Well, we have hit another record here in North East Ohio; this June is the 5th wettest June on record. About 4.4 inches above normal, as you know it makes for trying times to maintain a golf course and for many of us tying to make revenue on top of everything else. It sounds like Mark Connors impromptu get together on June 21 at the Winking Lizard in Fairlawn went well with several Superintendents and industry representatives in attendance. This is a regional gathering that the NOGCSA Board has been trying to get members out and meet their peers and have some conversation along with a relaxing atmosphere. Stay tune for more of these gatherings, perhaps we will have one in your area. On June 25 the monthly meeting was held at the beautiful Mohican Hills Golf Club hosted by Kim Derr. A great day was had by everyone, thanks to Kim and the staff at Mohican Hills. Coming in July 27, 2013 Night at the Akron Aeros along with fireworks after the game, tickets are only $7.00 each, a good night to take the entire family out for some fun. Dont forget the family picnic on August 3 & 4, at Clays park. Come and spend the night camping or just come for the day, fun for all. Keep in touch for more exciting events from your NOGCSA. Enjoy your July 4th. See You Soon, Sean P. McHugh, CGCS NOGCSA President spm@clevelandmetroparks.com

DIALED IN
By Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North-Central Region June 24, 2013

I was in a rut. It seemed like every course I visited was having issues with excessive organic matter accumulation in the upper soil profile of 5- to 8year-old greens. Some were new, some were completely rebuilt, some were fumigated then regrassed, but all were seeded to an improved, ultra-dense cultivar of bentgrass. Spongy, pitted ball marks, black layer, moss, algaeyou name it, they had it. The problem was easy to diagnose and the cause was always some combination of too much water, too much nitrogen, not enough cultivation and not enough topdressing.

You begin to wonder if thatch problems on new greens are inevitable until you finally visit a course where the superintendent gets it. They have the topdressing, cultivation, fertility and irrigation practices dialed in from day one. The greens provide golfers a superior putting surface with a minimal
buildup of organic matter. In fact, you cant even find the grow-in layer that occurs during establishment. Those visits always energize me and I can make unpopular recommendations of aggressive cultivation and topdressing to other courses with more confidence. Need proof? Check out the soil profile of this over 5-year-old bentgrass greengreat surface and no thatch. With the office being located in Milwaukee, there was only one last statement to make at the conclusion of this enjoyable visit; Its Miller time, and Im buying! Ascochyta Leaf Blight

temperatures experienced in May. Much of the state experienced a 10 -14 day period of cool conditions in mid to late May followed by soaring hot temperatures on the Memorial weekend. Turfgrass that was under moisture stress, mowed, used for sports etc. was often damaged and quickly showed browning. Even though the turfgrass may look severely damaged the main injury is confined to the leaf blades. The crowns of the plant, the growth point for turfgrass, are usually intact and healthy. Check the affected areas by brushing the brown grass with your hand. This will break off the dead material. Then look at the base of the plants and often there will be new green shoots developing. Recovery should occur with milder weather conditions. It is recommended to follow proper mowing, irrigation and fertilization procedures to encourage new leaf growth. Fungicide applications are seldom needed. Growth of normal leaves to fill in damaged areas may take several weeks, depending on weather conditions. Remember that cool season grasses recover and grow best under cool, moist, sunny and moderate conditions.

Samples from blighted turf with large or irregular areas of brown grass have been arriving in the clinic. Many of these are the result of Ascochyta leaf blight caused by Ascochyta spp. The classic symptoms of this disorder are individual leaves dying back from the tip and entire leaves become bleached, a tan or brown color. At times there may be tan/brown bands on the leaves and the decline of the turfgrass may occur quickly. Small black flecks may be seen on the dead leaves with a hand lens, these are the fruiting bodies of the fungus. Secondary saprophytic fungus may develop on the dead tissue and be confused with the pathogen. This can occur on all grasses but Kentucky bluegrass seem to be especially prone. This disease was triggered by the extremes in

Effective immediately; it is no longer necessary for Class C members and Associate categories to be members of GCSAA in order to be a member or apply for membership to NOGCSA. This change to the bylaws was done to encourage membership of individuals in these categories in our local association. It was determined by the board, that for these Classes, the requirement of dual membership was too large a financial burden. It is the hope of the Board that this change will encourage individuals new to our profession to join our chapter, remaining active and involved members throughout their careers.

As July 1st approaches, please give a friendly reminder to all of your superintendents that per the new health care reform act, your facility will now start counting employees and part time hours that will count toward next years health care reform act. The new law states that the last 6 months of 2013 will be used to determine thresholds for 2014. These thresholds will determine whether your club is a large business or small business. There are many resources being made available to provide information about the new health care law, if your members have questions please have them contact myself or Chava McKeel at GCSAA Headquarters and we can point them in the right direction. Some of the Great Lakes region chapters such as Northern Ohio and Northwest Ohio have had educational sessions on health care reform for their members. There is a lot

going on right now in the world of government relations and GCSAA is here to help its members work through them. I hope everyone has a great summer and please let me know if I can help you with anything.
