MATERIALS AND PREPARATION Materials Wanted: Best Friend by A.M. Monson Character Change chart paper Character Traits chart paper Preparation Prepare Character Change chart papermodeled directly after graphic organizer PLAN Read Aloud (9:00-9:30) Before Reading o HookDraw on prior knowledge Have you ever gotten into a fight with your best friend? Have you ever said or done anything mean to your best friend? Did you realize after that what you did or said was wrong? What did you do? o Introduce book In this story a cat and mouse who are friends but get into an argument. As Im reading I want you to pay special attention to Cat and how he changes from the beginning of the story to the end. What does he say or do at the beginning? At the end? What are his feelings at the beginning? At the end? o Introduce skilldrawing inferences At the end you are going to make an inferenceyou are going to use what you learned from the book and what you know on your own to decide what trait describes Cat. During Reading (engaging students, comprehension)

o Questioning Think about what Cat just did and what he said to mouse. Look at the pictures. Make an inference--how do you think Cat feels right now? Think about what Cat just said. Look at his facial expression in the pictures. Make an inference--how do you think Cat feels now? After Reading o Fill in chart/Discussion of change over time In the beginning, what did Cat do or say? How did he feel? Was mean to Mouse, cheated playing checkers, didnt let him play Crazy Eights Was angry In the end, what did Cat do or say? How did he feel? Welcomed Mouse back, complimented him, played Crazy Eights Was grateful, appreciative, happy to have Mouse back o Turn & Talk: Discuss with a partnerThink about how Cat changed over time, and what you know from your life about what it means when people change like that. What is a character trait that we could use to describe Cat?
