Straight Talk is an audience-driven, culturally-appropriate newspaper produced monthly for Ugandan adolescents by Straight Talk Foundation, a leading Health & Development Communication NGO based in Kampala, Uganda.

Straight Talk appears in Uganda's lead national daily, _The New Vision_, and is posted to 25,000 schools, CBO/NGOs, health units, churches and mosques across Uganda, giving the paper an audience of nearly 1.5 million adolescents each month. Among other things, Straight Talk strives to help older adolescents manage sexual feelings, have healthy relationships, and make informed life decisions.

Cross generational sex is very common in Uganda, and one of the factors that expose teenagers to HIV. In this issue, we talk about sugar partners. We also feature a message from the Queen of Buganda, Lady Sylvia Nagginda, as she condemns these relationships.

and I become a widow. He may also demand a lot of respect, which I cannot afford to accord him. He mayalso undermine me because of my age. He cannot be asromantic and caring for me as one of my age.
It is normal for a woman to marry a somewhat olderman. But the question is,
“What is the quality of that relationship?”Could it be that this person has had other failed relationships? How many partners has he or shehad?
Remember, theolder the person, themore partners they are likely to havehad, and the morelikely they are to beinfected with HIV.
Winner 1Joseph Musabe, Mpanga SS, Fort Portalsays:
I would consider the issue of age seriously. It would be unwise to engage in a relationship just because someone is financially heavy. You never know, such a person may be having HIV and couldhave other marital vices. Ask yourself what hastaken him long to marry. I am 20 and would like tomarry when I am 32. It means I would be marrying awoman who is 47. I would not be different from someone who goes for a sugar mummy.
Winner 2Nankinga Barbara, 15, S3, Hilton HS,Mukono says:
A good marriage partner shouldbe single. I cannot marry someone who is 15 yearsolder than me because he can use everyopportunity to torture me. He may even die quickly

I give you whatever  you want, so you have to dowhatever I tell you.Oh my God! What did I let myself into! Will I manage with this relationship?

s you grow, there are thingsthat you want. A good marriagepartner will be one of them.
What kind of marriage do you want? Whatkind of partner would you wish to have? Are you looking for specific qualities?
Many girls andboys are taken advantage of because they do notstop to think about what they want in life. Accordingto the Uganda HIV/AIDS Behavioural and Sero-survey, 18 year old girls are 18 times more infectedthan 18 year old boys! Where do these girls get HIV  from? Often, they are having sex with older infectedmen. Many of these men lure the girls with gifts andmoney in exchange for sex. These are sugardaddies. In May we ran a quiz asking:
How can youfind the right partner to marry? How would you know that someone is the right partner for life for you? Would you marry someone 15 years older than you? Why or why not?
We received interesting replies from Straight Talkersall over the country. Two letter writers win school fees, while all writers of letters used in this issue winT-shirts. Congratulations to all winners and thanksto all who wrote in.

Dangers of sugar partners
T
he high number of young girls infected withHIV compared to boys could be because some young girls havesex with menmuch older thanthem. The Uganda National Survey of  Adolescents 2006found that 10% of girls aged 15 – 19 years, had sex withmen 10 or more years their senior in the past 12months.
After interacting withmany young people, Ihave found out thatphysical appearanceis their number one quality in apartner. Money, nice clothes, goodhair styles and other material thingsdo come up. The question is “Doeshaving money or good-looks mean you are the ideal marriage partner?”Many young people get sugardaddies or sugar mummies becauseof poverty, ignorance or peerpressure or because of wantingexpensive things. They are deceived with clothes, money and fancy phones but these material gifts arenever free. Theserelationships for themost part includeexchange of materialpossessions or cash forsex. This is cross-generational sex. Livesof young girls areruined. Many are leftpregnant, infected withHIV or both. Some boysalso get sugar mummies.Girls and boys, realize your worth and plan forlong-term goals. CrossGenerational Sex willcost you your futures, youmay get unplanned pregnancies, HIV,loss of dignity and respect. There areno short cuts in life and when youhave life, you will achieve yourdreams.
Cross Generational Sex stops with you!

You cannot trust a man who is 15 years older than you. If anything smallhappens, he can leave you.
Akwamo Nelly Suzan, 16, S3,Hilton HS, Mukono
I cannot marry someone 15 yearsolder than me because he can refuseme to interact with my agametes likemy OBs and OGs, thinking that theymay change my mind against him.
Adero Jackline Fortunate, 17,chair, Dokolo Tech School
I would not marry someone 15 yearsolder than me. We may not haveanything in common. She may not beinterested in going to interesting placeslike the beach.

dolescence is oneof the mostinteresting butchallenging times inour lives. It is full of funand excitement, butcan also be confusing. Many of you may notknow how to go aboutthe daily challenges.Friends do not make itany easier, as they may keep telling us to dothis and that whether itis right or wrong. Many  young people, especially girls, try to find alternative ways of solvingproblems. We think that once wehave money, everything is ok.However, this money insteadbrings more issues. You look for men old enough to be your fathers, to give you somemoney to buy nice clothes, eatsome chips and buy perfumes. Buthow do you pay these men back? Very few people will give youmoney without anything in return,so what many young girls aredoing is having sex with thesemen, so they can continueproviding for them. This exposes you to early pregnancy and STIs

or even the biggerone, HIV. Therefore itis good idea for us toalways find better waysof handling ourproblems.Talk to your parentsabout providing thethings you need. If they cannot afford todo this, try to acceptthe situation.Find alternative ways of getting money that will not expose you to infection or pregnancy. You could do some work andget paid for it. You can use yourtalent like art to make something you can sell.Headteachers, it is importantthat we talk to girls and together find a way of solving their financial problems.Remember, girls, having arelationship with a sugar daddy isnot cool. Your life is worth morethan a little money for chips, clothes, shoes and all those thingsthat have no value in your life.
