Synopsis:
Tom and Annie, a young couple, have just moved into their new flat. Living together for the first time they both worry about the seriousness of their relationship, and how it is maturing. One night, after Annie abandons her carefree attitude to prepare a traditional dinner, they realise and explore their insecurities and fears through a series of surreal dreams.

Genre:
Romantic/Surrealist Drama.

Underlying Theme:
What is expected of you isnt always what is for the best.

Treatment:
The main message of The Next Step is the fact that what is expected of you (by those around you, society, or expectations you have placed upon yourself,) is not always what is best. We want the film to say to audiences that even though your life may be going in a certain direction and even if youve reached a point or age where you feel like you should be acting in a certain way, it might do you good to break out of that and not conform to what you feel you should do. The main aim of the film is to successfully portray our given message to audiences. This will be done by exploring the characters of Tom and Annies situation and the fears and insecurities they have based on this, and display them through their actions, interactions and the characters dreams. An example of this is Annie, nervous at home preparing the meal; her actions (i.e. pushing down her dress and mixing up the cutlery,) showing she is uncomfortable doing what she feels she should do. Toms main expectation of himself (being the typical provider in the relationship,) leads to his fears of not being good enough to provide which manifests as the character of The Boss and The Stepford Wife in his dream sequence. Another aim of the film will be to show a clear divide between the real world, (the flat which the couple have just moved into,) and the dream world (in which they explore their fears). One way this will be done is through the use of the set (the flat in the real world will not be properly furnished, with unpacked boxes lying around, which the dream settings will be much more traditional). The divide will also be established through the different stylistic and camera techniques. Due to the films surrealist elements, we are able to use a much more experimental approach to the stylistic elements, namely the camerawork. We will use close up, handheld shots in the real world scenes, to emphasise how Tom and Annie feel entrapped in their roles (and to emphasise that it is the real world,) and then contrast this with a wider range of less tight shots in the dream scenes. An example of the type of shot we will use in the dream sequences is a cantered wide shot of Annie in the idealistic dream kitchen. Cantered to emphasise the surreal dream-like quality, a wide-shot to signify how lost Annie is in the traditional environment. The main audience of our film includes men and women in the age range of 18-35. While the romantic elements of the film, and the very human and relatable theme are accessible to a wide range of people, the surrealist elements and stylistics of the film appeal to an audience who are more experimentally inclined. While the more relatable aspects may attract a wide audience, more experimental films are not entirely accessible to all, so these aspects may make the film less appealing to some, while moreso to those who have a taste for experimental films. The film will be distributed through a wide range of places including online networking websites such as FaceBook, Vimeo, Tumblr (which will appeal to the more experimental side of the film,) and we also plan to look into and enter the film into festivals upon completion. Some of the online websites and especially the film festivals in particular would encompass some of the audience whove been mentioned who may be more inclined to watch less conventional, experimental films.
