There are 2 Main Themes in the Movie.

Theme of American Dream: U.S.A is always make the people imagine that America
is the land of opportunities and dreams as anyone come to it can own a land and start
from scratch and gain a lot of money in a very short period of time but this is
conditioned with working very hard. This is the American Dream but we see that the
protagonist Gatsby Violated the rules of the American Dream because he involved in
bootlegging of Alcoholic Drinks as in that period of time in U.S.A the Alcoholic
drinks was not legal to sell it so Gatsby Seized the opportunity and made his fortune
by illegal trading in alcoholic drinks and gained much money in short period of time
with out doing any effort and this is considered as a violation for American dream
rules.

Theme of Money & Class: we can understand The idea of this theme from the
fictional Setting which is East & West egg as the east represents ancient and west
represents new money and this is reflected in the story as we see that Gatsby worked,
gained a lot of money, have a great Mansion and he is making everyday parties and
he wants to be one of the Aristocrats of American society but when he try he couldn’t
because he classified as a new money and his Mansion was in west egg which is the
area of new money members and this is an emphasis that he is a new member in
American society as East egg represents the old aristocrats like Daisy and Time
etc.. .the final emphasis is the symbols of nature as there is a river that separates
between east and west egg and the significance of this river that new money people
couldn’t be from Aristocrats of American society.

Gatsby was looking everyday on a green light that comes from Daisy’s house as this
light represents for him hope and dream on the 2nd bank as the hope is to get his
lover back and dream is to be from the aristocrats of American society.
We can consider that Daisy is a great opportunity for Gatsby as if he gets back Daisy
he will get his lover back and he will also enters the Aristocrats society easily.

there’s another emphasis that new money people there chance to enter aristocrats
society is so hard as we see that rich people always attending the parties of newly
money like Gatsby but when they do any parties no one attend except rich and
Aristocrats only.
Daisy is love and class for Gatsby

The Great Gatsby for F. Scott Fitzgerald is a work that deals mainly with Time and
place because it have great impact on events and dialogues that happens.
There’s term called Chronotope and the meaning of this term is Time and Space and
this Term have a specific definition which is a Literary or Artistic depiction for
specific Time & Place, The Chronotpe allows the reader to use it to be able to put the
dialogues and events into appropriate context, we must know also that there’s no
Time without Space nor Time without Space because Time and Space are completing
each other and we can't separate them. The Person who developed this Term is
Bakhtin and he wants to show people that the Chronotope give each Genre it’s
Narrative Character for example the Chronotopic frame of the Epic differ from
Comedy.

The Setting in both Novel and Movie of Great Gatsby is fictional because in the
movie we see that all events and Most of the characters come from the Midwest to
the East Coast in U.S.A but we discovered that the movie filmed in Australia also in
the Novel we saw how the place is not real too, because West & East Egg is not
found in U.S.A but the writer used these places as a symbols to refer to something
that make the reader understands the meaning in more clear way as we saw Gatsby
involved himself in bootlegging and gained much money and when he tried to be one
of the aristocrats of American society we saw that he could not as he classified as a
new money member and his place of residence emphasis that as he lives in West Egg
as the west egg represents less fashionable and home to new money people. The East
Egg represents older and more established families live which is Aristocrats like
Tom, Daisy etc… also the nature plays an important role in the setting as there’s
natural obstacles that prevent new money people to get into East egg and the natural
obstacle is the river that separates between East and West egg. the idea of East and
West egg defines man made structures like high and low class.

When a movie is adapted on a novel like Great Gatsby maybe we find some changes
in events and characters and this is happened here as the Characters in movie
appeared with different qualities and behaviors but there also similarities like Nick
his similarities is he is meek and the differences that he didn’t fall in love with Jordan
Baker, Daisy appears in Novel and Movie as an innocent person but she is actually
selfish in her actions, Jay Gatsby the way that he acts in the book (facial expressions,
reactions) is portrayed extremely effectively in movie also Jordan Baker her loving
relationship with nick is not exist in the movie.

The Setting also have differences and similarities between the Novel and Movie as
the similarities is that Gatsby will never be able to fit in with people like Tom no
matter how much money he has and the differences is that East and West egg were
never defined as Old Money and New Money in the movie.

The Great Gatsby has a variety of different lighting techniques the high key lighting
for most of the film is used, High key lighting was chosen for most of the film to
clarify and emphasis the setting which is New York city and the time period, the
roaring 20’s that the characters and their stories are told in. for example the scene that
uses the high key lighting is in Gatsby’s mansion during the very first party that Nick
attends and The most famous scene in the movie to demonstrate the use of low key
lighting is in the final scene when Gatsby died and this is have indication that Gatsby
is dead, and the party is now over. the lights also used as a symbols in the film like
the green light which Gatsby looks at it every day that came from 2nd bank ( Daisy’s
house ) the green light has a significance as it represents hope and dream on the other
side, the hope is to get his lover back ( Daisy ) and the dream is to be one of the
aristocrats.

Method of Narration in Great Gatsby is that the author used the modified 1st point
of view and this means that the author use one of characters to help him in narration
(Nick ) and the story is narrated in present as he tell us what is happened from his
point of view and we must know that Nick started the Novel as in-between and ended
with same way , this is helps to show how the narrator seems to be at equal distances
from all characters.
