Trading Card Comeback

When I was younger, every dollar that I earned could be spent two ways: I could buy Diet Coke or I could buy Magic: The Gathering cards. I maintained a balance between the two, but eventually purchasing collectable card games (CCG) were replaced with car payments and rent. I miss the glory days of tapping two islands and casting a counterspell, much to the chagrin of my opponent. But at $4 a pack, card games are just too expensive on a journalists salary. Enter the free-to-play market (F2P). New forms of digital distribution have given rise to the F2P market, which have birthed great MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online) and casual games that burn up time without destroying our wallets. Paying happens after the player gets into the game. Getting money requires entertaining games that motivate the player to pull out the credit card. And some of these F2P games allow players to earn cards while playing, requiring only time if one wants to get the best cards. Paying is an option but not required. As more F2P games crop up, developers are creating card-based games emulating some of the best CCGs, like Might and Magic: Duel of Champions and Blizzards upcoming Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. These games have resources, blocking and everything else you could want from a card game. Oh, and it doesnt cost anything to get in. Nor do you have to play to keep playing. Money is used as a convenience tool to buy more packs and enter tournaments. The F2P model of trading time for goods is perfect for online CCGs. Players still get all of the benefits of card games incredible strategies, unlimited customization and competitive gameplay without having to throw down up to $200 or $300 to get a good backlog of cards and build a decent deck. Of course, online lobbies are nothing like game shops, which are not only great places to buy cards but also to meet new people, develop relationships and enjoy fun, competitive games. Online CCGs cant recreate this experience. Card/game shops are hotbeds of activity where gamers let loose and enjoy their favorite hobbies. Ive made plenty of longterm friends in shops. While the lack of a card shop is a big loss, it doesnt disqualify online CCGs as legitimate sources of entertainment. Might and Magic: Duel of Champions is an incredibly solid game and it can be played on PC or on the iPad. Developers also are leveraging the power of electronic play to create new, unique CCG. Card Hunter is a mix of Dungeons and Dragons hexagonal combat, card-collecting and deckbuilding (more on this game in the sidebar). And a newly kickstarted CCG, HEX: Shards of Fate, is touted as the first MMO CCG. It will feature raids, dungeons and other MMO features built into a card game. Its being developed by the guys who created the World of Warcraft CCG, so the ambitious project is in good hands. The future is bright for CCGs as more developers offer cheaper alternatives and most of them leverage the F2P model to put the emphasis on playing, not paying.

Card Hunter is the best game you havent played

A new Collectable Card Game developed by veterans of Bioshock and System Shock 2 is my favorite new game. Card Hunter is a twist on the CCG. Players recruit three adventurers and play through scenarios akin to those found in tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons. Completing these missions gives the player loot, which is equipped to the heroes. This makes your heroes powerful by augmenting their deck. Each item equipped to a hero has cards attached to it that change the way your hero fights, moves, blocks and everything else. There are plenty of different items that make customizing your hero easy to do and challenging to master. Each adventure brings its own obstacles that require planning and a bit of luck. The game is in beta right now, but it is slated to release in summer 2013. It will be free to play and players can purchase pizza to get more gold, acquire items faster or buy special figurines and missions. The game is awesome enough to release now, so extra time to polish the game will only make it even more irresistible. Sign up for the beta at www.cardhunter.com.

Music Mel Guapo

Oklahoma: Behind the Music

Person of Interest: Chris Harris
Depth & Current is one of the hardest working and most active bands coming out of Norman and Oklahoma in general today. Brainchild of artist, dreamer and community stalwart Chris Harris, Depth & Current has played actively on the regional independent rock scene since 2008. The band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years and grown in both sound and artistry, but it is currently made up of Chris Harris (front man, guitar), Derek Lemke (guitar), and Tommy McKenzie (bass), occasionally joined by Matt Duckworth on the drums. In addition to Depth & Current, Harris also owns and operates a recording studio in Norman called Hook Echo Sound, which also produces the work of other original local bands. In addition to the band and studio, Harris maintains a pet project independent record label, Nice People Records, releasing vinyl records from local talent. For this issue I am interviewing Chris Harris himself. Why does music matter? While there are still raging debates about taste and the validity of one type of music or another, the simple fact is, most people enjoy music. Music and sex are both universally appealing both would rate above 99%. Even if Ive got no respect for a persons taste in music, I have to respect the idea that music has meaning to them. Music can be everything from soothing background noise to a catalyst for deep introspection. It can educate and elevate consciousness. Or, it can simply compel you to move your body. Music can be painfully serious. But, it can also be just plain fun. But, whatever it is to you, its a part of your life. It holds onto memories for you. And, it helps you put things into perspective. What is the philosophy behind Depth & Current? Depth & Currents overriding philosophy is and always has been sonic experimentation. The sounds are the result of fearless exploration. The sounds and noises are intended to be challenging and provocative. A long time ago, I was inspired by some comments from Trent Reznor, to try to appreciate the beauty in sounds that at first are frightening ... Im interested in making records that sound cool or different. Depth & Current is my primary vehicle for that. What experience and/or values--in general or specifically-do you bring to your music that make you important and/or legitimate as an artist? I think the one value I possess that makes me proud of the man that Ive become is my ability to put myself in the shoes of another person and to view different situations from a perspective other than my own. In that way, its being able to step outside of just my own experiences and values that makes my art have meaning to others. Would you rather be loud or understood? The truth is, if anyone is immediately put off by the noise or the volume, they probably werent going to understand where we were coming from anyway. Im getting more comfortable with pushing the vocals to the front of a mix. But, honestly, no matter where we put the vocals, its a decision that is made in service to the song and the music and has very little to do with any desire to be understood. I expect that people who really understand where were coming from are the kind of people who arent afraid to dive into the sea of noise to look for the beauty. Whats important in life? And how does your music reflect that? Integrity is important. Our music reflects that by trusting the audience to find the beauty in the chaos. Love is important. Our music reflects that by emphasizing the importance of sharing your heart with a kindred spirit. Confidence is important. Our music reflects that by not caring when people are turned off by the sound or the optimistic treatment of love. Where does a song begin for you? In the past, I always started songs with a chord progression. I thought that music was something that was right or wrong. I saw it as a challenge to figure out which chord SHOULD come next. Lately, Im more likely to start songs with a beat and a bass line. Either way, to me a song doesnt really start to become a song until I start kicking around vocal melodies. And I really never fall in love with a song until I start to get some lyrics that serve its sound and mean something to me.

Looking for a New Leader

It happened fast and shocked a lot of people in the Sooner baseball program and around the college baseball world. The Sooner head coach, Sunny Golloway, left the Sooners and took the head job in the SEC for the Auburn Tigers. The Sooners lost in the super regional round to the LSU Tigers out in Baton Rouge. Was it the lure of SEC competition? Was it the money? No one but Sunny will know the answer to that. Sunny won at OU and took the team back to the College World Series in 2010 and made deep tournament runs the last several years. The days after Golloway took the job at Auburn were very interesting in that we saw players like Dillon Overton and fans express how happy they were that Golloway was gone. Venom began to spew toward the former coach. This is not an article to show displeasure in Golloway, but a look ahead as to who will take over the head position for the Sooner baseball program. It is a program that may not be one of the blue bloods in college baseball like they are in the hierarchy of college football, but this is still a program that deserves to be led by one of the best in the game. My list of prospective coaches is below:

Chimys

Blue Bonnet Bar

Das Boot Camp

Dan Heefner, Head Coach Dallas Baptist: Heefner has made a program out of DBU that has owned the Sooners as of late, and he has a Super Regional appearance under his belt. At 35 his youth and recruitment in the fertile grounds of Texas could be a great tool to help the Sooner program continue its ascent to national power. Some may question his greatness due to the level of competition that the Patriots face during their season. David Pierce, Head Coach of Sam Houston State: The headman for the Bearkats saw his team lose to those same LSU Tigers in the regional round of the College World Series. A good young talent in the world of coaching, Pierce has no ties to the program or the state. Pierce has only been the coach for a year, so would he leave after one season at Sam Houston? Randy Mazey, Head Coach West Virginia: Mazey has a lot of coaching experience and is in the conference; that is a strong possibility in itself. Would Mazey leave a program that is building a new stadium for his team? They were a surprise on the Big 12 this year, with great pitching and scrappy players that like to put pressure on the opposing teams with running and good hitting. There are a lot of guys that are on the list of names to consider, like Mike Bell at Florida State, even though people feel he will stay at FSU for the foreseeable future. Then there are long shots like Denney Crabaugh from OCU and Ryan Minor. One last name I would like to see considered is the head coach of Florida softball yes, I said softball who is former Sooner baseball player Tim Walton. He has been the head coach for the Gator softball team and led his team to the College World Series five years in a row. With great ties to the state and program and his ability to recruit talent, plain and simple, I think Walton could be someone to at least talk to and gauge his interest. This hire is a big one for the staff in the athletic department at OU and the program is moving in the right direction. The hire needs to be someone that keeps the momentum going and doesnt let it stall out. Sooner baseball is looking for a leader, and it will be interesting to see who steps up and where the program heads.

Well call him Mr. Hipp. I hadnt seen Mr. Hipp for a few years, so we decided catch up in the Caribbean. The first day in that crystal blue water, I saw it. Mr. Hipp had a white scar on his back that oddly resembled a string of letters. Turns out they were a string of burnt letters spelling his ex-fiancs name. The key word in that last sentence is ex. Yuck never thought hed be one of them. Mr. Hipp fell victim to love ink that later became a meat canvas for laser tat removal when the relationship died. People of Norman, if you learn nothing else, learn this: You must never, ever, no matter what, for the love of everything right and avoidance of BIG TIME wrong, tattoo a lovers name/face on your body. I dont care if youre shwasted on Patrn, if your Grandma gave you the thumbs up or the love of your life brought you to the table, dont do it, man. Its a jinx at best and an expensive, massive regret at worst. Dont believe me? Heres just the tip of the iceberg:

The Weakest Ink

Chimys

1. Johnny Depp thought hed be with Wynona Ryder forever and ever. Wynona who? 2. Rapper Nas put his boo on his arm, bare milkshakes and all, but of course that soured. 3. Angelina not only wore a vial of Billy Bobs blood, but she also wore his name three layers deep in her arm skin. A few years later she dissed Billy for Brad. #swapninja 4. And, oh, theres Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards. He had her name on his wrist. She had his on her ankle. I dont know why that didnt work out. Charlie is a total rock star from Mars. He was bangin seven-gram rocks, cause thats how he rolled. Not bi-polar. Biwinning. The list goes on and on. Take the infamous ring tattoo. When things fall apart, how do you get rid of that bad boy? And a concealer doesnt change the fact you know you scored an F and scratched it into a more socially acceptable B. Theres something about that needle laying down permanent ink into your permanent body in the name of a possibly non-permanent relationship that will decide the fate of your relationship for you. The minute that gun buzzes, youve boarded the fail-boat.

If you must link through ink, choose something significant to only you two. For instance, B and Jay-Z reportedly share the tiny tattoo of the Roman numeral IV. Why? Allegedly they have a love affair with the number. Their birthdays are on the 4th just different months. They married on the 4th. Supposedly their daughter Blue Ivy has such a unique middle name because of the Roman numeral being squeezed into its spelling. If all this is true, then I think thats a much better way to go about a shared tat than the blatant naming of your significant other. If B and Jigga split, not only are those tattoos easily concealed, but their meaning is too. All I can say is just think before you ink. Its permanent. Its your body. People will see it. Make sure whatever you get, youre OK to have FOREVER in some shape or form. Easy as tat.
