Double Dealing Unit 3 mee1ngs + wri1ng minutes; Unit 9 general business vocab; Unit 7 small talk; some formal wri1ng (U3, U5 reports); + 3 listenings English 365 Lots of listening and speaking ac1vi1es, plus socialising Interna1onal Express Many business func1ons covered, with hopefully plenty of relevant speaking prac1ce (including pronuncia1on, which Ana could improve); no focus on socialising (Jose)

The Business

Plenty of formal business wri1ng; contract vocab; plenty of relevant speaking; but no socialising

Intelligent Business (part 1) Ana

Unit 9 on small talk; otherwise, not much? Intelligent Business (part 2) Unit 13 on summarising (spoken language??); + Unit 10 giving reasons ?? and Unit 12 making a case ?? Overall: The wri1ng aspect could be largely covered by The Business. Other areas by English 365? Yes...should be 1 book... What are your thoughts?. (Jose)

I agree that The Business could be a good choice for Ana, especially for wri1ng. The "Speaking" sec1on also looks useful, since the ac1vi1es could be done in groups where listening is equally important. Without seeing the chapters, it's hard to say how the book would handle the speaking sec1ons. I'll assume that we would need to provide adjustments to those acitvi1es to make them more listening-focused. My impression of English 365 is that it's for a lower level student than Ana, based on the grammar points men1oned. What I'd use in The Business for Ana: (Carol)

Ana

The chart-based visual organiza1on, which is easy to understand and presents languages skills in the context of a business area. We could present our syllabus in the same way. - All the "Grammar" and "Speaking" and "Wri1ng" topics - Under "About Business" I like 3.1, 4.1 and perhaps 5.1 - Under "Case Studies" it's hard to know which ones to keep, but I'd guess 3.6, 4.6 and 5.6 might be OK since they go with the topics I picked under "About Business Under "Vocabulary" I like 3.2, 4.2, 5.2 and 8.2

What I'd add to supplement The Business: - Under "Speaking": add a new line for "Gegng Clarica1on" - Under "Wri1ng" we need a new line for "Draiing Contracts" - Under "About Business" I'd replace 1.1, 2.1, 6.1, 7.1 and 8.1 with contexts we get from Ana (perhaps we could guess a few for our ajempt at a syllabus). We could also add a new line for "Socializing", which means we'd have to come up with topics for the grammar, speaking, wri1ng, etc columns. (Carol)

For the case studies rela1ng to those new business contexts, we could get some from Ana's past experience, or we could nd a couple of cases related to the sports agent or hospitality business We could add a "Listening" column with topics that related to the ones in the "Speaking" column (Carol) Ana

I agree with what the two of you say, and acknowledge the importance of socializing ac1vi1es which are not a strenght in The Business. I think that the addi1ons made by Carol could reasonably t Anas needs.

Overall, The Business is the bet match for Ana, if we think that there should be only one book to be picked, as it covers a wide array of situa1ons related to wri1ng skills, skill of which Ana needs to improve. Assuming that the same book also oers listening prac1ces on the topics that it aims to explore, it could only benet her more if the vocabulary covered in the book relates more closely to her needs, which can be achieved through the ammendments made by Carol. As usual I'm happy with what you've wrijen. Since I must contribute, here are some thoughts that came to mind: - your reason for choosing those Case Studies seems logical, but I wonder if we need to have any case studies at all? If we need them, then perhaps bejer if we nd case studies about the sports agent or hospitality business (is this as easy/quick as it sounds?) - you suggest adding a new speaking ac1vity "Gegng Clarica1on", but I wonder if that might be covered under Speaking 7.4 "Communica1ng in mee1ngs"? - listening and socialising are important areas that are not adequately covered (for Ana's needs) in the book. You suggest adding them, but how do we do that? To me the most straighoorward way seems to use material from other sources - preferably from only one book. If we used any of the other books in (Jose)

the list this would contravene the brief, but in real life wouldn't we likely do this, use what we have to hand if it was useful? A higher level English 365? I know I didn't clearly say so, but I didn't mean to suggest that we should use all or many of the books; that list of books was really meant as a list of features (in each book) that I thought could be useful for our purposes. However, I did suggest that we use two books, but Carol points out that the English 365 in the list is too low level. (Jose)

Just a headsup about my choice of syllabus for Young Hee. I thought Interna1onal Express has a good mix of grammar, vocabulary, skills, pronuncia1on, as well as business func1ons and means of communica1on, that Young needs to prac1ce, before applying for a secretarial job. Lemme know if you agree; no point going any further, otherwise. (Susan) Young-Hee Interna1onal Express looked prejy good. I was a bit torn between that and English 365 for Young Hee. You're right about what IE has to oer...lots for her. One thing I didn't like about it was the focus on grammar. There was a nice range of vocabulary in it, though, so she wuold get some Bus. E and some Gen E. My rst inclina1on was to use English 365, but aier reading your comments and looking at both of them, I think you are right....Interna1onal Express is probably the right 'core' book for Young Hee. It is very nicely Bus E. related, and not at too high a level. I wasn't too fussy about the tpics, though. (Heather)

Young-Hee

E365 is too basic, but I did like how the book progressed, introducing one grammar structure for use throughout a cycle of three chapters. What did you thnk of those 2 headings: 'skills focus' and 'focus on func1ons'? I thought that the sub-headings under SF were topics, and the subheading under F on F were performance tasks. It got clearer in the second half, but the rst 1/2 stumped me. I think one of the things that denitely needs adding to here is more performance tasks, especially in the areas of speaking, and listening for a purpose. (Heather)

Young-Hee

yes the Skills focus are topics and the Fon func1ons, the related business func1ons. I thought some of the topics like Na1onal Branding, Gap yrs for adults and Ethical consumerism were unrelated to Young's sphere of work Instead can we incorporate Email Ego, Socialising and 1+1=? from double Dealing and use them to develop L/W/R/S skills? Alterna1vely, Social Phrases at work/ outside and Communca1ng at work from English 365. Are we allowed to do this?. (Susan)
