June 2013 Spec Market Scorecard

Well, we know now why Warner Bros. hasnt been buying much so far this year, but its still unclear whats going on at Sony and Paramount. As you can see from the grid on page 4, Sonys Columbia Pictures bought a total of 16 specs and pitches each of the last two years, but so far this year has bought one (a pitch). Similarly, Paramount bought 17 and 20 in 2011 and 2012, respectively, but just 2 in 2013 (one pitch, one spec). Since we love going the extra mile, we compared last Junes Scorecard to this one, line by line, and were glad we did: The slothful spec market this year is 100% attributable to the above three studios. Yes, 2013s total spec sales are down 18.5% from this point in 2012 (57 vs 70 as of June 18, 2012)...but if Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros. had bought the same number of scripts they did in the rst half of 2012 (18 total), the spec market would actually be slightly up for 2013 (to 72). We went ahead and did the spec market versions of the Buyers by Genre grids we introduced in last weeks Pitch Market Scorecard. The one for the Studios is on page 4, and the one for Non-Studio Buyers is on page 6. Enjoy.
