Subject: U S S S T Program Issues

Date: Mon, May 28, 2012 12:43 pm Dear T o m Frank, [n accordance vvitti US Speedskating B y l a w s section 18.2 B . I w o u l d like to bring the t b l l o w i n g to y o u r attention: F o l l o w i n g the Men's 500m semi-final race on Sunday October 24, 2010 at W o r l d Cup 1 in Montreal, Canada, the W C coaching/support staff and athletes witnessed a situation i n the locker r o o m where I was humiliated, embarrassed, and degraded by Jae-Su Chun. After not advancing from the 500m semi-fmal, I was i n the locker r o o m w i t h my teammates and members o f the support staff when Jae-Su w a l k e d into the locker r o o m and threw his binder to the ground in m y direction. He then proceeded to open a f u l l bottle o f water, dump it over m y head, and y e l l at me, belittling me i n front o f the entire team. M a n y members o f the coaching/support staff witnessed this situation take place, however; the inappropriateness o f this situation was never addressed. Athlete Witnesses

Staff Witnesses: Jack M o r t e l l , J u n - H y u n g Y e o , Chris Weaver: I t is hard for me to come to terms w i t h the things I have been a part o f and witnessed, considering U S Speedskating's mission is " t o be one o f the premier speedskating organizations i n the w o r l d through excellence i n leadership, development and performance." D u e to the fact that this situation occurred during the last season 1 competed, J feel it is relevant to m y position and ability as a valuable athlete m o v i n g forward w i t h U S Speedskating. Up until this point 1 have been afraid to come forward and have chosen to stay silent on this topic due to my continued involvement w i t h the National Team. I feared for m y status and career as an elite athlete due to the staffs influence on flmding, team selection, training, and other opportunities available. After staying silent for far too long and since I am currently not involved training under US Speedskating's national program, I have decided to b r i n g m y issues forward i n accordance w i t h the US Speedskating B y l a w s . I w o u l d also like to mention that I have many other issues o f w h i c h I believe deserve your attention. I w o u l d be happy to discuss these w i t h y o u in n e r s o r ^ ^ v e ^ h e telephone M y father. ^^^Hf has also offered to do the sameimmmCollectively, these issues have been a p a t t e n ^ i m y s e l f and other athletes being exploited and taken advantage o f by US Speedskating Short Track Staff members, w h o are in a position o f authority over the athletes. The inappropriate abuse o f power, lacic o f respect for the athletes, and negligence o f the US Short Track Staff njembers to address these issues, has created a culture o f silence and intimidation surrounding the Short p c k Speedskating program. I sincerely hope that YOUR LEADERSHIP in the investigation of these issues w i l l have the ability to change the culture o f the US Short Track Speedskating program so that the athletes w i l l once again be proud to represent US Speedskating and ultimately bring home the gold in 2014. I have engaged in several discussions with Mark Greenwald, and based on the language used towards the athletes, I feel very uncomfortable in continuing to be an active member, who represents this governing body under the way it currently operates. Mark expressed to the athletes that Jack has shared ideas with him, concerning the Short Track Program; however, he was uncomfortable discussing these with the athletes. Mark was also very adamant that there are "individuals in this organization that have a lot of power and you don't want to piss them off because they are the ones making decisions on your (the athletes) behalf." When expressing our displeasure and discomfort in working with these individuals, Mark divulged to the athletes that we must keep them around because we don't want to be on their "bad side". Is this truly the proper approach for US Speedskating? Also, a couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to briefly discuss some issues with Bryce Holbech. I felt very comfortable discussing these issues with him, so I have copied him on this email as well. Thank you for your time.
