Special Project: Tessellations

(worth 200 points)

A tessellation is the result of covering a plane surface with a repeated pattern

of figures without any spaces between the figures. Tessellations can be formed
by transformations such as translations, reflections, and/or rotations.

Directions:
Draw a regular polygon. (5 points)

Create a complex figure (from the regular polygon) to tessellate by rotation,

translation, reflection or any combination of the two, to tessellate out of
cardboard. (15 points)

Design this complex figure. (25 points)

Take a sheet of paper and tessellation the design on the paper. (20 points)

Decorate the complex figure and repeat the design on the tessellation. (15 points)

Answer the following questions:

1) Will the complex figure tessellate the plane? (10 points)
2) What is the area of the regular figure? (10 points)

For extra credit, create a semi-regular tessellation using two regular polygons.
Follow the same directions and answer the questions. (50 extra points)
