Coworking spaces serve as business incubator

The term coworking was coined by Bernie DeKoven in 1999. Coworking as we know it today involving a physical space started in 2005 when Brad Neuberg used the term to describe a physical space where independent and mobile workers came together to work in a casual environment. It is based on the premise that people are stronger together; sharing knowledge and experience, sharing builds community that gets everyone further faster by leveraging collective genius. Deskmags 2nd annual Global CoWorking Survey shows the number of coworking spaces has nearly doubled each year since 2006. Coworking spaces are now widespread in the United States and Europe and still growing. Coworking space is more than just a sharing of common office and goes far beyond the Dilbert cubicles. Coworking space provides opportunities for individuals or companies that might not yet or ever find their way into a traditional incubator. Dennis E. Powell in his book titled Coworking Space: The Business of Serendipity, states, In an era of lives lived via social media, what could be more natural than social working, where people in unrelated businesses encounter others in the workplace, sometimes with serendipitous results? It used to be informal: People from different established or up-and-coming businesses would run into each other in the coffee room, the copy center or, apocryphally, at the water cooler. Ideas would be hatched, deals made, people in disparate lines of work would discover how they might aid each other in new projects. Then came the rise of the premium coffee shop. Writers and poets had always found restaurants and bistros hospitable to their muses much of the Harry Potter series of books were written in such places but the addition of Internet service made them friendly locales for professionals from other fields. Freelancers, entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs thinking of their next business, displaced executives, people in professional services, all of them found this need as creatures to work around other human beings, said Jeff Joerling, brand evangelist at NBIA partner Turnstone, the office design and furniture innovations company . The SEED Center Business Incubator opening in August houses more than 1,800 square feet of coworking space. This firmly places Southwest Louisiana on the cutting edge of innovation and entrepreneurship. For more information on the SEED Center Business Incubator, please contact Adrian L. Wallace, executive director Business Incubator, at 433-3632.

Continued from B1 I am a former McNeese football player and business graduate. After five years playing for the Cowboys and two conference championships, I pursued my life in business to take on the challenges I would soon come face to face with. With not knowing where to begin, there was one thing I knew I was good at, Martial Arts. With my faith in God and love for Martial Arts, I wanted to open a gym to cater to youth and adults. I wanted to bring families together. While the kids are getting their training, I wanted the parents to be able to get in shape, too. Our gym is now one of the fastest growing gyms in Lake Charles. Magnolia LNG receives widespread support for planned project

Special to the American Press Magnolia LNG recently got wide support for its planned Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project at a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) public scoping meeting recently held in Lake Charles. The facility will be located on Port of Lake Charles property along the Industrial Canal. In a letter filed with FERC, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, DLa., expressed her support for the project. This project is already strongly supported by the community and its leaders, Landrieu said in the letter. Magnolia LNG has and will continue to provide a net benefit to this community .I

Magnolia ... estimates that the project will generate approximately 1,000 construction jobs, 45 high-paying permanent jobs and 175 additional indirect jobs.

am proud to add my support to this project and stand ready to assist in seeing the project completed.

The public scoping meeting is in conjunction with the preparation of an environmental impact study (EIS) performed by FERC to determine whether the project is in the public convenience and necessity . The EIS will take into consideration the projects impacts as it relates to geology, wetlands, water resources, cultural resources, air quality, noise, endangered species and public safety . Weve been overwhelmed by the sincere support already received from the local community, its leadership, as well as state and federal legislators, said Ernie Megginson, vice president of project development for Magnolia LNG, said in a news release.

In reference to Louisianas existing pipeline infrastructure and economic development incentives, U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, said in a letter filed with FERC, These valuable and significant advantages should be capitalized on now, and I respectfully request every proper consideration be provided to Magnolia LNGs application. The project has received support from the entire Southwest Louisiana state legislative delegation including State Sens. Ronnie Johns and Dan Morrish, Speaker Chuck Kleckley and State Reps. Mike Danahay, A.B. Franklin, Brett Geymann and John E. Guinn. Other governmental and

business agencies are supporting the project. These include the Port of Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, City of Lake Charles, City of Sulphur, City of DeQuincy, Calcasieu Parish District Attorney, Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance and Lake Charles Pilots Association. Magnolia anticipates an initial $2.2 billion capital investment and estimates that the project will generate approximately 1,000 construction jobs, 45 high-paying permanent jobs and 175 additional indirect jobs, said Mayor Randy Roach of the City of Lake Charles in a letter filed with FERC. Based on these estimates it appears that this

project will provide significant short- and long-term economic benefits to Southwest Louisiana. Magnolia LNG is designed to be a mid-scale LNG project, with four gas liquefaction units, each producing 2 million tons per annum at maximum capacity . Company officials anticipate receiving final federal and state permitting in 2014, commencement of construction in 2015, and initial start-up of operations near the final quarter of 2017. Magnolia LNG has received approval from the U.S. Department of Energy to export product to Free-Trade Agreement countries.

HIGHEST PLACEMENT FOR STATE IN PAST DECADE

Louisiana ranked 14 in US in business climate study

Louisiana rose to its highest ranking ever in a national business climate study by Pollina Corporate Real Estate. The study analyzed the top pro-business states for 2013, and the state ranked No. 14 the highest placement for Louisiana in the last decade. When we took ofce, we made expanding and increasing career opportunities for the people of Louisiana our top priority, Gov. Bobby Jindal said in a news release. By eliminating burdensome businesses taxes, overhauling our governmental ethics laws, reining in government spending, streamlining our workforce development system and enacting landmark education reforms, we have established Louisiana as Americas new frontier for business opportunity . Every day, more and more companies are identifying Louisiana as the best place for business investment and job creation. Still, we will not rest until Louisiana is the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family . Pollina ranks the 50 states on 32 factors, which includes evaluation metrics such as business tax burdens, workforce training programs, workers compensation costs, economic development incentives, energy costs, marketing programs and state economic development efforts. The people of Louisiana should be very proud of Governor Jindal and his administrations phenomenal accomplishment, Dr. Ron Pollina, a geo-economist and the president of Pollina Corporate Real Estate Inc., said in a news release. In the 10 years that we have conducted our Pollina Corporate Top 10 Pro-Business States study, no other state leader has shown the consistent improvement that Governor Jindal has achieved in such a short time. Since taking ofce in 2008, he has moved Louisiana from a rank of 40th in the nation to No. 14 for 2013.

RadioShack has been facing slumping sales as more consumers buy electronics from online merchants like Amazon. New CEO Joe Magnacca, who took the post in February, has changed some merchandise offerings and revamped about 5 percent of the retailer's 4,400 stores to make them airier, less cluttered and more family-friendly. Will the electronics retailer's second-quarter results today show signs that Magnacca's strategy is paying off?

Keep your transmission cool

Danny and Judy Cormier opened Custom Built Transmissions in January 1998 with more than 30 years of automotive transmission diagnostic and repair experience. They are a family owned and operated business striving to offer personalized service to their customers treating them with honesty and fairness. Transmission repair and service includes free road tests and estimates. Ask about warranties for up to 3 years/100,000 miles. Summer is here and we are all looking forward to those summer vacations. Get your car ready for that vacation and have your transmission serviced. Heat can be a transmissions worst enemy. The transmission will last longer if you can reduce the heat that builds up during normal operation. Avoid hard accelerations, which can cause friction and heat. Starting off easy will not only save on gas, but add longevity to your transmission. Help your transmission shift. Friction and wear in the transmission primarily takes place during the shifts. Just before the shift, back off on the gas just a little, eliminating some of the friction. Maintain the cooling system. The radiator provides cooling for your transmission. Heat damage can occur long before the engine starts overheating. Regular maintenance on the cooling system will help your transmission run cooler and last longer. Add a transmission cooler. Excessive travel in high temps, pulling or carrying a load can put an extreme amount of wear on your transmission. Other valuable tips and information can be found at www.atra.com. U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany Jr.

By Lance Traweek
ltraweek@americanpress.com ix months have passed since Republican Rep. Charles Boustany Jr., R-Lafayette, was re-elected for a fifth term in a re-configured 3rd congressional district. Boustany talked to the American Press about what hes accomplished and what he hopes to achieve for the rest of the term.

Six months into his fifth term, this La. Republican representative has had tax reform, VA clinics, Obamacare and international trade on his plate

White House and Democrats in the Senate, but Ive been able to show a pathway of how to do it and Ive been successful with it. Now, well try to follow that same pathway with the employer mandate. If we cant repeal the whole thing than we have to go for chunks of it and this is the way to do it. Ive provided leadership on this health care effort to roll it back.

American Press: So far this term, what are some of the things that youve been focused on within the House Ways and Means Committee? Rep. Charles Boustany: I

new district. Whether it be flood insurance, or coastal restoration those types of issues.

chair the subcommittee on Oversight on the House Ways and Means Committee and there have been two major focal points for me. One has been working on our broad tax reform efforts to lower rates and simplify the tax code to make it much more simplified and fair to the taxpayer. Secondly, Ive been a leader on the IRS investigation. I started this investigation 2.5 years ago and it has led to some very disturbing revelations about serious mismanagement at the IRS, as well as intimidation practices and abuse of a number of groups seeking tax exemption status as well as abuse of taxpayers doing unwarranted audits. So, were continuing that investigation and thats going to take some time going forward. Those are the two areas that were really focused on. The third on the Ways and Means Committee is my work on the trade subcommittee. Were working on the TransPacific Partnership as well as this new agreement with the European countries. This will offer tremendous opportunity for Louisiana businesses to export to those countries. It means business for the Port of Lake Charles and for our energy sector as well.
l

Over the past several years, and more recently, there have been several bureaucratic setbacks with the VA clinics in South Louisiana. What has been your role in making permanent VA clinics a reality in Lafayette and Lake Charles?
Well, getting VA clinics in Lake Charles and Lafayette has been one of my top priorities since I got into Congress in 2005. And youre correct, weve had serious bureaucratic delays. One by the VA itself and the second one by the Congressional Budget Office. Last week, I testified in front of the House VA Committee to talk about these and propose some potential solutions going forward.

Have you been able to tout the economic benefits of LNG on Capitol Hill considering whats going on in your district?
Theres no question about it. In fact, I was invited to an international energy summit in Canada to participate on whats going on with energy policy in the United States. And my focus was promoting LNG exports and the benefits of that. Also, Ive given one speech that was hosted by a think tank on energy regarding LNG exports and next week I will be speaking again at a think tank in Washington as part of a panel discussion promoting LNG exports and the advantages. Probably, if you look at the House of Representatives Im one member that has the expertise on that issue. LNG exports are very beneficial for the U.S. in terms of its trade balance. It has positive geopolitical implications for our foreign policy . But also, its great economics for us in Southwest Louisiana.

Ive had a bill last Congress and this Congress that would kill the employer mandate in Obamacare. The Obama administration finally came to the recognition and realization (recently) that the employer mandate is killing jobs in this country. Its causing small business to lay off people and to not hire.
Rep. Charles Boustany Jr.
I recently sent a letter to House and Senate leadership both Republican and Democrat in the House and Senate. Weve had 66 other members of Congress both in House and Senate as part of my letter outlining a path forward, so that the leadership could actually move forward not only on the Lake Charles and Lafayette clinics but also the other clinics that have been delayed around the country . What the Congressional Budget Office has done is basically eliminated any possibility of moving forward on these clinics plus all future clinics unless we resolve this. So, the House and Senate leadership need to step up and move in a direction Ive outlined for them. We have to get this done. The other thing weve done is weve raised the level attention of this issue at the national level. I was able to get CBS News to begin an investigative report. They traveled to Lake Charles and interviewed veterans and those concerned with the delays. Ive also done interviews with CBS News. We expect that investigative report will be aired fairly soon. Im not going to stop until we get high-quality care for our veterans and we get these clinics completed.

the tax reform efforts, and Im in the process of writing a bill. That is apart of the committee work Im doing. I have a couple of bills that are really important to businesses around Louisiana and the country . Ive had a bill last Congress and this Congress that would kill the employer mandate in Obamacare. The Obama administration finally came to the recognition and realization (recently) that the employer mandate is killing jobs in this country . Its causing small business to lay off people and to not hire. They delayed the implementation for one year. The bottom line is that we need to repeal this provision at the very least if not repeal all of Obamacare, which has been my stance. So, this is a top legislative priority for me to get this provision repealed because its hurting jobs in this country . Weve got a 1.8 percent economic growth in the first quarter of the year. Unemployment remains high and a big part of that is Obamacare and the employer mandate the requirement to provide insurance otherwise paying a penalty is one of the main reasons were seeing this. The second one deals with Obamacare as well its the health insurance tax that is apart of Obamacare. This is a tax thats going to run up the cost of premiums for families and small businesses across this country . It is going to have a real, severe impact on Louisiana families. I offered a bill to repeal this health insurance tax. We have over 220 cosponsors of the bill in the House, and I think about one-third of the Senate is on the bill. So, we need to move forward on that as well. And those are two big legislative proposals that I have. The third one is as we embark in trade policy we need to make sure that our trade laws are enforced. We dont want to see foreign competitors coming in and breaking the law and bumping their goods in our marketplace. I have a key bill that basically improves our enforcement mechanisms in these trade agreements.

Within the past several months the DOW has been on the rise and jobs are being created within the nation what do you think thats a testament to?

U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany Jr.

Well, part of this is that the federal reserve by keeping interest rates low ... its fueled some of the stock market investments. But the basic underlying fact in the economy is that we still have problems. One of the truly bright spots in our economy has been oil and gas production through unconventional shale plays. Obama administration has not been too enthusiastic about this and has taken steps that will hurt it. Despite all that this has moved forward. Louisiana has been a leader and thats kept the stock market up and its kept our economic growth from falling back to the point where were in a recession. Energy policy and trade policy also ... and export have also helped fuel some of the growth and jobs that has kept us out of recession. But we still have far too many people who are unemployed. We have a lot of people who have quit looking for jobs. Its especially prevalent in our youth our recent college graduates and thats troublesome. We need good policies that will promote our economic growth, promote the creation of value in the private sector that will then create jobs that will create a good, healthy, vibrant American economy .

Youre pushing these repeals of these provisions within Obamacare but with a Democratic leadership in the Senate as well as Obama in the White House do you think its even possible to have enough bipartisan support to make that happen?

With this new term came a new district. Your territory has expanded and changed. How have you been able to adapt to the new district within this new term?
Constituent outreach is one of the most important things that we do in our office. I have done a total so far of seven town hall meetings. Three of those were in the new district in St. Martin parish, St. Mary parish and Iberia parish. Three were in Lake Charles, Iberville and Lafayette. We did one in Crowley as well. Were doing a very vigorous outreach into the new district to get to know not only elected officials but business owners and concerned citizens. I have done one telephone town hall per month many of these have been targeted into the new district. On average, we have 32,000 people on these calls. I have hosted events for hurricane preparation and talked about flood insurance problems in the new district, which is affected by this. Were doing a very vigorous outreach to address the issues concerning the new part as well as the old part of the district but also learn in great detail the problems facing the

Moving forward within this next year and a half is there any specific legislation that you would like to see on the forefront?
Yes, Ive been working on

Well, Ill tell you this. In the last Congress I started an effort to repeal the CLASS (Community Living Assistance Services and Supports) Act, which was a new long term care entitlement in Obamacare, and I built up a number of cosponsors in the House. A bill to repeal it passed in the House. Then, based on Oversight worked that took me nine or 10 months I was able to convince the Obama administration that the program was unworkable. They then put it on hold indefinitely . And subsequently, the Senate picked it up and got interested in it. We did, at the very beginning of the year repeal it completely . Thats the biggest defeat to Obamacare to date. It has been a major achievement. This is probably the first time an entitlement program has been repealed in our federal system. And I think its a model for how to get the rest of this done. Because of the work Ive been doing on the employer mandate is partly what forced the administration (recently) to put a one-year delay on the implementation of a piece of Obamacare. Conventional wisdom would let you think its going to be very difficult to get these things done with Obama in the
