History of Plazaola
At the beginning of the last century the narrow track of the old steam train route was used to transport iron from the Plazaola mines to Andoain (Guipzcoa). In 1914 the Plazaola was converted into a passenger train which linked the neighbouring capitals of Pamplona and San Sebastin Over its 40 years of active service the route was the focal point of both commercial and cultural communication between Guipzcoa and Navarre. However, the floods of 1953 together with the tough competition of bus routes led to the closure of the Plazaola railway in 1958. The tracks were dismantled but their marks remained firmly imprinted on the landscape.

Recovering the route

The Plazaola Tourism Consortium is the driving force behind the reconstruction of the old Plazaola railway track. The project has been financed by the Ministry for the Environment with the further participation of local groups and the Government of Navarre. The Consortium belongs to the European Association of Greenways since 2000.

The Plazaola environment
Plazaola forms part of the mountainous region in the northwest of Navarre. The predominate rainfall in the area plays an important role in the vegetation and wildlife here.

The landscape is taken up by beech forests with an
