The Townsend Centennial committee met on Wednesday July 10 to begin planning a celebration in honor of the township's 100th birthday which occurs in 2016. Chair Kathleen Marsh conducted the meeting which elicited many great ideas from steering committee members Pam Bursek, Sandy Bursek and Katie Essermann. Rick Opelia and Karla VanCamp were unable to attend but submitted their ideas and suggestions prior to the meeting. Marsh: "We had a very successful first meeting and established our main goal: make our Centennial truly memorable by attracting year-round and seasonal Townsend residents, visitors, neighbors, relatives and friends in all age groups. In that regard, we will offer a very ambitious schedule of events." "Of course we will need many more people to help us achieve our goal, and we encourage anyone interested to join us," says Pam Bursek. "We especially invite representatives from the business community, our active lake associations, and various community groups to join us." The next meeting of the Townsend Centennial Committee is Wednesday, September 4 at the Townsend Town Hall from 6:30-8:00 p.m. If you want to become part of this very special activity, please contact Kathleen Marsh at kathiemarsh@yahoo.com or Pam Bursek at 715-850-0832.

This free event includes a presentation at 1:00 p.m. with readings from Gerds historical novel, The Legend of Taylor Rapids, and a display of real-life items related to its story. The book, written in the form of a journal, features vivid, comical and touching characters who take readers to the era of logging, railroads and homesteading in Northern Wisconsin. The setting is real, but the characters are fictional as they depict life in the wild northwoods in 1914-1915. Gerds previous books are collections of biographical stories: Tales of a Newspaperman: Ice Bowl and Lombardi Through Time and My Father Lives in the Drawer. He recently released Real, Honest Sailing, a 339-page non-fiction book told through the experiences of a present -day a Great Lakes captain. Gerds writes a daily article for the WFRV website that may be found at www.wearegreenbay.com, (Click on Entertainment). He makes weekly live appearances on Green Bays WFRV, Channel 5, at 6:45 p.m. each Thursday and often creates a segment that is broadcast between 7 and 8 a.m. on Sundays. Gerds was born in West Allis, grew up in Milwaukee, and has lived in Green Bay since graduating from UWM with a degree in journalism. He wrote for the Green Bay Press-Gazette for 45 years and was critic at large for 35 years covering theater, the arts, media, architecture and creative people among other topics. He was voted Best of the Bay as best Press-Gazette reporter in both 2010 and 2012.

The weather was perfect for the two weeks of swim class at Wheeler Lake, July 8th thru the 19th. Over 30 children, eighteen newbies, learned to be safe and have fun in the water during the 30th year of the McCaslin Lioness Swim Program. Many of our minnows and sharks took over the dolphin group at the end of the sessions!! Thanks so much to Tami, Daniel and Katie Goetz for continuing to give such great training. We also couldnt do this without our helpersmany of them former students themselves. Have a great summer in the water!!

Come explore the significant special collections at the Wabeno Library this summer. Through September, the library is featuring bird life books, train books, and books related to the natural history of Wisconsin. For a small library, we have developed a impressive number of books with a focus on nature and history here, the director Carol Lee Hughes commented. We have a beautiful copy of Audobons work that is now non circulating but available for reading and research in the library. However, we also have many books that are available for checking out including several about our summer visitors the loons. A generous donor previously gifted the library with a set of Audobon prints as well that may be viewed by calling ahead to set up a time to view them with the supervision of the librarian.

start a model train club, that would be able to plan a larger display for the community in a public space over the holidays. Such displays welcome visitors and regulars alike, and encourage the public to explore these topics by reading more. In keeping with the local history of steam vehicles, the library also added an excellent work on the history of steam tractors, that has been borrowed by members of the Steam Tractor Association locally, and is available for the public.

The Pine Needle Quilters met on July 15 with 27 members present. A thank you note was read from a family in OK that received one of the quilts we sent to tornado residents. It was fun to hear that they are Packer fans, and were thrilled to know that people from WI cared. We had a chance to renew our Fons and Porter magazine. It is a mini fund raiser for our group. Members decided on which quilt they would like to sew for the VA Clinic which is being built in Green Bay. August 17th is the date to get together to make it. There will be a pot luck lunch. The top for our raffle quilt for our 2014 quilt show has been sewn. The Christmas challenge will be a Christmas stocking for a child that is in the hospital at that time. After show and tell, we had an excellent bed turning by Marge Kasten. We got to see the lovely quilts she has made through the years. We meet at the Breed Town Hall and Community Center the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. and the sewing session is the first Monday afternoon. Come and visit us at a meeting to see if you would like to become a member of this productive group.

How about model rockets? The library is seeking adults who would be interested in mentoring kids in the winter to build model rockets that we can be launched in the spring. An avid rocket enthusiast herself, the director points out: Rocketry is for everybody, young and old, girls and boys. We get the magazine of the If you enjoy hiking and walking, learn more about what you find National Association of Rocketry, and it is available for checking with books about rocks, fossils, and agates, especially books that out. "Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club, headquartered in Townsend, is in the process of writing its history," says newly-elected Red Arrow President Joseph Kamp. "In that regard, I have directed our Secretary Mary Stehula to assemble an ad hoc committee." Mary has recruited Rhonda Kroll, Kathleen Marsh, and Therese Erler. The group met June 27 to establish goals, procedures, and assign duties. "Red Arrow turns 45 this year," said Stehula. "So much has happened since the club was officially founded in 1968. Our committee's goal is to gather information to document our past 45 years and then update each year going forward. We would like to publish a detailed accounting of Red Arrow's first 50 years in 2018." Anyone having old club minutes, photos, pertinent documents, or personal recollections is asked to contact Mary Stehula at misteh@ezwebtech (715-276-7769) or Kathleen Marsh at kathiemarsh@yahoo.com (715-276-6515).

The Townsend Flowage Association held its annual boater safety training on June 14 and 15. Pictured are twelve students who successfully completed the course with their volunteer teachers. Wisconsin State Law says that if you were born after January 1, 1989, you are required to have a Safety Certificate to legally operate any motorized watercraft. The TFA provides the course each year as part of its mission to enable those who enjoy the lake via motorized watercraft to obtain the necessary training.

A Word or Two From Dr. Adam

Back Pain Prevention Back injuries are a part of everyday life. They can cause a sharp pain or a dull ache and can be accompanied by a tingling, numbness, or burning sensation. You may also feel weakness, pain, or tingling in your pelvis and upper lega condition known as sciatica. The spine is quite good at dealing with back injuries. Minor injuries usually heal within a day or two. Some pain, however, continues. What makes it last longer is not entirely understood, but researchers suspect that stress, mood changes, and the fear of further injury may prevent patients from being active and exacerbate the pain.

Tips for Back Pain Prevention: Maintain a healthy diet and weight. Remain active. Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest. Warm up or stretch before exercising or other Maintain proper posture. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes. physical activities, such as gardening.

Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine. Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting. Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues. Work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure that your workstation is ergonomically correct.
