While the weather continues to be as indecisive as a girl in a shoe store, I have made up my mind that Im attending the Norman Music Festival. I am so stoked about this years lineup that I have mapped out a system to see as many bands as possible in the short 3-day hurrah. Until then, Ive been enticed by our article about The Mont, so Ill be heading there for some quality patio and Swirl time while I wind down my last semester as an undergrad at OU. Its only taken me six years. Until next time, xoxo,

Game Review
Bioshock: Infinite
I already spent the main portion of this page discussing the value of Bioshocks narrative, so I guess its time to tell you how good/bad the game is, right? Listen, this game is incredible. Its one of the best games to come out in the last decade. It has everything you could ever want in a video game: incredible setting, sharply written story and fun combat. The game follows the exploits of Booker DeWitt as he works to bring Elizabeth back to New York from Columbia, a city floating around in 1912. DeWitt has his own demons to expunge, and Elizabeth is the ticket in doing so. But upon your initial visit to Columbia, it is obvious things arent what they seem. And thats where Im going to stop. This games plot shouldnt be ruined for ANYBODY. The game isnt perfect, but its imperfections are overshadowed by everything else it does right. It has great atmosphere, amazing characters Elizabeth is yet another female video game character that people can look up to and its also a fun game to play, which is important when you are trying to make a good video game. Dont wait for it to go on sale. Stop reading this and go buy the game. Its creators deserve your $60.

My Favorite Holiday
Mel Guapo tells us about his favorite holiday coming up on April 20 this year.
Everybodys talking about Norman Music Festival 6, which is most definitely one of my favorite days of the year, but today Id like to tell you about another day that is equally as important in my eyes, a day that not everybody else is talking about because theyre not part of the culture. That holiday arrives on April 20. And what holiday is it? You guessed correctly: Record Store Day. Record Store Day is about more than a sentimental culture holding on stubbornly to the past in a changing world. It is an expression of value in the tangible moment. Deeply passionate music lovers spend a great deal of their time submersing their ears in sound and song, and humans who do this over a long period of time become intensely sensitive to the music experience, and refined tastes need refined experiences. Record Store Day is about a community of people who share the experience of investment in sound and song and the lifestyle that comes along with it. Record Store Day is a modern holiday for modern Americans. Its history may be short, but it has momentum and represents a flourishing trend in America: the local experience. Especially in Norman (and Oklahoma and America in general), value starts at home. Why go to a national chain restaurant when you could go to a local restaurant that provides a unique experience deriving from a locally grown vision and locally grown aesthetic? When things become too easy and too repetitive, they lose their meaning. Vinyl culture (and the independent record store experience in particular) reestablishes music as a local and meaningful experience, and Record Store Day is the national holiday that recognizes and reveres and reminds us that those are important values to our musical experience. The worldwide international pop music experience is dead because it offers less and less of a real connection. The trend of music is homeward. As it turns out, you can go home again. It just takes investment. Record Store Day is the representation of a culture of people investing in themselves and their communities and an experience. Believe it or not, Mel Guapo was once a rampant pirateer of digital music, but it was that experience that eventually led him back to vinyl and the local record store experience. Why? Because I literally downloaded everything, and that eventually led me to the philosophical question: now that youve got it all, what will you listen to? We can only listen to so much music in our lifetime. We are limited creatures in this sense. So that means that if were going to listen to anything at all, we should invest in it because, as we all know, you reap what you sow. Which is to say, what you get back is in accordance to what you invest in any given thing. For music lovers, Record Store Day is an investment in their community, but more importantly, its an investment in themselves. If youve ever been lucky enough to make it out to Record Store Day, you know how much of a payback you truly receive. (Record Store Day will be celebrated around the country, and more particularly right here in Norman on April 20 at Guestroom Records on Main, one of the proud, official independent record stores around America participating in the sacred holiday. This will be featuring live music, free drinks and usually an assortment of free seven-inch records while supplies last.) For more information: Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the U.S. and thousands of similar stores internationally. This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day, and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cookouts, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008, and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April. - From the www.recordstoreday.com About Us page

This season started with so much hope and dreaming of being in the national title game again. Returning players and a mix of young talent had the Sooner faithful excited about the season. Then UCLA showed up, bullied the Sooners and won at the LNC 86-80. That was on top of the loss of Kaylon Williams to a seasonal Achilles injury, Lyndsey Cloman quitting basketball due to a back injury and losing newcomer Maddie Manning to a knee injury as well. The killer blow came in the game versus North Texas, when everyone at the LNC saw and heard the pain in the heart and soul of the team, Whitney Hand. Hand was going up for a simple lay up when her knee gave out. Hand lay on the court in pain and the LNC fell silent. The North Texas coach was trying to console Hand, and at that moment, Sooner fans had to wonder, what next? Coach Coale and the Sooners had to dig down deep, and that is what they did with a minimal bench and having to run the starters at an entire game pace. Coach Coale got the most out of every single minute the girls played on the court. Overcoming all odds and multiple injures, the Sooners had a good year in the Big 12, being competitive in almost every single game and giving the Sooner Nation something to cheer about and a team to get behind. Even with all the Final Fours and the All-Americans, this Sooner team by far got more out of their players than any other team in the Coale era. After Hand was lost for the year, do-everything player Joanna McFarland became an absolute monster on the court. McFarland took over as the emotional leader on and off the court, spearheading the run at the end of the year with her will and determination to get the Sooners to the Sweet 16. In the rematch with the UCLA Bruins, a team that pushed and shoved the Sooners around in the early season, it was McFarland and Aaryn Ellenberg that would not let the Sooners go quietly and led to the revenge victory of 85-72. The Sooners season came to an end in Oklahoma City against the Tennessee Volunteers, but in my opinion this was by far the best coaching job Coach Coale has done in her career with what she had to work with and the final results. Coach Coale is an amazing coach and this season proves that much. In the upcoming years, you have to think the basketball gods will smile upon the Sooner program and some luck will come their way, but until the luck arrives, Sooner Nation can be happy knowing it has one of the best in the business at the helm of the team.

I admit it: my food pyramid is off balance. There are only four sections. The bottom, where the grains would normally be in a traditional food pyramid, contains only chocolate. Opposite that, at the very top, is fruits and vegetables eat sparingly. Next up is the peanut butter group and, my personal favorite, the cheese group. Each time I go to the Mont, I know I will get my daily servings of cheese. When I think of the familiar and beloved Norman destination, I think of just that, the delectable cheese concoctions pulled pork nachos, cheese fries and, of course, the queso. Oh, yes. Recently I read a Buzzfeed article that spotlighted the best college foods around the country, and our very own Mont made the cut with its queso. Indeed, whenever my friends and I are having a bad day, I console them with the prospect of drowning our troubles in Sooner Swirls and the spicy, cheesy snack. (http://www.buzzfeed.com/emofly/best-college-campus-foods-in-america if youre interested. The Mont is number 16.) If I dont have a jones for comfort food, the Monts atmosphere lures me in. From the outside, one sees a vine-covered building and a patio dotted with umbrellas and tiki huts. It looks exotic, like youre actually sitting on the patio of a local Mexican restaurant where piping hot tortillas spiral toward your plate and icy margaritas wash away the burn of homemade hot salsa. Actually, that sounds pretty similar to the Mont. On the inside, it looks like a cozy library. Booths sit on either side of a crackling fireplace (in the wintertime, never during the inferno that is Oklahoma summer). One can usually find a bachelorette party or a 21st birthday occurring in the blue room, a circular seating arrangement thats more exclusive. I myself wrote an unintelligible message in one of the blue rooms bookshelf books on my 21st. Good times. If I hear the word Mont and dont crave the queso or the heavenly cheese fries, perfectly crispy and coated in cheese and smoky bacon bits, then I immediately think drinks. If Sonic is known as drink central in the fast food arena, then the Mont reigns supreme for sit-down restaurants. Who can bypass the Sooner Swirl, the marriage of sweet sangria with tangy margarita? When my finals are done, thats all I can think about. If youre not a fan, theres always a mild and ice-creamy grasshopper, fruity Miami vice or an old-fashioned rum and coke. Normanites know the Mont is a hallmark of campus eating, but just how legendary is it? Hasnt it always been around? According to the history page on its website, the Mont sprouted up in the late 20s off of Oklahoma highway US 77. It served as an oasis that gave travelers Mexican, American and breakfast foods. Back then it was called the Monterrey. After its owner Joe Charles died, the restaurant closed in 1968. Though various owners came and went, the building was eventually left vacant. Fortunately, a group of frat boys decided to reopen the restaurant on Oct. 30, 1976, dubbing it The Mont, as it was affectionately known in town. Today it still thrives. College students, families and people of all ages come together to enjoy the historical restaurant in Norman. Rated Best Restaurant in Norman among countless other awards, the Mont is worth stopping by or becoming your new habit.

HISTORIC ANDREWS PARK NORMAN, OK
Countdown to NMF6
Normans sixth annual Music Festival is just around the corner. Slated for April 25-27, musicians and attendees will flock to 17 stages located across the downtown area from the 300 block of E. Main Street to the railroad tracks. The event is free, open to the public and this year, it has been expanded to three days. This years headliners include alternative-pop/rock band The Joy Formidable, from England, Big Sams Funk Nation, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, JD McPherson, King Khan & BBQ Show and Ramsay Midwood. Steven White, president of the Norman Music Alliance, the group responsible for oversight of the event, said the Music Fest attracts approximately 10,000 new people each year, with approximately 70,000 people over three days expected this year. White points out that Norman calls itself the City of Festivals and the Norman Music Festival is a big draw. First and foremost, its a fun event in a clean, safe, urban environment, White said. I believe the Norman Music Festival adds value to the community whether its a family or business looking to relocate in Norman. The three main events in Norman the Norman Music Festival, the Medieval Fair and Jazz in Juneare all entertainment they [people] can have with their families thats free. Many local artists are slated to appear as well. Some, like Beau Jennings, have appeared at former Norman Music Fests. Jennings says hes played at all but one. He and his band, Beau Jennings and the Tigers, have been together for about a year and play rock and roll with folk and Americana. Jennings says the festival is good for the city. I think its a great thing for the city. I have a lot of fun every time we play, Jennings says. Well play some new songs and from our Sweet Action ET. Jennings added that he will have ET albums and his whole catalog available at the event. White and fellow organizers have worked hard to pull the event together with a variety of musicians and activities. There will be an area for kids on Saturday. There will be arts and crafts, face painting and entertainers wandering the crowd while juggling, riding unicycles and performing magic tricks. White encourages music lovers to attend. Theres something for everyone from rock and roll to funkas in Big Sams Funky Nationwho White says, Theyre as fun as the name of their band.
