UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN BURUNDI. District of Gisuru, Nyamutetema Parish.

REPORT OF THE HONEY BUSINESS PROJECT- April 4th, 2013. 1. Background The Nyamutetema Parish of the United Methodist Church of Burundi (UMCBurundi) is located at Gisuru commune, the Province of Ruyigi, close to the Tanzanian border in the eastern part of Burundi. Nyamutetema is one of the parishes making up the district of Gisuru according with the organization of the UMC-Burundi. The parish currently counts 700 members among whom some are returnees from the former Burundian refugee camps settled in the western part of Tanzania, the area of Kigoma, mainly at Kanembwa, Nduta, mtendeli and Karago refugee camps. Others are stayees who did not take flight but were forced to live as IDPs during the crisis. All of these Christians live in peace with mutual acceptance and help. They live relying on sustainable agriculture and breeding as the main livelihood activities to recover from the misdeeds of the last war in their area. The population of the location still is in need of intervention from national and/or international development actors to recover from poverty or reduce it and progress towards meeting the MDGs; so are the Christians of the Nyamutetema parish of the UMC-Burundi. It is with this purpose that the Anglican Church of Magill, via Rev. Mike Russell, developed a partnership business with the Nyamutetema parish. Along with the honey business project, the Nyamutetema parish is invited every time to submit concerns for prayers points from the Anglican church of Magill.

2. Mission and statement of the Nyamutetema parish The mission and statement of the Nyamutetema parish are the one of the UMCBurundi. The UMC-Burundi is dedicated to widespread evangelism in Burundi through :
- Education and Christian,

intellectual, vocational and socio-cultural training

- Harmonious and complete development of the society 3. The honey business project progress The business started on September 2011, with funds release of 1,223,093 BIF from Rev. Michael Russel of the Anglican church of Magill on August 11th, 2011. The same time, prayer points to the Nyamutetema parish were associated. At Nyamutetema parish, the funds were used as shown below: OUTPUT

Normally, the bee attics installation started at the end of November 2011 and at least 10 bee attics were established at Mutonga hill where the Nyamutetema parish has a missionary branch in the nearby. This period took at least 2 months from November to December 2011. From January to August 2012 is the period of bees occupation of the attics. The bees occupation goes with their work of honey production. In September 2012, it will be a harvesting and a sale period. This period, customers are many and we hope to get considerable outputs.

4. Obstacles and expected outputs. While managing the honey business project, some obstacles appear. Among these there is the lack of enough means to practice modern breeding which led us to a traditional one. The risk may be a not very considerable output from the project. Another problem that occurs is the frequency of fire burning in the area, especially during the dry season in July, which may bring out the risk to the attics. In the management of this project, it has been difficult to us to avoid the first obstacle as it is linked with financial means. But the second obstacle will be avoided by erasing all forests around the site project. This action will block all the fire to arrive into the site project. However, the output from the project is expected to be not very good but good with hope to increase for the second project. On September we expect to gain from the project at least 2,000,000 BIF;

6. Conclusion We expected to reach 2,000,000 BIF on September 2012, but instead we got to reach such sum on March 2013. This was due to some obstacles encountered as stated above. Another obstacle that was not though is a violent wind that shook our project site and 5 attics were destroyed. This brought the bees to consume the production and took flight away. As a request, we would like to make a step forward and leave this honey business to private pharmacy or private clinical health centre. These two proposed business would let us earn a considerable profit comparing to the honey business. In fact, in our area there is neither private pharmacy nor private health centre. People depend upon the only hospital set in Gisuru with no complete access to it all.
