1. Why is Jay Gatsby called “The Great Gatsby”? Do you think the name fits him?

Jay Gatsby is called “The Great Gatsby” because of the people who admire him for his wealth
and looks. He is also known for hosting the best parties. I think the name fits him socially
because he screams wealth and power and is able to attain his dreams. But not in terms of love.

2. Who is Nick Carraway in the story? Daisy? What role does each one play in the life of
Gatsby?

Nick Carraway’s role in the story was telling and narrating the story in first-person perspective.
Daisy is Jay Gatsby’s greatest love, she is famous among people because of the admirable
qualities she possesses.

3. What are the conflicts in “The Great Gatsby”? What types of conflicts—physical, moral,
intellectual, or emotional—figure in this novel? Are they resolved?

All types of conflicts were present in this novel, it all arose from infidelity and affair. Gatsby was
trying to win Daisy, his greatest love, over again. Gatsby was killed by George Wilson for being
accused of killing his wife, Myrtle.

4. Why is Gatsby unable to put the past behind him? Why does he demand that Daisy
renounce her former love for her husband?

Gatsby is unable to put the past behind him because of his eagerness to relive the past and win
Daisy back. He wants to revert to his happy and memorable times with Daisy. However, Daisy
considers Gatsby as part of her past and nothing more.

5. Why does the author call our attention to the billboard advertising Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, an
optometrist? What is the meaning of the vacant eyes that watch the characters?

The author calls our attention to the billboard advertising Dr. T.J. Eckleburg because it shows
the society’s corruption and lack of values and empathy. The vacant eyes that watch the
characters are those that watch and judge them while they perform such immoral acts.

6. How does “The Great Gatsby” relate to our current society? How well did it represent the
Jazz Age (society and literature) at the time it was published? Is the novel still relevant?

The novel relates to our current society because it shows how the rich try and may successfully
succeed in controlling the people with their wealth. This shows how society revolves in the
power of money. The novel has great contribution and shows great critique to the Jazz Age at
the time it was published. The novel is still relevant because it tackles a broad range of
universal issues.

7. What is the theme of the story? What is the meaning of the “Great American Dream” as
mentioned in the story? Discuss.

The theme of the story is about the “Great American Dream”, this shows the materialism,
relationship, and dreams of the people. The Great American Dream means to be able to attain
success and wealth by one’s hard world and pursuit.

8. What are the social issues shown in the movie/story? Cite a scene in the story/movie to
explain such issue/s?

The social issues shown in the movie/story are about social discrimination, betrayal, greed, and
justice. Betrayal and greed were shown by Gatsby’s ways in getting Daisy back. Betrayal
because of the affairs that were present in the story which led to George’s incorrect way of
putting justice in his hands. He assumed that Gatsby killed his wife, Myrtle, by a hit-and-run.
