expressing to
anyone in real life through the given dialogue;
• Apply the “should ,shall and “could / could not” phrases through a short quiz.

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Pre-listening activity
HOW DO YOU FEEL TODAY?

o Discuss the instruction about a conversational activity to check how are the
students currently feel.
o Present a "Feelings Chart" to the class.
o Ask the student, “How do you feel today?” o The students will choose and read
one feeling from the chart.

B. First listen

READING OF THE FOLK TALE LEGEND OF THE PINEAPPLE.


 Present the folktale on a powerpoint and ask your students to read it together.
 After reading the story point out the usage of one of the following modal verbs in
a dialogue within the folktale then explain if how it was being used to give a
meaning to the dialogue.
 Proceed to discuss the different usage of modal verbs : should , shall ,would will.

THE DIFFERENT USAGE OF MODAL VERBS: SHOULD , SHALL AND


WOULD ,WILL.

o Conduct a short discussion in guiding the student about the differences of


should ,shall / would , will along with how and when to use them when talking
and expressing to someone.

Will – used to show desire, preference, choice or consent:


I will accept your offer.
Will you please be quiet?

To show the future:


It will be a great party.
I will probably go out tonight.

To express capability:
The ship will take three hundred guests.
This bottle will hold two litres of wine.

To express determination or insistence:


I will pass my driving test.
I will do as you say.

Would – used to show preference


I would rather go to the cinema today. (I prefer going to the cinema today.)

Would – to show a wish


I would like to have more free time.

Would – for advice


If I were you, I would study economics.

Shall – to make a suggestion


Shall we dance?
Shall I go now?

Shall for obligation in very formal situations


You shall obey the rules.
Students shall not enter here.
There shall be no food and drink on the premises

Should - is often used to give an opinion, to make a suggestion, express a preference or an


idea.
You should stay at home if you are feeling tired.
I should walk to work.
He should be more open to ideas.
Should – to ask for an opinion.
Should we tell him about our idea?
What should we do now?

C. Pair process-based discussion


DIALOGUE BY PAIR

o Demonstrate the given dialogue:

MOM: Pina! Pina! Come over here, anak. I am very sick. Would you cook some porridge for
me please? I am too weak to get up.”

PINA: What do you want, mother? You would really expect me to cook for you?.

MOM: Pina look it will be very simple just follow me and listen to me clearly. Just put some
rice in a pot and add some water.

PINA: No Mom , you should be doing the cooking instead. I just want to keep playing all day.

MOM: Oh, you lazy child! You probably did not even bother to look for it! What am I going to
do with you? Here I am, sick, and I cannot even count on you!, I Shall wish that you will grow a
thousand eyes in your head.

 Pair the students in alphabetical order


o Then, let the students act the given dialogue by pair.

D. Second listen
EVALUATION ACTIVITY

o Based on the given dialogue, ask the student to differentiate the modal verbs
should , shall and would , will from the activities. o The student may review or refer
to the previous discussion in the Context Setting or during the first listen activity.

E. Whole-class process-based discussion

o Discuss to the students the instructions about how to answer the modal verb quiz.
