Robin Pelton update Reminder -- PBS transplant video

April, 2013 email: transplant@neo.rr.com

First, we need to thank Robin for her efforts over the years sending cards celebrating donor and recipient transplant anniversaries. On October 20th, Robin went to Summa ER with a fever. The doctors could not figure what type of infection she had. A few day later, she fell and hit her head. An MRI showed abscesses in her brain. Immediate surgery followed and an egg sized abscess was removed. Pathology determined that she had a bacterial infection (nocardia its in dirt) and she was put on antibiotics (IV and oral), which continue today. Her anti rejection meds were stopped to allow her immune system to kick in. Robin has been on dialysis since November. Robin was in the hospital for 1 months, followed by 2 weeks in rehabilitation. Her mobility has greatly improved and she only uses a cane for steps and when she is out in public. She feels fine and has accepted dialysis as a necessary part of her life. Robin is extremely thankful for being alive and for her loving and concerned family (especially Randy!!) and friends in including her TRIO friends Love, Robin & Randy

There is an interesting PBS video Transplant a Gift for Life on liver transplants at Mayo Clinic, The prime focus is a daughter/father and a friend/friend living transplant where they transplant about half of a living donor's liver. There is also a traditional whole liver transplant with a teenage Florida donor and a Minnesota teenager and a lung transplant. The video is available on the PBS web site and you can view it on line at: http://www.pbs.org/programs/transplantgift-life/ TRIO National Presidents 3-11 call First, thank you to Mary Fread and Sylvia Leach for updating our 2013 IRS 501-c-3 non-profit certification. Second, congratulation to the new Maryland TRIO chapter and its president and founder Marty Maren. Finally, there was a lengthy discussion on the OPTN/UNOS proposal for a new kidney allocation policy. Details on the proposal can be found at: http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/kars.asp
